It was an accident.
It was a fluke.
It wasn’t her _fault_.
No one had told her that the compulsions of dragonflight were as strong as they were. No one had told her that it was more than just wanton whore to succumb to the desires summoned by wings on the horizon. Or… perhaps they had, but why should she have believed them? Who in their right mind _would_ believe them? So many of the foolish souls who ran away to the Weyr were morally corrupt sluts looking for an excuse to indulge in their hedonism freely, it only made sense that they would come up with dragonflight as an excuse to spread their legs for whoever they wanted. But Kaede didn’t"
She wasn’t"
She’d just wanted a little time away from Silver Peak and the expectations that had been laid upon her. All that she had been searching for were a few days where she didn’t need to think about that wretched _Xelasrin_. That wasn’t the same thing as what those vile women did. It didn’t make her"
“It doesn’t matter,” Kaede murmured into the mirror, fingers clenched around the vanity. “I’m not like them.”
The girls who slept around at the Weyr had no excuses. Kaede did. She had been caught off guard by a rising dragon. She hadn’t known what to expect should such a thing occur. She was tied to a pathetic man from an utterly despicable family, expected to wed him and bear his children. _Anyone_ in her position would have done the same, she hadn’t…
No, she had. Kaede had committed infidelity. The fact that she loathed her fiance with all her being did nothing to change that fact. No matter how much she may despise their engagement, the fact remained that she was expected to be loyal, yet had strayed in the most egregious manner.
It wasn’t her fault.
Kaede drew in an uneasy breath as she rose her fingers to graze against one of the bruises scattered across her neck. She wished that she could say that she hadn’t enjoyed it, but… She had. She could still remember the delight of fingers exploring her body and the fire it set within her core. If she closed her eyes, she could remember the thudding of her heart and ecstasy of the moment. A dragon may have been rising, but it had still been she who had consented through that haze of excitement, she who had enjoyed every second of it.
It didn’t matter. It still wasn’t her fault. In the grand scheme of things, it was a small, forgivable error that could easily be forgotten.
It _would_ be forgotten. None would ever know of what happened on Kaede’s three day trip to Barrier Lake Weyrhold, not even the brother who had escorted her. Not her fiance, not her father, not that attention-seeking idiot Islyn _no one_. And someday, Kaede herself would forget that it had ever happened.
Kaede wrapped a scarf around her neck to hide the bruises, smiled weakly, and prepared to get on with her life.
