T'gyrlan

T'gyrlan

The bubbly pie was a work of art. Fresh from the kitchens, its crust was golden and crisp -- and intricately carved with a floral pattern. Perfect. T’gyrlan thanked and tipped the baker before hurrying up the stairs to the rider weyrs before the pie cooled. Zariah said she liked flowers, E’kavas said she liked pies. Hopefully this would be a good middle ground. He wanted to thank Zariah for not making things weird, without making things… weird.

He found the right weyr quick enough, and knocked. “Zariah,” he knew her name now! “Are you in?”

The voice wasn’t totally unfamiliar, but Zariah had a vaguely confused look on her face when she went to open the door, unable to place the name until, “Oh! It’s you. I was just sitting around reading.” She eyed the pie in his hands, hopeful, but not wanting to assume. After all, she’d heard he ate her cupcakes, “Did you want to come in? Pardon the mess.”

It wasn’t bad, she just had to quickly pluck a jacket off the back of one of the chairs and stack a couple of mugs and put them aside.

“Yes, it’s for you,” T’gyrlan laughed at the hopeful look she gave the pie as he followed her into the weyr. “I wanted to thank you for inducting me back into the wings-- and so quietly. I had them do flowers on it, special. …It’s still hot from the oven, if you want a slice.” Now it was his turn to look hopeful.

“Oh, I don’t know that it was _quiet_,” Zariah teased, though she knew what he meant. She headed for her cupboards and pulled out two plates and some silverware. “You didn’t need to do that, but since you did, do you want a piece? It’s almost too pretty to eat.” She didn’t wait for an answer, nor was she actually dissuaded from cutting it, quickly dishing out two generous pieces. “Although I heard you ate my cupcakes,” she made a motion like she was taking the plate back before setting it down and offering him a fork.

“Well, that E’kavas is _not_ quiet. Did he mention I helped make you new ones? You actually got more that way. I spaced out the S-E-X.” He took the fork. “He had it mashed together before. I think you came out ahead.”

She laughed, “No, he didn’t mention that. Good thing, then. I had to share mine with G’zan. So, do you bring all the greenriders bubbly pie? Or _just_ the ones you cry when you see them naked? Because really, it was alright.”

“You’ll be the first and last, skies willing. I’d rather not have a repeat of the circumstances that made that flight so… moving.” It was nice of her to say it was alright, he still felt awkward about it. “I look forward to taking my dragon’s health for granted in the future--” He paused. That sounded wrong. He’d _never_ take it for granted again. “I mean. You know what I mean.”

“Oh, good. I like being in an exclusive club,” she teased. “So. What's your favorite part of being back in the air? Had a nice beach day yet?” The smile on her face had become a playful smirk.

His response was polite confusion. “Uh, not yet?” It felt like he was missing part of the joke. “My niece and nephew love to go though. So there’ll probably be one soon now that we’re flying again. Mostly I’m glad to be back in the wings. Drilling, fighting. I missed it.”

The smirk turned into a chuckle, “Well, that makes sense-- it was Kevia who was telling me how much you loved beaches. She tried talking you up.”

“Ha! That little scamp. Don’t tell her, but I mostly go for them. It’s always rough on Hanassath’s hide and means a bath and oil when we get back. Plus, I burn.” He paused a moment before giving into curiosity and asking, “What else did she say?”

“Oh, let’s see… you are strong enough to pick up her and her brother… you read a lot.

“Not much to do when you're grounded.”

“And she made sure to mention you were single.” Zariah took another bite of the pie before adding, “So, you should watch out. She’s trying to set you up.”

“Huh…” T’gyrlan had been careful. He hadn’t brought actual flowers, because he didn’t want to set any expectations. But it seemed his little niece was stirring the pot anyway. Looking at Zariah though, he found he didn’t entirely mind. “Do you think it’ll work?”

“Hmmm,” she took another long moment to appreciate the pie, then set her fork down. She leaned back, as if to get a better look and gave him another obviously appraising look over. Then she sighed, “I’m afraid you're going to have to talk to your niece. I'd hate to ruin her plan.”

“Oh? How mysterious,” laughed T’gyrlan. “I guess I’ll have to take her to the beach sooner than I thought.”
