E'kavas

E'kavas was late getting home. Stormy drills, a new Weyrleader, a 'Fall looming. Roquath had relayed that T'gyrlan and Hanassath were looking for him, and then relayed back that he'd be a bit yet. The storm had calmed to a drizzle by the time Roquath finally landed on his weyrledge, rumbling a greeting to the waiting bronze.

"Shards- were you waiting long?" E'kavas asked as he stepped inside. He peeled a rain-soaked jacket and boots off before moving further inside and (thank goodness for T'gyrlan) set the kettle to boil. Even in the midst of a Dragonsfall summer, E'kavas was cold.

“Kevia kept me entertained. I put her to bed a ‘mark ago.” T’gyrlan had been studying since, covering the table of E’kavas’ little kitchen with wing formations, sketched from memory. He shifted to the stove as E’kavas joined him, stoking the fire to further warm the room and heat the kettle. “What kept you? Good news I hope? Is Little I’serin keeping you on?”

"Where else is he going to get the good wingsail wax?" E'kavas said with a chuckle. "Yeah. We won't have a Weyrsecond in place ahead of Threadfall tomorrow, so I had a bit of extra work to fill in the gap. And of course getting I'serin acclimatized. He's got the theory, sure, but not as much experience as K'reyel or R'enh." He turned back from the stove as finally noticed what T'gyrlan had been working on. "Have you made wing formations out of my spice rack?"

“I probably should have used the spice rack. Greens could have been herbs… What would bronze be? Saffron?” T’gyrlan chuckled and swept up his drawings to make space on the table. “I just helped myself to your scrap hides. I needed to test my memory- but never mind that. I want to hear about the new leadership. You’re still on as wingsecond, but not weyrsecond? What more is I’serin looking for?”

"A bronzerider with Weyrleader experience, I should hope." E'kavas answered as he grabbed two mugs and a jar of tea leaves. "I was only helping R'enh until he wasn't Acting Weyrleader anymore, that's all. I did give I'serin a list of recommendations, though, though I have a sneaking suspicion I know who it's going to be."

“Don’t sell yourself short. You got a good look at how things are run and bronze doesn’t always mix well with bronze. A local veteran might undermine I’serin. _I’d_ pick you,” said T’gyrlan matter of factly. Grabbing the sugar bowl from its place on the shelf he snuck a cube as a snack. “Who do you think it’ll be? Did you put in a good word for your favorite bronzerider?”

E'kavas let the compliment slide with a dismissive wave. He wouldn't have said no, but he also didn't want that spotlight on him, either. "I said you were a Wingleader back home and great at it, but that I'm also biased." E'kavas did not mention that he also said that T'gyrlan needed a hobby. He made a disgruntled face, "Pretty sure it's going to M'kayre."

“M’kayre!” T’gyrlan actually sounded glad and laughed at the brownrider’s disgruntled expression. “He means well, you know. He’s just very… intense. That saves lives in a ‘fall.” After A’kades, T’gyrlan probably owed M’kayre the most for straightening him out before the Pass. That surely saved _his_ life. “I hope he goes with your word, bias or not, but M’kayre could be good for Dragonsfall.”

"He'll be something for Dragonsfall." E'kavas said. He didn't stop making the face, though. "He hasn't made any friends. Transferring was hard for all of us, but…well, I hope the intensity works out. I'serin could get undermined by a River Bluff veteran, too."

“Cynic,” T’gyrlan scolded with an easy smile. “M’kayre was good to me when I was a wild young bronzer. He didn't tear me down. If I’serin can't withstand him then he's not the man I think he is.” Or a man who should be in leadership, was the unsaid rider.

"Yeah, well." E'kavas shrugged. "I hope he's got the fortitude. Aluneth didn't need to take that into account to win the Weyrleadership." The kettle whistled, and E'kavas busied himself with making tea. "Is that why you came by? Wanted to see if one of us got Weyrsecond?"

“You can’t blame a guy for being curious.” Or hopeful. “I’serin hasn’t exactly been a social vtol here himself. It’s not unreasonable to think we might be on his short list.”

"That's true. He offered it to R'enh first, but R'enh wanted to be Cobalt's Wingleader. So I assume you'll get that surprise tomorrow as the Wings assemble." The heat from the mug felt good against his cold hands, and E'kavas slumped down in his chair and held the mug tightly as the tea steeped. "Too many changes right before Threadfall. It's not ideal."

“K’rel wasn’t ideal. He lacked experience, not just wingleading, but flying in the southern style. I welcome R’enh, the wing will be safer under him,” T’gyrlan took the other mug, and plopped three sugars in. His own prospects might be better too. He hadn’t been shy about his reservations and had clashed with the northern K’rel.

"I hope so." E'kavas said. "Even the smallest change can knock someone off their game. Hopefully the rest of Cobalt feels the same."

“Either way, here’s to a safe ‘fall.” T’gyrlan lifted his mug to toast.

"I'll toast to that."
