The sun was setting on another fine autumn day, bathing the weyr in a golden haze. Everyone was beginning to stir from their work and stream towards the dining hall for the dinner service. Well, not everyone. Earlier that day, the candidates of Dragonsfall planned a party and made a bet. Now, they began to gather. Alone and in groups, they made their way up to the sunlit heights, and then further, to the edge of the forest by the Starstones where the trees would provide some shelter for their revelry.
Nosarre watched the party take shape. She brought her own wine, paid for by her own hard work and special commissions, and wrinkled her nose at the drinks some of the other candidates brought. Merhaskel and Varethos weren't the only kids that stole from the back of their parents or foster-parents cabinets, taking a little from each bottle so as not to be noticed, but making the concoction inside a disgusting mess. It'd get them drunk though, Nosarre supposed, and for some that may be enough. Some were more creative in their quest for alcohol, and some were even brazen enough to swipe from a Lower Caverns storeroom. Oselle will probably notice sooner rather than later, but by then the wine will have already been drunk and the hangovers cured.
A few candidates working in the Lower Caverns came ladened with baskets and sacks, carrying food and drink, laughing and joking as they did. Spirits were high, and why shouldn’t they be? With eggs on the sand, this might be the last big party some of them would enjoy for a while to come. If they succeeded in Impressing a dragon, that would mean months of abstinence of all sorts. It was time for a last hurrah. Time to drink, to laugh, and be young and carefree.
As the party began just inside the treeline, Halia stepped back to observe her work. She'd taken over organizing once people started appearing with their ill-gotten goods. A few kids were unsuccessful in gathering food or alcohol, but grabbed glow baskets that now hung from low branches, casting soft, shifting pools of light that made the whole clearing feel like a hidden, enchanted world. Under one towering pine, Halia had arranged the collection of food, from fresh loaves of bread and sharp wedges of cheese to baskets overflowing with dried fruit, pastries and dragontails still warm from the kitchens. Nearby, under another tree, a row of wineskins, flasks, and bottles were lined up--each one counted and recounted as part of the night’s little wager: the bet to see if the boys or the girls could acquire the most libations. Ultimately everyone won, in that there were drinks enough for everyone and then some.
As the party found its rhythm, the candidates spread out across the clearing. Some joined a raucous game of Truth or Dare, others split off to settle under the trees and make themselves comfortable on the thick carpet of leaves. Still others wandered to the edge of the heights to look out over the valley below, where the lights of the Weyr glowed softly in the gathering dusk. Someone struck up a tune on a gitar, the notes bright and clear against the quiet of the forest, and voices rose to join the song, tentative at first but growing bolder, strengthened by the drink and good company.
It would be a night to remember.
