M'thos

M'thos

All that angst. Ekirim, deep in thought, for _months_, agonizing over this decision about whether or not he should present himself as a candidate to the Headwoman. Weighing all the pros and cons of it, bothering his friends and family, the Weyrlingmaster himself showing up at his doorstep. Being 'deep in thought' was unfamiliar territory to him, and he didn't much like it. He liked it when things were simple, he liked it when things made sense.

All of that angst and all of that uncertainty would not have happened if they had sent M'thos to talk to him. Or, if M'thos had been the dragonrider on Search when his stupid brother and sister were whisked off to the Weyr the first time. One look from that man and Ekirim would have done _anything_ he'd asked.

He had expected the Weyrlingstaff to be old and crotchety. Or grizzled from a life of Threadfighting (despite Thread only returning in the last decade). Sure, he had heard from J'ler that the Weyrlingstaff was entirely new, something about whatever happened with that girl bluerider (he paid attention when J'ler spoke, but he didn't have the context nor the memory to completely understand his weyrlinghood woes, except that he did consider them _woes_ at the time) but he didn't know the names of anyone like J'ler did, or their reputations around the Weyr. This man looked like he stepped straight out of a ballad that the harpers played at Turn's End. Sometimes he swore that a harp _did_ play when the man talked.

"Dragon wings are shaped like a human hand and arm." M'thos was telling them. "So really, dragons have four arms and two legs. So do firelizards and tunnelsnakes. Get that image out of your head." His green, Fianwyth, held out a wing as instructed, wiggling a little as her rider pointed out all the important parts. Most of the words Ekirim didn't understand nor had the faintest clue to try and spell, but he could easily (and badly) sketch and substitute what words made sense to him. Shoulder, elbow, fingers. Those made sense. The rest was just going to have to be 'wing parts' and 'more wing parts'. It was equally bad to hurt any bit of it and he wasn't sure why he needed all the details when he could just say 'no damage' at the bottom of the page. No one would ever mistake him for a dragonhealer, that's for sure.

"Fractures are easiest here. Bad storms can wrench the wings out of socket, or put pressure in ways they shouldn't be. Added onto a bad Threadfall…a gust of wind can plow you right into another dragon. Ekirim, what should you do first if that happens?"

Oh, shards. He must know that Ekirim had been staring dreamily at him instead of taking notes. Uh. He glanced down at the page that only had 'no' written on it next to a bad drawing of a wing. Well. "Um…stay calm?" Ekirim meant it as a joke, but M'thos nodded and smiled a very encouraging and swoon-worthy smile.

"That definitely helps. Easier said than done, though, when your dragon is terrified and fighting to get away from another. Zaphare, any other tips?"

He didn't hear Zaphare's answer, but it must have been right enough because M'thos gave her that same smile.

Ekirim sighed. Shells, he was handsome. Maybe candidacy wouldn't be all that bad after all.
