E'kavas didn't trust Roquath to be particularly careful with the short jaunt to Relsath's weyr; it was a level above and a weyr to the left. And within shouting distance, as Kevia confirmed when she checked to see if both dragon and rider were still home. And then she and E'kavas packed up the okayishly-made cupcakes and made the trek upstairs themselves.
E'kavas took the box from her so she could knock on the door, wait exactly 15 seconds, and swing open the door. "Zariah!" She called. "I brought you cupcakes!"
The fifteen seconds gave Zariah enough time to set her book aside and rush over and pull out a couple of mugs that she’d stashed in her own cupboard. “Cupcakes? No one’s ever brought me cupcakes before. And E’kavas!” as if it were a surprise that he were with Kevia, “I was just about to return your mugs to you,” she lied.
"Yeah, sure you were." E'kavas said. "Since you've got them out, I've brought klah for us adults too." He handed her the jug of klah.
"I made them myself." Kevia beamed and gave none of the credit to the adult supervision. "Blue icing is your favorite, right?"
“It is. Blue is the best color and these are so…” Zariah paused, stared at the cupcakes. “E’kavas that’s inappropriate for children.” Nevertheless, she poured some klah into one of his own mugs and offered it to him. “Besides, how do you know it wasn’t condolences?”
"It's no less inappropriate than old Roquath making me drop everything because he's feeling affectionate." E'kavas protested as he took the mug.
"Uncle T'gyrlan said he had fun." Kevia said happily. "He liked the cupcakes too."
“Roquath should be resting,” Zariah scolded. “Don’t let him chase greens. Your uncle ate my- are you giving me leftover cupcakes? I don’t know if I should be offended, because it’s still cupcakes but…”
"Roquath is resting, thank you. Don't let his tragic-looking face fool you. He's acting like he's never allowed to chase greens." It came out as a joke, but E'kavas looked long suffering. " And they're not leftovers, we made extras."
“Well, I appreciate him refraining. No offense, but I’d rather have the cupcakes. So, uncle T’gyrlan said he had fun?” She shamelessly fished for information.
"Wow." E'kavas deadpanned.
“You’re dating my friend,” she reminded him.
"I'd rather have the cupcakes, too. But some acknowledgement once in a while would be nice."
“I am acknowledging that these are very good cupcakes, thank you. I came out the winner here.”
Kevia ate her cupcake, eyes darting between her Dad and Zariah, grinning widely. She filed this conversation away for later. "Uncle T'gyrlan was really happy." She announced between bites. "Hanassath only just started flying again." Kevia said proudly on the bronze's behalf. "He wasn't going to fly again, you know. He said he's going to take me for a ride soon."
"He asked what you like, so expect a thank you pie or something in the future." E'kavas added. "Probably charmed out of the Lower Caverns. Don't eat it if he suggests that he baked it himself."
“And Hanassath flew very well. I’m sure you’ll get a ride soon,” Zariah said, smiling at Kevia.
“Typical man. I told him I liked flowers, but he had to ask a man about it,” she didn’t seem actually bothered, busy licking frosting off her fingertips.
"He didn't know we knew each other until he saw the cupcakes. He's been focused on Hanassath since the accident." E'kavas said.
“Well, now I'm offended. You never once mentioned me to your handsome brother in law?”
"We suggested flowers too." Kevia added quickly, even though she didn't make any suggestions. "He's very thoughtful. And lots of fun."
“Is he now? Anything else I should know about him?” Zariah asked the girl. “I’ll split a second cupcake with you if you give me all the gossip.”
Kevia reached for the second cupcake immediately. "Hanassath and Roquath are brothers. Uncle Tig is my mom's foster brother. He likes going to the beach and reads a lot. He's really strong. Sometimes he picks me up under one arm and 'Nico in the other and spins us around."
She looked slyly at Zariah. "He's _single_."
“The beach? And reading? He sounds like quite a catch. You should set him up with someone.” Zariah took her half of the cupcake.
She did spare a glance towards E’kavas to see if he looked annoyed by the conversation.
E'kavas was pretending to closely investigate the half-eaten cupcake he was holding. "You should, beanie."
Kevia put her elbows on the table and rested her chin in her hands, looking very much like she was trying to set someone up. "You two should go to the beach." She said, "A good one, like back home, and bring enough snacks for a picnic. When's your next restday?"
Zariah said. “I'm very flattered, and I did think he was very nice, but it's up to him if he wants to spend any more time with me. So maybe ask your uncle his opinion before you start making plans, alright? Dragons don't make the best matchmakers.”
"It wasn't the dragons! Though that would make it even more perfect." Kevia said with a dreamy sigh. "It'd be hard to share a weyr if they didn't like each other. So when is your next restday? I'll ask him for you."
“E’kavas, your daughter is persistent.” Nevertheless, Zariah told her when her next rest day is. “But don't make me sound pathetic when you go scrounging for dates for me.”
"She's like her mother." E'kavas said mildly, as if the two of them hadn't been practicing this conversation on the walk up to Zariah's weyr.
"I would never!" Kevia said with a dramatically offended gasp. "I set up Farien and Celiana, too, and all I needed to do was write 'do you like Celiana' on a piece of paper. It was so easy."
"Those are her friends in the creche." E'kavas supplied. "As you can see, we know all about romance."
“She has a promising future as that busy body aunt who always tries to set people up,” maybe just Zariah had had that. “E’kavas, you’re awfully on board with this for someone who never mentioned me once before now.”
"He wasn't asking me about anyone before." E'kavas said. "Not after the earthquake, and then with Hanassath's injuries. I've mentioned him to you before."
Zariah seemed pacified by that, “Well, I hope things are improving for him. He seems nice."
"He _is_ nice." Kevia confirmed.
"I think it's about time to go, miss." E'kavas said. "Before all that sugar hits."
Kevia took another cupcake for the road. "Think about it, Zariah. I think you'd be really cute."
“Kevia, my dear, I'm cute with anyone.” She ruffled the girl’s hair. “Go enjoy your sweets, kiddo.”
