nublado means "cloudy" in Spanish
It was a rainy day and Vaile wanted nothing more than to spend some time with her children, reading a book over a hot drink, but there was a restlessness within her that just would _not_ go away. She thought, with Liranth cleared to fly earlier that month, that she would be less on edge, especially on a day with such a gentle rain. Vaile combed her fingers through her hair as she crossed the weyr, intending to ask Liranth for a ride down to the Lower Caverns, when she felt a flush of heat through her, so sharp that she gasped.
Liranth, on the ledge, rattled her wings and then let loose a lusty roar. Her molten gaze swept through the Weyr, challenging the males, and then, she was off, a green streak heading straight into the grey clouds.
Vaile exhaled. Well, maybe this would work off that restless feeling. She carefully made her way down towards the reserved rooms, wondering who would win this time.
Arinoth was certainly interested in the lovely Liranth and had been keeping an eye on her for most of the morning. Did it look strange that a hulking brown dragon was perched on the rainy cliffs staring at Vaile's weyrledge? Because that's exactly what Arinoth had been doing. The moment the green launched into the sky he sprang from his perch, sending a spray of raindrops from his outstretched wings.
K'yne was not disappointed when he arrived in the flight room. Vaile was a lovely woman and he would be pleased to win.
Domorth wasn't a frequent chaser, but when he was interested, he was _interested_. He took off abruptly after Liranth, unmindful of the rain on his hide and splashing against his face as he climbed.
T'lonas, caught woefully off-guard, cleared his throat and excused himself, handing his current class over to M'thos with an apologetic half-grin.
Sebeth made his intent to chase clear and as K'mai hurried to join the other riders, he wondered why his blue was interested. He hadn't chased Liranth before and K'mai himself wasn't that familiar with Vaile. }:I want her, that is all,:{ Sebeth said before turning his full attention on the glowing green.
It wouldn't be a greenflight without Roquath roaring an answer. E'kavas had just sat down in his good chair with a book and a mug of klah with a little bit of whipped cream on top when he heard the roar from the weyrledge. He groaned, sliding down into his chair, and glared at the empty space where Roquath should have been. He was cold, he was tired. He gave the hot klah a sad look before he heaved himself up and headed to the flightrooms.
Torth had been watching for her. He wanted this, of course. And he knew that K'far did, too. He may have wanted to wait and get to this point the slow, boring human way. But he must have known that Liranth would rise before he managed it, and that Torth would chase and win her.
**Will you be sad if you don't manage it?**
}:Will you?:{
K'far did not answer in words. He merely excused himself and went to the flight rooms.
Vaile could feel the cool rain, slick on Liranth's hide. Feel the delicate clouds part as she flew through. Hidden, then seen, a gray and green game of hide-and-seek. One moment, Liranth would drop below the cloud cover, the next she was veiled from sight. Only her taunting roars gave her away.
Arinoth wove in and out of clouds, sometimes growling with
frustration. He would see a slip of the green and then he would burst
through the cloud cover only to discover that she had eluded him. She
was wiley and he loved it.
Torth did not like the clouds. They made things complicated. Flights should be straightforward. Simple. See the goal, reach the goal. He wanted to concentrate on Liranth alone, but now more than ever, he had to be keenly aware of what his competitors were doing as well.
While losing sight of the green was irritating, it gave Sebeth a good chance to show off his speed and agility. If he misjudged where Liranth was going, he could adjust much more quickly than the bronzes and browns and get a few dragonlengths closer to the green before she dipped into the clouds again. }:I will fly you well. Let me show you.:{
Roquath roared in answer. It was harder for him to dive out of the clouds than the smaller browns and blues. He kept himself flying in the direction that he saw a flash of green and the echo of a roar. He could beat those bronzes, easy, and threaten a bite out of Sebeth if he needed to.
Following the wily green's movements was no easy feat for Domorth, but he pressed on, enjoying the chase, reveling in the feel of rain and mist on his hide and the cool air in his lungs. He gave a roar of his own in response -- to her, to Roquath, to anyone who would listen -- and cut up slightly above the cloud-cover, hoping for a better sightline for Liranth's next moves.
A new roar answered them as summer sky Vorquinth entered the flight, rocketing up from somewhere to the left. }: I will catch you! :{ he declared, aiming straight for Liranth.
}: You will NOT! :{ Liranth roared, disgusted and insulted. The dragon responsible for Napeth's death and her own injury! Here! In _HER_ flight! The arrogance! The audacity! She twisted away from the males, sliding just out of reach of Sebeth, back into the clouds to hide.
When she erupted from the gray again, it was right in the path of Domorth.
