"Gasp!" Zariah actually said the word "gasp" as she dramatically put
ahand over her heart, "Is that D'erik, outside of the dreary confines
of the infirmary? Are you headed anywhere important?" As their paths
crossed in the hallway, she turned so she was headed the same
direction he was, "Because I'm bored. Lunch?"
She'd finished sweeps just a bit ago, and still had that slightly wind
tousled and windburned look.
D'erik rolled his eyes as the infirmary comment, mostly because there
was a lot of truth in it. He was married to his work and he wasn't
ashamed of it. "You? Bored? What happened to the latest stud you were
dating?" He extended his elbow to her as he changed their direction
towards the Dining Cavern.
"Oh, he's around, somewhere. Probably. I'm trying to avoid him until
he just wanders away naturally. You know, let him think it's his idea
to go our separate ways." It wasn't the first relationship she'd
grown... well, bored of. It probably wouldn't be the last. She took
the offered arm. "What about you? What's the newest distraction?"
"E'kavas," the bluerider-healer said with a grin. "He's in your wing.
Do you know him?"
"Oh, E'kavas is great," she said enthusiastically, "our kids are
friends, so I've gotten to know him some outside of the wing work. You
ever need a babysitter for a nice date, I'm there to help. When did
this start?"
"It's a pretty new thing," D'erik revealed. "Our dragons were chasing
the same green. Neither of us won so we ended up in a flightroom
together." It was a common enough story for a dragonrider, but it
wasn't often that D'erik ever wanted to pursue it any further than a
nice time in the furs. Accepting E'kavas' invitation to a date was a
rarity for D'erik. "We're supposed to meet up for klah soon."
"See, that's the perk of being a greenrider," Zariah teased, "we
always win the flights. That's exciting, though. You'll have to give
me all the details. And I'll bully the details out of him, too. Be
careful, though. I gather he's the type to take things seriously."
"Oh? And what type am I, then?" D'erik said, jabbing her in the ribs
with a finger.
"Serious, but about work, not nice men." She squirmed away from the
poke, "and I don't think there's anything wrong with that! E'kavas
just seems a little more romantic."
"How rude," D'erik sniffed. "Sometimes us serious-about-work men like
a little romance, too." He steered them into the Dining Cavern where
the delicious smell of fresh bread was wafting on the breeze.
"Well then, I look forward to tales of your mutual woooing. Any
interesting work stories lately? Any weyrlings crack a tooth and have
a complete meltdown?" She winked at him, sure he would remember a
particularly dramatic green pair who had had that particular 'trauma'
fifteen Turns ago. Relsath insisted she didn't remember, but Zariah
did.
"No cracked teeth, fortunately. I'm still traumatized from the last
green Weyrling I helped with a cracked tooth," he shot his eyes at her
and batted his eyelashes. "Now, I did encounter a broken toe
yesterday, and, as sad as it sounds, that was the highlight of my time
in the infirmary this sevenday."
"Boring is good though, right? In your line of work. I hate it, but I
never had a head for real work." She steered them towards the food,
grabbing a roll and taking a bite before even moving on to grab
anything else.
"Speaking of real work, how are your kids?" D'erik asked as he began
piling food onto his plate.
Zariah full-body sighed. "Zerias is having a rough time. I had to have
a talk with X'eri about it. Raleri has gone full dragon-crazy. She's
fantasizing about her dragon coming with the next hatching, but I hope
it waits some." She had nothing but faith in her daughter's ability to
Impress, but for her own sake, she hoped it took some time.
"Ah, X'eri," the bluerider's eyes lit. It really was a shame that
X'eri seemed only interested in women. He pouted a little. "Raleri on
a dragon, now there's a thought. That would certainly add some
premature grey hairs to your luscious mane." He eyed her hair as if
looking for a grey strand.
"I need to spend some more time with X'eri. I think he's having a
rough time," not that she blamed him. Catching his the direction of
his gaze, she fluffed her hair with her free hand, "No grey yet. She
hasn't impressed yet. That girl is reckless and cocky enough. She's
not ready."
D'erik's knowing look moved from Zariah's hair to her eyes. "Reckless
and cocky, is she? Hmmm, that certainly reminds me of this Candidate I
was partnered with for latrine duty after she let a tunnelsnake loose
in the Headwoman's office." Granted, he had been assigned latrine duty
himself for being out past curfew.
"And Relsath had the good sense to wait until I was older! And look
what I still got into!" She elbowed him, "We had good times, though.
We had it easier than the current batches of candidates and weyrlings
coming up."
"That's true," D'erik conceded. "Without thread, we had the time to be
silly and youthful. Do you think she'll listen to you or do you
imagine that your disapproval for Standing would push her toward it
even more?"
"She's a teenager. Of course she won't listen, but I have to try. And
hope. Mostly hope." Her smile faltered for just a moment before she
shook herself, joking, "No one warned me parenting got more stressful
after the baby stage."
"Well, _everyone's_ warned me, which is why I've never had children,
or well... never _claimed_ any anyway." D'erik's grin was unrepentant.
"Or no one _let_ you claim them," Zariah teased. "There could be a
half a dozen fatherless children with great hair out there."
"Ah yes, my greatest contribution to Dragonsfall - the great hair.
Hundreds of Turns from now others will look upon the inhabitants of
Dragonsfall and marvel at their lustrous locks." D'erik ran his
fingers through his own black tresses as he spoke. "Now, as fun as
this has been, duty calls in the infirmary," he said, leaning over and
popping a kiss to her cheek.
"I hope something exciting but non-fatal happens," Zariah said with a
cheerful wave goodbye.
