Description: C'rin and J'hael discuss the politics within the Weyr
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 21 of Turn 12
Notes: Mentioned: R'enh, M'kayre, L'val, I'serin, Ekavas
"Well, J'hael," C'rin said as he took up a seat beside the bluerider
at Cobalt's table. "Do you feel better now that R'enh is back as our
Wingleader?" It was no secret that Cobalt Wing still held many
dragonriders from River Bluff. Their Wing's nickname was "Mini River
Bluff." Not exactly unique, but fairly true, except for J'hael and
R'enh, neither of whom were from the destroyed Weyr.
"It's good to have him back," J'hael said, "but I can't say I wasn't
hoping he'd win. You know how I hate change," it was said in a joking
tone, but it was at least partially true. "Not that there's anything
wrong with I'serin," he added quickly. "I'm sure he'll settle in. Do
you think they're going to butt heads?"
"Who? I'serin and R'enh?" C'rin asked, biting into a stacked meat and
cheese sandwich.
"Yeah. I hope they won't. That's the last thing we need, but... "
J'hael fiddled with his mug. "It's got to be tense."
C'rin shook his head. "I'serin's too polite, and R'enh's too
professional. Personally, I'm glad R'enh is back as our Wingleader. I
know I'm supposed to be all 'Mini River Bluff forever' but," he
shrugged, "I thought he was a good Wingleader. Besides, now the
Weyrleader _and_ his Second are both former Bluffers." Being from
River Bluff himself made C'rin 'one of them' he supposed, but having
lived in Dolphin Cove for a while after River Bluff fell, he wasn't
quite as hung up on it as others.
"Oh no, River Bluff is taking over, whatever will we do," J'hael said
with mock horror. "Good thing I've cleverly integrated into the
'outsider' wing. That'll be useful in the new regime." As if he'd done
any of it on purpose, rather than just being used to fill a blue rider
shaped hole in the wing.
The younger dragonrider laughed. "That's right, us River Bluffers have
you right here," he raised his arm like a mother dragon covering her
eggs, "under our wing."
"Do you know I'serin well? I don't really," which wasn't surprising,
considering J'hael tended to keep to himself. "He's not like your
cousin or something is he?"
"Nah, he's a lot older than me. And I was more interested in a girl
while I was at River Bluff than keeping up with bronzeriders." His
mind briefly flashed to Riveenata. He just as quickly shoved his
memories of her into a corner of his mind that he wouldn't revisit
later. "People seem really surprised he won, though. I'm not sure why.
He's a bronzerider in his thirties, that's pretty common
first-time-Weyrleader age, isn't it? And why are people surprised that
he wasn't a Wingleader? I mean, there can only be so many Wingleaders,
right?"
J'hael raised an eyebrow curiously at the mention of a girl, but he
didn't change the subject to press. "I don't get it, either. We've got
more bronzes then wings, so this isn't really unexpected. Maybe he'll
work to bring some new blood into leadership." He was relieved they'd
just gotten their wingleader back instead of a new one.
"Some of the Dragonsfall natives definitely seem a little perturbed
that one of the 'in' bronzeriders didn't get it. I think people had a
lot of money on L'val or R'enh. One a Weyrsecond, the other a
Wingleader. Oh man, Dasveth was absolutely pumped when he saw Roquath
do so well in the flight. He's pretty sure now he can catch a younger
gold."
"Can you imagine if he'd won? Some of the bronzes might have died on
the spot of shock." J'hael paused, then added, "E'kavas might have
died of the shock. He doesn't seem like the type who would want the
position."
"E'kavas die of shock? Could you imagine _M'kayre's_ reaction to
losing to a _brown_? He already thinks he's Faranth's gift to the
Weyr." C'rin said this in a low snicker since you could never be sure
who might overhear and tattle.
J'hael made a face, "I don't want to imagine M'kayre's reaction. He's
not the easiest to get along with at the best of times," J'hael said
diplomatically.
"Did your Dasveth even try to chase this time?" The bluerider hadn't
really paid much attention to who all had participated.
"Oh no, he's a realist. He's young and would be _lucky_ to catch a
young gold in her first flight, much less a senior queen." C'rin shook
his head. "He doesn't fly many greens either, which I'm not
complaining about. I hate the inconvenience of being in the middle of
something and then being called away for a flight."
"It's the worst," J'heal agreed. "Serolth chases more than I'd like,
but I usually get some warning. He likes to flirt with the greens
first." the bluerider rolled his eyes. "Thankfully he's not as much of
a charmer as he thinks he is and rarely wins. I'm glad he's never
going to get it in his head to chase any of the golds. You have my
condolences there- it seems very disruptive."
"You know what's _not_ disruptive? Okay, maybe I should say, is a
_welcome_ distraction?" C'rin's look was conspiratorial. "There's a
great tavern on the road leading out of Dragonsfall towards Amber
Hills. Best food. Best drinks. Good music. Sometimes that's where I
head when there's a mating flight."
"Really?" J'hael leaned forward, "Best drinks as in awful and strong,
or actually best?" Neither was necessarily a deal breaker. "Dasveth
doesn't sulk about missing out?" His blue certainly would.
"Best drinks as in _actually_ the best. And no, Dasveth's not a
sulker, fortunately." C'rin felt fortunate in many ways that his brown
didn't mind not flying after _every_ green that rose. He knew some
brownriders who were less fortunate.
"You'll have to show me the place one day when we're not in drills,"
J'hael said with a grin. "I could use a hiding place."
