N'kevyn

N'kevyn

It didn't take N’kevyn as long as he'd feared to catch a certain greenrider in the Dining Hall. Taking the time to get two mugs of beer, he headed over to join the younger man, plopping one of the mugs in front of him before sitting across from him.

“I owe you an apology for my behavior the other day. If I’d known Aydhan was in a meeting I’d have never burst in like that. So, sorry. G'wen, yes?”

The person in question jumped out of his skin when the mug of beer the size of his head landed in front of his dinner. His bronze flit Dusk squawked and took to the air. He turned his dark eyes up to the person who had spoken. “Ugh…hiya…” Ah no, he was hoping what had happened the other day would just be forgotten about. Looking from the man to the beer, he said, “there no need to apologise, we live in a Weyr after all.” He smiled hesitantly.

"Weyr or not, it was rude and I apologize. Didn't mean to startle you, or your little friend there." N'kevyn did not take the hesitant smile as a reason to flee, instead leaning back in his chair and saying cheerily, "I've been taking my children- well mostly my daughter- out firelizard egg hunting, but it seems the rumors of them being everywhere down here are slightly exaggerated."

Just to rub it in, G’wen thought privately, Dusk settled down, and had Marli with him. He moved his new beer out of their way. “You might want to watch it, these two are devious together, particularly the blue, he’s not really Impressed to me.” Marli squawked his opinion of that. “They might put your kids off wanting one, I can always send them your way.” He laughed and glanced over at the man. “Thank you for the apology, J’nus seems to run a good wing, Neath and I have never been in the upper wings before.” They would soon be joining the wing for a ‘Fall, which both excited and terrified G’wen. But after over a month since fighting thread, it was time to get back to work.

"Oh, no," N'kevyn said, waiving a hand, "I don't want to discourage them. I want at least one myself, and the egg hunting is the most fun I've had in a while. Not really a thing at High Reaches. J'nus seems good," he agreed. "it took us a bit to get a handle on the formations and the weather down here, but he's been fine to work with. Were you Queen's wing before, then? Never had the pleasure, myself. Avi's big, not quick, so we've been better suited for the general wings."

“Yeah, we were there ever since graduating. They needed some big dragons in the wing at the time, and well, my Neath is a big girl, for a green. She’s been good at catching some of the smaller injured dragons from the wing just above us. She’s not as quick as most other greens, but she’s still faster than the boys, while being sturdier than a green.” He was quite proud of his crazy girl and it showed. Though he told himself, he might want to rein it in. This guy rode bronze, after all, and of all of Neath’’s size, she was still on the small side compared to a typical bronze.

"Well, I hope you enjoy the higher wings, You'll find the air a little clearer, I suppose. Ash falls down and all that. I wouldn't have minded some nice big greens down in the queen's wing keeping an eye on Aydhan and Tym, though," he winked. Changing the subject back, he focused in on the firelizards, "So is there a story there? If the blue," he noted to Marli, "isn't actually yours."

“Ah that…” G’wen blinked a bit. He’d never get over Paetri's death, he’d just learned to live with a friend-sized hole in his heart. “It’s a bit of an odd story. He had Impressed to a close friend of mine and fell madly in love with Neath. When she…” He took a deep breath. “When we lost her…Marli here had been in the middle of putting some gifts in Neath’s wallow. We came back from the ‘Fall and found him still there, all but gone. My weyrmate at the time was a dragonhealer, and he worked on Marli. I suppose his love for Neath was stronger than any bonds he had and so he hung on and then got better. He’s her flit now.” But just to prove his words wrong, Marli chirruped at G’wen and rubbed his blue cheek against the young man’s hand and wrapped his tail around G’wen’s wrist. G’wen looked at N’kavyn and lifted an eyebrow. “Maybe he’s gotten used to me after these turns.”

"I'm sorry about your loss," N'kevyn said solemnly, taking a moment to sip his beer, pretending not to notice the blinking. "But I'm sure your friend would be glad you were able to keeps something precious to them safe. And he certainly seems happy enough." He gave a little smile at the little blue. "And I'd say he likes you. What about your little bronze there? What's his story?"

“Oh, he was from an egg from my ex-weyrmate’s gold.” He sighed a bit, thinking about E’naer. It was time to change the subject. “So what about you? All I know is you ride a bronze that keeps losing Flights!” G’wen’s tone was teasing, and he grinned to let the man know he was joking. “Tell me about him, and your children.”

“Oh, I'm sure your Neath will have some opinions on Avicath eventually. He is, of course, the best bronze at the Weyr, despite any evidence to the contrary, because being best is a state of being, not anything he has to do or accomplish… or win,” N'kevyn was grinning, this was one of his favorite subjects. Lowering his voice, as if to keep from being overheard by a certain bronze, he said, “Avi is a little overconfident. He’ll mellow out again once all the greens aren’t new.” Moving on to his other favorite subjects, he said, “Nikhayden is 19 and Aydhara is 17. Both Candidates, of course. Aydhan and I were lucky enough that the children agreed to come along for the transfer, although I think Aydhara was swayed by hearing blues in the south like girls.”

“They do indeed.” G’wen had been at the Impression at Dragonsfall when that happened. “That was odd when Ishath went for Kadira, but why not? So do you think Aydhara might be the type a blue would be more interested in than a green?” He hoped he wasn’t being too nosy, but he was curious and it showed in his expression.

N'kevyn shrugged, "I think any dragon would be lucky to have her, but she would love 'a very good boy like Avicath'," he smiled fondly. "I can just see her now, though, with a little blue as stubborn as she is."

G’wen grinned at the fond expression on N’kevyn’s face. It was an infectious look, after all. “Well, with as good a dad as her I’m sure she’ll do well.” Suddenly he was glad he had changed Weyrs. Change was good, and so was meeting new friends.
