K'mai

As soon as he spotted the bluerider entering the dining cavern, L'keri
hurried over to meet him, practically bouncing on his toes in excitement.

"K'mai! Come and look!" He gestured towards the notice board where the
menus for the sevenday were usually pinned up. On a table underneath it,
someone had placed a box with a slot in the top. A few riders were
gathered around it, and as they watched, one chuckled and wandered off
to join the rest of his wing.

"Name a _sausage_?" K'mai laughed as he read the note.

"There's a prize!" The brownrider sounded as thrilled as a little boy on
his birthingday. "I'll bet it's food. Imagine, extra helpings of dessert
for a month. Or a giant bubbly pie made with your choice of filling." He
licked his lips.

"Or more of this new sausage," K'mai said. "I suppose we should try it
before we come up with names."

"Well..." L'keri looked a shade guilty. "I might have tried one already.
Maybe more than one." He brightened. "But I can always have another, to
keep you company! They're really good."

"Well, either you join me or you sit there and watch me eat sausage."
K'mai stepped over to the large serving platter. "Sometimes I like when
people watch."

"I'll join in. I can always find room for a sausage." L'keri winked and
picked up a plate. However, no sooner had he stepped up to help himself
than one of the kitchen staff fixed him with a glare.

"Hey, you! Put that down. You've already had at least six."

"Me?" L'keri froze with the meat half way to his plate, and assumed his
best injured-innocent expression. "Not me. You must be mistaking me for
my twin brother, K'leri. That man loves sausages. Can't get enough of
them." He nudged K'mai. "Can he?"

K'mai plucked the tube of smooth meat from L'keri's hands and put it on
his own plate. "Greedy, greedy."

"Aww," L'keri protested. "Poor K'mai will have to sample the sausage all
on his own. Good thing he's had plenty of practice."

His mournful expression and empty plate failed to move the cook, who
continued to give him a hard stare until he backed away from the food
and followed K'mai over to one of the dining tables. By the time they
got there, though, his mood had recovered.

"Go on, try it," he encouraged the bluerider. "Then we can start
thinking up names! Between your natural eloquence and my appreciation of
the culinary arts, we can't fail to win the prize."

K'mai snorted. Appreciation of the culinary arts indeed. He took a bite
and frowned thoughtfully. Not the normal texture of sausage, that was
for sure. "Smooth," K'mai said around the bite. His eyebrow arched and
he swallowed. "But you're right, it's good." He took another bite.

"Smooth. Smooooth sausages," L'keri said thoughtfully, testing out the
sound. "Smooth tubes? Smooth bites? Smoosages?" He grimaced. "Okay,
maybe not."

The bluerider laughed and then ate some more as he pondered. "Meaty rod.
Stuffed meat tube. Firm meat staff."

"Now we're talking." L'keri smirked. If he'd noticed the prohibition on
rude names, he didn't give any sign of paying attention. "How about
naming them in honor of our glorious leaders?" He eyed the remaining
portion of the sausage. "Bronzerider Big Boys... Wingleaders' Willies..."

K'mai snorted. "_Bluerider_ Big Boys. Or be more diplomatic and call it
Dragonriders' Pride."

"Brownrider Bangers," L'keri countered, feeling he should stand up for
his dragon. "Greenrider's Delights?" He considered. "Hey, there's no
rule about entering more than once, is there? We could put them all in
and let the ladies and gentlemen of the Lower Caverns decide which color
most suits the sausage."

"Increase our odds of winning?" K'mai laughed.

"Or we might get a prize for enthusiasm." L'keri took out a scrap of
paper and began noting down their entries. "Right, there's no such thing
as a bad idea. We could express our pride in our home Weyr?" He grinned.
"Dragonsfall Ding-Dongs. Sexy Southern Sizzlers."

K'mai took another bite, chewed, and swallowed. He nodded thoughtfully
and then said, "Dinner dick."

L'keri looked up from his scribbling and raised an eyebrow. "Succinct. I
like it." He made a note. "I knew it was a good idea, collaborating with
such a renowned sausage connoisseur."

"Who knew naming a food would be this fun?"

"Almost as much fun as eating it." The brownrider gleefully surveyed his
growing list of scurrilous suggestions. "That prize is as good as ours!"
