Jaylene slapped her gloves against the palm of her hand as she walked over to where the queen’s wing had settled. The ‘Fall hadn’t gone as well as she would have liked, and she wanted to confer with someone on their wing. As she looked around for someone who wasn’t busy, her eyes settled on K’far. Ah yes, he was a good one to talk to, being the wingsecond. Coughing a bit of ash out of her mouth, she took off her helmet and tugged at her braid as she walked up to him and his brown.
“Hey there Torth, can I speak with your rider?” She gave K’far a bright smile.
K'far was equally displeased with the way fall had gone, and he blamed himself. There must have been something that he was or had been doing wrong, but until he had a minute in quiet and calm to reflect on it, he was not going to figure it out.
When Jaylene approached, K'far could only assume that she was about to tell him. He steeled himself against being an arsehole about it. She did not deserve his frustration.
Torth bowed his head to her to assent.
"Jaylene," he greeted her. "How can I help you?"
She smiled at him before her expression changed to a perplexing one. “That last hour of the ‘Fall, our wing felt like we were blowing to the east, then the wind caught us and moved us away to the south west..how much thread got through to you guys?” She felt her body go taught, waiting for him to tell her what a disaster it had caused.
"More than I would have liked," said K'far. He was not a bit surprised to hear that something had happened higher up that was beyond their control, but it was up to him to be ready for these things. "But I should have been ready for it."
“No, it was our fault.” Jaylene pursed her lips, annoyed with herself. “Did any get through your wings? Any injuries?” That would make her feel even worse, knowing their mistakes had caused someone to get hurt. There hadn’t been any keenings, plus Reanth hadn’t said anything, so at least she knew there had been no deaths because of it. But even so. She made a note to talk to D’ale about it later. Maybe they could do some tighter formations and wind training with the younger ones that had caused the weaving to happen.
"More than zero," said K'far. He had already checked with the ground crews below where it had happened, and there had not been any irreparable damage, but that was down to luck. "Nothing worse than some patches of scorched grass and some wing strain, but more than zero. I'll have to figure out a better way to train for it."
“Same for us as well, with the retraining.” Already she was making mental notes to bring back to L’val and D’ale. “We can’t afford mistakes like that. We need to train up some of those young greens and blues so they’re stronger in such winds so next time they won’t get buffered about.” UThat and maybe add some more to where she knew the wing was a little weak. “I am sorry that this has caused any stress.”
"Not your fault. It's good for us to work out how to fix it," said K'far. If it happened again, it could be worse. Much worse. "Maybe I can get a few more able-ridered dragons for the Queen's Wing so we'll be in a better position to mop up more than a falling dragon, too."
“Yeah that, and I think I’m going to put some of those younger greens and blues onto sweeprides over the Western Barrier Range. That always puts muscle into the smaller dragons.” Jaylene pulled out a piece of paper and a pencil to mark some notes down. Later, after she had washed Renath and had dinner, she’d write them up and make sure they were on L’val and D’ale’s desk for the morning. “I’ll write all this up for my wing leader. Is there anything else you feel I should add?”
"I think you're showing great initiative," said K'far. "And putting me to shame, besides." He smiled just a bit.
She affectionately tapped him on the shoulder with her pencil. “Nah, I’m not putting anyone to shame, trust me. If you could see the state of my office desk.” She mocked shuttered. “I’d better get a shifty on, then. Thank the Weyrwoman for me.”
"Well, if nothing else, my desk is immaculate." K'far laughed. "I'll give her your best regards."
