Slowly J’nne came back into himself. He tried to remember what had
happened…and where he was. A warm, decidedly feminine body was spooned
against his. A naked body. He blinked his eyes open, realising that he
too was naked. Did…no, Tribeth didn’t win, did he? J’nne swallowed
hard and blinked again. It was all coming back, Chioneth screaming her
intentions, Tribeth joining the other bronzes, the Flight, Tribeth
being close, so close.
Too close?
J’nne blinked again and dared to glance at the woman who shared the
same bed as him. No, she had brown hair, not black, and was small
where Saibra was tall. So Tribeth hadn’t won. J’nne let out the breath
he was holding, causing stray hairs of his partner to move.
The hairs tickled Kamalia's arm, causing her to turn her head towards
J'nne. "Hi," she said with a small smile. "Are you... yourself again?"
She hardly ever flight mothed, but the combination of feeling a new
lease on life after being cleared to fly 'Fall and the excitement of
the senior gold rising had drawn her towards the cluster of bronze and
brownriders. When a winner had been chosen, J'nne had been right there
and, in a burst of confidence, she had grabbed his hand and pulled him
to an empty room. What had followed had been intense, and slightly
strange, knowing the young bronzerider was still not fully in control
of himself. She had enjoyed it though, and hoped he was feeling ok.
“I…uh…think so.” Then it all came crashing down to him, someone
grabbing his hand, pulling him into the room and what had followed,
the intensity that had followed. Quickly he sat up, dark eyes large as
he looked at Kamalia. “Are you okay. I wasn’t too rough, was I?” If he
had been…J’nne could feel his stomach twist like he was going to throw
up. And Kamalia hadn’t been cleared to fly again that long ago.
"I'm fine," she said quickly. "Look! No blood or anything." She
uncovered her leg to show the red line of the wound that would likely
leave a small scar. "Don't worry. I knew what I was getting into." She
touched his arm in the hopes of calming him. "I've never done this for
a gold flight before, but it was kind of exciting. I hope you're ok
though. I'm pretty sure you didn't know who I was."
“I didn’t even know who I was.” He gave her an apologetic smile,
hoping she didn’t see the way his face had fell when she had said ‘no
blood!’ He reached over and touched her hand on his arm. “Are you sure
you’re okay? I just…Tribeth picked the wrong time to chase a gold for
the first time! And he got so close…” The last bit he whispered. Never
before had he seen his bronze or himself as Weyrleader material. More
of it was coming back, the wild chase, the way his slender lifemate
had stayed close"so very close"to the queen. The wild feelings from
the Flight were beginning to come back, but he pushed them back down.
"I'm great. Really." Her skin tingled where he touched it, but she
tried to ignore it. He seemed too worried about everything to be
interested in a second round of fun. She left her hand where it was
though. "It must be scary to be in a situation where a mating flight
means so much. Green flights are just fun. How is Tribeth doing?"
J’nne reached out to feel his lifemate fast asleep. “He’s currently
curled up with big sister Reanth, probably wanting to forget all about
it.” The grin he gave Kamalia showed her that his usual self was
coming back. “Give him a couple days and he’ll deny ever being a part
of it, you watch. Alaudath will be able to go back to embarrassing him
with her flirting!” Colour returned to his face when he chuckled,
thinking about his forefront bronze trying to get away from her much
more outgoing green.
"Well, she's due to rise in a few sevendays and will get very flirty,
so he'd better watch out," Kamalia teased. "And maybe someday he can
catch a junior queen." Assuming nothing else was going to happen
between them, she grabbed her shirt from where it had landed next to
the bed and put it on.
J’nne politely gathered her trousers from his end of the bed for her.
His fingers brushed her arm as he gave them to her and he let them
linger. “Thank you for rescuing me. I’m glad it was you.”
Why did he keep touching her? She had a soft spot for bronzeriders,
and his curly hair, dimples, and surprisingly long lashes didn't help.
**We're in the same Wing,** she told herself, although that did not
seem to matter at the moment. If she had not still been coming down
from the emotions of the gold flight, she might have been able to make
some kind of light-hearted joke. Instead, she went with honesty. "I'm
glad it was me too." Not sure what else to say, she stood to get her
underwear.
“Jaylene’s going to tease us,” J’nne said as he gathered his own
clothes and put them on. “Want to grab something to eat before our
wing descends on us and teases us to death?” He held a polite hand out
to her. “Let’s just hope my brother hasn’t got all of them taking bets
on us.”
She was quickly rebraiding her hair as he spoke and her stomach sank,
imagining his family and their wingmates poking fun at them. "Maybe
they'll be too focused on other things? Like the new Weyrleader?" She
doubted it.
Well, it was no use trying to hide away. She took the offered hand and
smiled. Shards, he was good looking. "Ok, let's get it over with."
