Rainy days were boring. Lemhask sighed and watched the drizzle come down outside as the thunder rolled. Now that classes and chores were over for the day, he had little else to look forward to. He had been paired with Tannock that day, and when they were finally finished... well, Lemhask wished he could have thought of any excuse to stay with him longer.
It was strange. Why should he care so much about being around Tannock? He was nowhere near the same rough and tumble type as Merhaskel, so it was not as though he could expect him to want to roughhouse-- even if they would not get in trouble for doing so inside while the rain spoiled their outdoor fun. But nevertheless, there was just _something_ about him.
He could hardly say the older boy was "cooler" in any conventional sense. Hardly any bravado. But that did not mean he lacked confidence. He was just... fun to be around. Lemhask could just sit and listen to him talk for hours and not tire of his voice. He smiled and sighed.
Now that both of their fathers were on the weyrlingstaff, Lhemask supposed that should give them ample opportunity to... what, hang out? Would Tannock even want to hang out with a kid two Turns his junior when he could be hanging out with someone significantly cooler, like, say, Merhaskel? Oh, Lemhask would never admit it out loud, but Merhaskel was _so_ much cooler than he was. Taller. More handsome. Not stronger, though. Lemhask could give him a run for his money in an arm wrestling contest, as long as he did not use his height to cheat with the extra leverage.
Maybe he could get Rhas to agree to arm wrestle him where Tannock could see. And then if he beat him, he would be impressed! And then he would come up and say something like, 'Wow, Lem, you're so strong!' And then maybe he would even want to touch his muscles. Right?
But what if he lost? He did not beat Rhas every time. Or even most of the time. Could he risk a 50/50 shot of making a fool of himself in front of Tannock? No. Best to avoid that.
He sighed again. There had to be an easier way to do this. Tannock had already seen him lifting heavy things during chores. If he were going to be impressed by his muscles, he already would have been. Lemhask had to figure out how to be cool in a way that Tannock liked.
He could always ask his fathers for advice. They knew how to get people to like them. And M'thos _was_ now a colleague of T'lonas's, so he could _ask_ him what Tannock liked...
But then what if T'lonas told Tannock he had asked!? That would be the least cool thing ever. He did not want to look like a creepy stalker. Maybe he could invite him to play cards? Bah. But then he would have to invite other Candidates to play, too, and then he ran the risk once again of looking like an idiot in front of Tannock if he got trounced.
Maybe he liked books? Lemhask could always save up to buy him one. But how would he know what kind to buy? He would have to talk to him about it, and then it would not be a surprise. Or worse, he would find out that Lemhask was not at all very well read. And then he would never think he was cool!
Shell shards and ashes, this was hard. At the end of the day, he never did do much more than stare out at the rain, wishing he knew what to do.
