T'gyrlan

M’kayre had been serious when he’d told I’serin that he already had some names in mind for his list of people who should be rotated into rank. The part he _hadn’t_ said out loud was how many of those people he would have put in charge right _now_, if the decision had been up to him.

Not all of them, of course. He was open to new faces, and he’d added a couple of younger bronze and brownriders that he hadn’t previously known well, but which seemed to be promising, to the list for rotations. But primarily, his focus was on a handful of people, and his personal timetable for those people was much sooner and much more permanent.

He watched Cobalt Wing’s drills (as best as one could from a distance, anyway, with Bhelth’s focus to help fill him in) and waited until they’d landed and finished, and he spotted T’gyrlan and Hanassath breaking away.

“Well flown,” he said, falling into step beside T’gyrlan. “Seems you’re both back in fighting form!”

“Damn right we are!” T’gyrlan’s flashing grin was sharpened by a fierce pride. He hadn’t let himself go to seed during his grounding, and since Hanassath had been cleared to fly, the pair had been drilling like madmen to get the bronze back in shape. Their progress in the last five months was hard earned. Every ounce of new muscle, a fresh victory. The T’gyrlan of old was emerging again, out of the long shadow of his accident. “Go on and eat, Hana.” T’gyrlan spoke aloud for M’kayre’s benefit, and saw the bronze off towards the feeding pens with a hearty slap on his flank.

“Still a ways to go,” T’gyrlan admitted more quietly, as they watched the bronze launch himself into the hunt. “He’s a bit shy of his old weight, but that will come. We can fly, we can fight, we can do our duty again" that’s what matters. But speaking of duty, congratulations, Weyrsecond.”

“Thank you,” M’kayre replied, clasping his hands behind his back. “About time, eh? And yes, I have faith that Hanassath will be back to his old self in no time at all. I know all of this work and waiting must have been killing you.” His normally rather severe expression softened somewhat. “I’ve never been so unfortunate… but I can imagine. Are you feeling… ambitious, yet?”

“Am I feeling myself yet?” T’gyrlan rephrased with a laugh, sharing a look with the man who’d been a mentor to him. “Yes, by Faranth. The wait was torture. These people here" They’ve no idea" They" I’m just an invalid to them. Cobalt needed a wingleader when I was cleared to return, and do you know who they gave it to? A wet-behind-the-ears Northerner. It was his first command.” T’gyrlan was self aware enough to know he wasn’t exactly ready for the role five months ago, but to rank below _that_. “It was galling.”

“They haven’t seen what you can do,” M’kayre agreed sadly. “But _I_ have. I aim to change things around here. We have young up-and-coming talent languishing, true, and I have every intention of supporting their education as well. But, primarily, there are experienced riders like yourself who are being utterly wasted. I’d like to see you with wingsecond knots at least within the month, if I can at all affect that.”

T’gyrlan took a moment to digest that as he peeled off his flight cap and goggles. It felt good to be _seen_. “If you could do something… M’kayre. I won’t let you down.”
