Varethos

Varethos

Lemhask was on cloud nine. He had been completely unable " and unwilling, besides " to remove the giddy smile from his face since the moment he had hugged " actually hugged, can you believe it? " the cutest, nicest, bestest boy on the face of the whole world, Tannock.

And it was not just a friendly hug. Tannock _liked_ him back. Only in his wildest dreams had Lemhask ever hoped this could actually happen. It had been everything he had wanted it to be and more. Tannock gave even better hugs than Lemhask had dreamed he would.

“Hi, Vare!” Lemhask greeted his brother as he practically floated past. He had intended to tell their dads this singularly most wonderful news, but he happened to encounter a brother first. And he was in a singularly happy mood. It was unlikely anyone had ever seen his face look quite this elated before. Not even a trace of grump or shoulder chip. If one did not know better, they could be excused for assuming he had enjoyed something a little spicier than a hug.

"Hey, Lem." Varethos looked up from where he was comfortably sat, practically folded into a chair in the candidate common area in what looked like an uncoordinated tangle of limbs. The kid seemed particularly _weirder_ than usual, and after a moment of consideration and a look of longing, he replaced his bookmark and closed it. "So," He said loudly and forced, "What has got you in such a good mood?"

Lemhask leaned in close and put his hands on the arm of Varethos’s chair and in the cutest, most genuinely happy little voice, he admitted,

“Tannock hugged me. He _likes_ me!”

"Oh. _Well_." Varethos said as seriously as he could. His voice cracked a little with barely contained laughter. "Have you talked to Dads about that? You have to make sure you're hugging safely, you know."

“I'm not gonna squish him,” Lemhask rolled his eyes. “You're the first person I've seen since we got back from rock climbing, but I asked both of them how to get him to like me back when he first got here" absolutely useless, both of them, not even one helpful bit of advice.”

"I don't know why we go to them for anything." Varethos agreed after clearing his throat. At least his voice didn't crack this time. "You were rock climbing? Did you make sure your hands were clean before you did any hugging? You don't want to pass on a fungus or anything."

“You're a fungus. We hugged before that part,” said Lemhask. And after, too, but. He was not going to give anyone a fungus.

"No, you." Varethos teased. "So are you two going steady now? Have you graduated out of doodling your names in little hearts in your notebook? Because Dad can see you doing it in class."

Lemhask blushed deep red. He was not so upset that Dad had seen him. Only that he had mentioned it to Varethos.

“I… guess? We didn't say ‘going steady,’ like that. We just said we’d talk to each other whenever we got scared.”

"That sounds like going steady to me." Varethos said with a grin. "That's more commitment than Nosarre and I."

Lemhask beamed, lost for a moment in a happy reverie of holding hands and hugging and leaning on shoulders. He sighed happily.

“Well, I guess you two better get your shit together, then,” he said at last.

Varethos finally broke down into laughter. "No way. You two will be picking out curtains in your weyr before the two of us get serious. You better keep an eye out for dads. Soon as they hear about it they're going to rock-paper-scissors who gets to give you 'the greens and the blues' talk. And that's separate from the group talk Dad has to give us in class."

“Ugh, gross.” Lemhask shuddered. He much preferred imagining picking out curtains with Future Tannock than talking about _that_ with either dad. “We're not doing anything like that.”

"It's even worse now that there's a quiz." Varethos griped. "That's why you gotta make sure not to get a fungus or anything. It's gross, but then Dads won't let you hear the end of it." Nor the brothers, really. The family forgot nothing.

“Yeah, you learn that the hard way?” Lemhask grinned from ear to ear. “Did Nosarre give you a fungus? Or did you give it to her?”

"Pff. The only thing Nosare's given me is a hangover."

“Is she… intoxicating?” Lemhask fluttered his eyelashes. And his grin was especially wide, as he was rather proud of himself for having come up with that word so quickly.

"Yes." Varethos said with a smug wink. "Good luck with The Talk from Dads, Lem buddy. You aren't going to get away from it being all floaty like that."

Lemhask’s smile soured. Well. He could deal with it. Tannock was worth it.
