Description: Kamalia and E'kavas commiserate over theadscores
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 27 of Turn 11
Notes: Mentioned: Arrilon
It was a wet and dreary day at Dragonsfall. It had already been
drizzling when Kamalia had woken up and showed no signs of stopping.
She could have walked to the dining cavern to avoid getting wet, but
still found it exhilarating to be able to fly again after being
grounded for a sevenday, so had asked Alaudath for a lift. She had
mostly dried off during breakfast and, since they weren’t cleared to
/between/ yet, didn’t have anywhere pressing to go. However, she
remembered hearing about a wingmate getting Scored during Threadfall
two days prior.
Since getting Scored herself, she had realized just how nice it was
having visitors, and had committed to at least paying a quick visit to
any injured wingmates. As she finished her meal, she spoke to
Alaudath. **Can you see if Roquath’s rider is up for a visit? I can
bring up some food and a drink, if he’d like.**
}: Come on up, darling. :{ Roquath warmly answered. }: The kiddos just
left. We aren't doing anything. :{
**Who are you talking to?**
}: Alaudath. Kamalia is coming up. :{
Alaudath landed delicately next to the brown, greeting him. Kamalia
dismounted awkwardly, but successfully made it to the ground with
everything intact. She held a mug of klah with some milk and a plate
of assorted breakfast food. She had done her best to cover everything
with her jacket during the flight, which had resulted in a fairly dry
plate and a pretty wet greenrider. She didn’t mind though.
She gave a quick wave to Roquath and stepped into E'kavas’ weyr. “Hi!
I brought some things. I wasn’t sure if you wanted anything,”
"Come on in. I never turn away treats." E'kavas took the mug and plate
so she could deal with the wet gear. "It's really coming down out
there, huh?"
“Yeah, it’s been like this all morning.” The greenrider hung her
jacket to get it out of the way and threw her hair in a low bun to try
to keep her dripping to a minimum. “At least it’s not too cold though,
so it’s not bad. A good day to relax.” She looked at the brownrider
but didn’t see any obvious injuries. “It sounds like you and Roquath
are doing ok?”
"Yeah, we should be good to go by the next Threadfall." E'kavas said.
"Roquath got the brunt of it, and he's a trooper. Been milking it a
bit with the ladies, though, so my sincerest apologies to Alaudath.
How are you doing? You two are airborne again?"
Kamalia took a seat at a wooden chair, assuming the water wouldn’t
ruin anything. “Don’t worry. Alaudath is loving it.” The greenrider
rolled her eyes. “She keeps saying her scar will make her more
interesting to all the male dragons.”
Her tone became more serious. “I’m glad you’ll be back to normal soon.
We were only grounded for a sevenday, but it felt like a lot longer. I
think we’ll be cleared before the next Threadfall. To be honest, I’m
worried. We’ve never been ‘Scored before, so it’s strange to jump
right back into everything. I don’t feel ready.” E’kavas always seemed
so calm, she wasn’t sure if he could relate to her feelings at all.
"Hah! I used to tell Roquath that he'd look more dashing for the
ladies. That, he remembers." E'kavas rolled his eyes, mostly good
naturedly. The brown would probably have gotten there himself anyway,
with how much of a lady's man he already was.
"I was anxious getting back in the first time I got scored." E'kavas
said. "That was over a decade ago now. You just have to get back up on
the dragon and try it again. Any Threadfall you make it out alive is a
good Threadfall."
“That’s what everyone keeps saying.” Her tone was resigned. She
assumed it was good advice, but it wasn’t really helping. “Luckily,
Alaudath isn’t worried at all, which helps.”
Kamalia looked around the room, thinking. She liked E’kavas, but spent
most of her time with wingmates closer to her age. “You have some
kids, right? How old are they?”
"Some kids, yes." E'kavas said dryly. "Twelve, ten, seven. My eldest,
Jevikas, is mostly in the candidate barracks now. Peeve is enjoying
having the bed to himself." He gestured towards the blue firelizard,
who was watching them from a little firelizard-sized hammock. Despite
E'kavas' joking, Peeve was back to being annoyingly underfoot.
Kamalia smiled at the very relaxed-looking firelizard. She wondered if
Arrilon had something similar for his little green. Joy would probably
love it. “It must be interesting to be able to grow up in a Weyr. I
came here when I was 14, so I was a Candidate and now a dragonrider.”
She was a little jealous of all the young girls who were able to grow
up believing they could do anything. That had not been her experience
at Amber Hills Hold.
"I don't have a frame of reference; I was born and raised around River
Bluff Weyr." E'kavas said. "The kids seem to like it. It was hard for
them when we first moved here and they had to bounce between me and a
foster mother, but 'Nico's pretty self-sufficient now." More than he
would have been if his other parents were still around. E'kavas tried
not to think about that. "So you were Searched, huh? Where is your
family located?"
“They’re at Amber Hills Hold. My father is a guard and my mother,
well, had a lot of kids. I was the eighth child of thirteen. Now she
helps with the grandkids. I go visit every once in a while but,” she
shrugged, “it’s definitely not home anymore. And, they’re proud of me
but it’s not like I can really talk about my life here. It’s
uncomfortable enough for them knowing there are mating flights.” Over
the Turns, Kamalia and her family had learned to dance around any
potentially awkward topics, keeping their conversation to Amber Hills
gossip or other superficial subjects.
"That's rough." E'kavas said. "I've got a large family myself. Not
that large, by any means, but enough. Our family were fishers before
the Pass." He didn't really understand the discomfort around mating
flights though; it'd been a part of his life and his family's life for
as long as he could remember.
“It’s not bad. I have my own life here that I love, and I can always
go visit to be reminded of how wonderful it is to not have to pop out
a bunch of kids.” She liked kids but had no desire to have any of her
own. Then, she remembered who she was talking to. “Not that it’s bad
to have kids, of course. Actually, if they could start at the age your
kids are now, I don’t think I’d mind it.” Well, maybe she still would,
but at least they wouldn’t be so needy.
“Have anything special planned for Turn's End?” She was glad both she
and Alaudath were feeling well enough to be able to truly celebrate.
"I had kids the easy way." E'kavas said with a laugh. "It's not for
everyone, and that's okay."
He did pause a moment at the reminder of turn's end. "No plans. I
think it'll be a quiet evening in for me." The anniversary of River
Bluff's destruction was too close to turn's end for him to really
enjoy the holiday anymore, but Kamalia didn't need to know that. "What
about you? Any big plans now that Alaudath is feeling better?"
“I’m just excited I can celebrate. I’ll probably go to one of our
wingmate’s parties,” she said, sure he knew what she was talking
about. She didn’t like throwing big parties but very much enjoyed
attending them. Something interesting always happened, and she hated
missing a party and then hearing the gossip afterwards.
Not sure what else to talk about, and not wanting to overstay her
welcome, Kamalia stood. “I should be heading out. I’m glad you’re
doing well, and that we’ll both be back in the air for the next
‘Fall.”
E'kavas stood as she did. "Thank you for the visit, and the treats.
We'll be happy to have you back in the Wings in a few days."
“Yes, see you soon.” With a final smile and a wave, she headed back to
her green. It would be nice to get back to normal.
