His head was pounding but there was far too much to do. He could not spend the day nursing his hangover, he hadn't the luxury of respite like others did. He was Weyrleader now and yesterday had proven to him that there was so very much for him to overcome in too short a time. He could not afford to rest.
Rubbing his head, I'serin made his way towards the Weyrling Barracks. He could have easily checked in through Aluneth but he needed to set his eyes on the Weyr's hope -- the weyrlings. He remembered how hard it had been for them when River Bluff fell, how despair had claimed some of those young survivors later that night, resurrecting grief, the dragons once again keening, and--
}: I'serin. Enough, :{ Aluneth said calmly, drawing his rider back to the present.
Would the scars of River Bluff ever heal?
No time to dwell.
He knocked on the Weyrlingmaster's door, expecting for T'lonas to answer but it was M'thos instead. "Weyrlingmaster," I'serin greeted with a nod of his aching head.
M'thos wasn't expecting the Weyrleader at his door, but wasn't about to correct him and send him to T'lonas' office right next door. "Weyrleader." He said. "Fianwyth didn't say you were coming. What can I do for you?" He opened the door a little wider, welcoming the bronzerider in.
I'serin stepped into the space as he answered, "I came to check in on the weyrlings. The...death of a dragon affects everyone and the young dragons..." He trailed off, his characteristically loquacious nature halted by the topic of grief.
"Well, we appreciate the concern." M'thos said. "But they're doing all right. T'lonas is with Chioneth's class now. K'yne and I just switched off with Aglayath's. They're just a few sevendays old and most of them were asleep when it happened. The older ones are just about ready to start /betweening/. It's mostly talking with their riders. Even with the Pass, not a lot of them think about actually fighting Thread before they Impress. Hard to fault them for it; I knew Thread was coming when I Impressed, but the reality didn't hit until we were in the thick of it."
The new Weyrleader remembered those days. Idyllic, despite the threat of Thread looming in the future. His father never let him forget, especially after he had Impressed Aluneth, that fighting Thread was a dragonrider's duty, quizzing him on it so much that a younger, unappreciative I'serin lost his temper more than once, annoyed. Now, I'serin realized how dear those lessons were and wished he had paid more attention. "Rarely are we ever ready," he said quietly, for the second time that sevenday.
Regrouping, he met M'thos's gaze. "So then, they are...on the mental and emotional mend?"
"Well... they weren't broken." M'thos said. "Big feelings are hard for little bodies. We're feeling our feelings. And then we're talking about our feelings. And then, with any luck, we're moving on from our feelings. No harm done. Honestly, it would have happened sooner or later. A well flown 'Fall is rarely without any casualties."
Injuries yes, casualties no, I'serin wanted to say, but he held his tongue. Assured that the weyrlings were alright, he let out a breath he had been holding. "Thank you, Weyrlingmaster. You were well chosen for your station. I strongly doubt I could have handled it better than you and your team."
"I'm sure T'lonas will be happy to hear it, even if I am crowing it to him." M'thos said lightly. "I have some extra time. Do you want to come up for a drink? You look like you need it."
I'serin almost declined the offer but he had made time to see to the weyrlings and he needn't not run to his next appointment just yet. "As long as it is not alcoholic," he replied, touching his pounding head.
M'thos laughed and clapped the new Weyrleader on the shoulder. "We have klah and tea. And my youngest makes sure we have no shortage of juice. Come on."
