Description: Corofel and Reven meet the Hold's new Headwoman.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 10, day 18 of Turn 11
Jylanya still couldn't make herself enjoy a ride on a dragon but she
couldn't refuse the transportation courtesy without offending either
the Weyr or the new Lord Holder. So, she clutched at the young
brownrider they'd sent to fetch her and her things.
"Momma you're squishing me," Tonja complained and she loosened her
grip slightly and closed her eyes.
"Sorry sweetheart," she said as they spiraled in. She didn't dare to
look down until she felt the dragon touch down.
"We're here," L'far said and unbuckled himself and the child. Phorth
crouched down as far as he could for he felt their passenger's unease
with flying.
Jylanya held onto Tonja until the young rider reached up to take her.
Then she too slid down and though she'd hated every moment of the ride
she still thanked the rider and then his dragon.
}:She is very sad:{ Phorth said.
**Yes, she recently lost her mate.** L'far's eyes followed the lady
into the Hold. After all the recent happenings he only hoped she would
be safe and happy here.
"Well, let's get back and see what else Z'ku has for us to do today."
Jylanya didn't watch them leave. She held her daughter's hand and
mounted the steps of the Hold. She was met by a guard with a very
serious expression. "I'm the new Headwoman, here to see the Lord
Holder and the Warder," she said.
A drudge stepped out from the shadows of the door with a smile.
"Welcome ma'am," he said. "This way if you'll follow me."
They went down the long entrance hall to the wide stairs and then back
down the hall along the balcony to a largish meeting room.
"My Lord, sir," the drudge announced. "Your visitor is here."
Reven stood behind Corofel's shoulder, giving deference to the Acting
Lord, as the new Headwoman of Emerald Falls entered the room. They had
received several applications and many glowing resumes, but Jylanya's
had stood out the most. She came highly recommended from the Dolphin
Hallmaster.
"Thank you, Berrelle." He nodded to the drudge. "Welcome home,
Jylanya." Corofel offered his hand to the new Headwoman. "Won't you
have a seat?"
"Thank you sir," she took his hand and nodded with a bit of smile.
"This is my daughter Tonja," she added while the little girl leaned
against her legs not looking at the strange men. "It is a pleasure to
be here." She took the offered seat and spoke quietly to her daughter
who slid into the neighboring chair.
The holder from Green Valley's eyes lit a bit as he saw Tonja.
Crossing the room, he knelt by her chair. "It's so nice to meet you
Lady Tonja. I have a daughter who looks to be just your age. She's in
the next room playing. If it's okay with your mother, you could go
meet her and play?" He looked up at Jylanya for permission.
Jylanya raised her brows and looked at Tonja encouragingly. Then
nodded at the Warder.
Tonja slid off her chair already anticipating play and willingly took
the man's hand. "Yes please," she piped.
Jylanya smiled her thanks.
"Is there anything you need to get settled in?" asked Corofel, once
the little one was happily engaged.
Reven returned from the room next door. "I've asked my wife to join us
as well," he said to Jylanya and Corofel. "Since the hold is without a
Lady currently, I'm sure Arippa would be glad to help out."
"Your help is always welcome, Arippa, thank you." Corofel smiled.
"Thank you," she acknowledged with a dip of her knees to the young
Lord Holder. Then she smiled at the Headwoman. "Welcome to Emerald
Falls."
Jylanya smiled back. She was very pleased by the warm welcome she'd
received both from the Lord Holder and Warder and now by the young
Lady Arippa. "Thank you," she also said. "I'm actually coming home in
a sense. I was born in one of the smaller Holds beholden to Emerald
Falls."
"Emerald Falls is certainly fortunate to have a Headwoman of your
caliber," Reven said, not wanting to overstep his bounds and get in
Corofel's way, but it was the truth. With the way things were
currently at the Hold, they couldn't afford an inexperienced
Headwoman.
"And I am very pleased to make more direct connections to the holds
that look to me," said Corofel. "I regret that circumstances have
required me to step up before I've had the opportunity to build those
relationships, and I want to remedy that as soon as possible."
She nodded again. "My brother is Jyltor of River Wood. I'd be happy to
lend whatever influence I can to the relationship." She didn't want to
see Jyltor ever again and yet now, she was no longer under his thumb.
She'd even found a way on her own to be helpful to him without him
being able to dictate her life or that of her daughter. She found no
little triumph in those facts.
Reven had only dealt with the people of Red Rush and Field Meadows,
since their territories directly touched Green Valley, but he made a
mental note to add a trip to River Wood on his and Corofel's
itinerary.
"Thank you, Headwoman." Corofel smiled. "Can I interest you in a tour
of the Hold? Or is there anything else you'd like to discuss here?"
"I'd very much like that," she smiled. She could meet the steward and
her direct reports once she was settled in.
"Perfect. We can all chat while we walk," said Corofel. "Is that
agreeable to everyone?" There it was again. Did he sound ridiculous?
Maybe. But he had a feeling until he earned his people's respect, he
was going to keep looking and sounding like a child at play. And the
only way to earn their respect was to show them that he could handle
the job.
Reven placed Arippa's hand on his arm, covering it with his other hand
lightly. "A walk would be perfect." He leaned in to whisper into
Arippa's ear. "But if you get tired, we can take a break," he said to
his pregnant wife.
She smiled up at him. "I'll be fine."
Jylanya stood and waited for the Lord Holder to lead the way. She
found she rather liked the young man and looked forward to the work
here. It would help take her mind off... everything.
