Kapera

Aydhan appeared in the Weyrwoman's office the afternoon of moving day, looking put-together enough considering that the majority of her things were still haphazardly tucked away in crates and boxes. Springtime at Barrier Lake was only a fraction warmer than High Reaches, at least, so she didn't need to worry about scrambling for fewer layers the moment Tymborikath came out of /between/.

"Tym is still entranced by the boats." She said cheerily as a greeting, as if they were old friends and not new coworkers. "I hope the sailors are used to dragons staring at them."

"Take a seat. I have klah and juice - I remember how obnoxious moving is," Kapera said sympathetically, gesturing at the table. "I think if it bothered them, they'd have left by now. Can't exactly ask our dragons to move. Can ask them to behave better, though, there was one green that liked to swim up too close to smaller boats and make them wobble."

"Oh no." Aydhan laughed. "So the bay is that deep? Or was she out paddling in the bigger lake?" She mentally waved off Tymborikath's sudden interest in the conversation with a fond, **That's undignified, darling.** as she poured herself a mug of klah.

"The bay is deep enough for small boats, so Jalyth would go flat and lie on the bottom, then slowly creep along it and then pop up by a boat. Riyanth put a stop to it after the third complaint."

"Oh _no_. That's hilarious." Aydhan said. "Thankfully Tym seems _mostly_ content to watch from above. So far. So! Tell me more about Barrier Lake. What can I help with?"

"Well, with my former Second off to the North, it means I'm riding the only breeding gold. You see, we have a retired goldrider here - Rasme is a dragonhealer, so I've been delegating anything related to dragonhealing and healing to her until now. Given your skillset, I see the healing coordination all going to you," she explained.

"I like to speak to people, so I plan to retain many of those duties. Relations with the Holds and Halls especially. Candidate and Weyrling interviews and training oversight, and dispute mediation. Right now I'm splitting the work with the Headwoman and stores with Rasme, and with the Weyrharper for the archive work of records updating. D'hol is handling rider transfers, but crafter and caverns are still on me."

Her overview presented, she took a sip of her klah and waited to see what Aydhan would want to take on.

"I'll check in with Rasme about the Infirmary Duties. I do enjoy doing that, but I don't want to step on her toes if that's work she wants to continue. I can definitely take the stores portion off her plate though, so she can focus more on her craft." That part wasn't particularly exciting, though she expected it to be staggeringly different than trying to search and keep inventory of the ancient and half-forgotten storage areas at older Weyrs. "I can take on the Crafter and Lower Caverns oversight, if that works. I'm pretty social myself, so I'd rather not be entirely confined to hidework."

"I would appreciate that very much," Kapera said. "Anything else you are really good at and want to take on?"

"How is D'hol managing? I can take on rider transfers too, if I'm already approving support staff transfers. And the records upkeep- I know I waxed poetically about how much I love good records."

"He hasn't complained to me yet. Why don't we ask him at the next leadership meeting, tomorrow? I'm looking forward to introducing you to the other leadership staff here, it's a very good team. Feel free to ask me in advance about anyone."

"Sounds good. How _do_ you find your leadership team here? Are there any issues? Anything I should be aware of before I get started?"

"There aren't any issues, surprisingly. I can tell you a little about the ones you'll be working with most. Most of us knew each other before arriving at Barrier Lake, and I hope it won't seem too much like a clique. I met D'hol at Dolphin Cove when he was a Wingleader, and Yumath had flown Riyanth once there. He's a good partner to have, no complaints about his performance. His Weyrsecond is K'ran, River Bluff's last Weyrleader and the Lord Weyrholder of this project. I met Skybroom Wingleader J'nus at Dragonsfall, and then at Dolphin Cove. Then there's K'lvin who leads the Weyrlingmasters. Our Wingsecond is D'kere. And Jayzine is our fantastic Headwoman."

"You've got a lot of big names in your senior leadership." Aydhan said. "That's a lot of people with Wing- and Weyr- leading experience. I'm sure I'll fit right in soon enough." She did make a mental note to make sure that N'kevyn made the rounds. "How have the Wings been doing in Threadfall? There's always growing pains when there's movement, and I can't imagine how everyone managed coming from so many different Weyrs and still being cohesive."

"The first Turn was rough," Kapera admitted. "There were transfers from all Weyrs, but so many former River Bluff riders returned to a familiar territory, their patterns dominated at first. We've basically settled in, but if you have ideas for improving the Queen's Wing, I'm all ears. I find it's challenging since we have so many injured or pregnant riders moving in and out, and I very much want to steal a few more hale and hearty from the other wings to form a more solid backbone."

"Such is the dilemma with the Queen's Wing. It's hard to find healthy fighting dragons that want to be in the same way as the pregnant and injured." Aydhan said with a shake of her head. "Some Northern Weyrs put their young riders in the Queen's Wing instead of keeping them with the Weyrlingmaster. It gives a little more stability, but doesn't really strengthen the Wing."

"My immediate concern is, do they get injured more readily if they enter the Queen's Wing, versus running firestone in Fall but being with the Weyrlingmaster at the rest of the time?" She was willing to let Aydhan argue for trialing it here, if the other rider believed in it.

Aydhan shrugged. "Nah, the injuries end up about the same. Fewer threadscores, but kids are going to be inexperienced wherever they are. Injuries from improper /betweening/ or poor weather conditions don't go down, but they do end up injured doing risky maneuvers. I'm not keen on it myself, but it's an option if the fighting wings have no one to spare." She shook her head and made to stand. "That's not a problem we can fix today, though. How do you feel about a walk? I'd love a chance to get my bearings, and you can introduce me to any of your clique as we see them."

"I'm looking forward to it. Now that you've gotten the _official_ overview, we can also talk about some _less_ official things." Kapera winked as she moved aside her paperwork and drinks so they could do just that.
