Saibra

Saibra

**It's actually kind of nice out here,** Saibra said to Chioneth. The
goldrider had brought a chair out and was sitting beside her lifemate,
who was busy brooding over the eggs. Having been born and raised in an
island Weyr, the cold climate of Dragonsfall had not come naturally to
Saibra. Over the Turns she'd begun to acclimate, but she still found a
warm beach and clear blue water to be her favorite destination.

As she sat on the hot sands with her eyes closed, she could almost
pretend that she was sitting shoreside at Dolphin Cove.

Interrupting her daydream was the sound of Chioneth fussing about. The
senior queen was making sure the eggs were receiving enough heat on
the sands.

Peeking her eyes open, Saibra stared at the gold egg. Soon another
woman would learn the highs and lows of having a queen dragon.

~*~ Flashback ~*~

"Are you wearing anything _under_ your Candidate robe?" Saibra asked
as she stood, half-dressed in the Candidate Barracks. The loud hum of
dragons filled the Weyr and people were scurrying about in a state of
chaos.

"Well, duh, Saibra! You're not planning to go out there in your
nothing-at-alls are you?" Cyvella squawked.

Saibra grinned. She loved getting Cyvella bent out of shape. Cyvella
came from a Hold and found all of the ridiculous "Weyr things" that
Saibra did appalling.

"I guess not this time." Saibra winked as she pulled on a pair of
breeches underneath the white robe. A simple rope belt was then tied
around her waist. "Well, let's get this Hatching over with. They'll
let us have some wine at the Hatching Feast tonight, and I might even
get a dance with S'keryl." Her eyes lit with the promise of seeing the
brownrider that had just graduated to the Fighting Wings.

"S'keryl, S'keryl, S'keryl," Cyvella groused. "I hope you Impress just
so you have to remain celibate for a little while longer. It would do
you good."

Saibra rolled her eyes.

"Saibra and Cyvella! If you don't get out here right this instant,
you'll be scrubbing the Dining Cavern floor while we go to the
Hatching!"

Now both girls rolled their eyes. "Yes, sir," they droned with zero
enthusiasm as they followed the Weyrlingmaster out of the barracks.

--

**What a blast!** Saibra thought as she dodged out of the way of a
green dragonet who was fumbling to get to her rider. Being so close to
the small, but dangerous dragonets was exciting. Cyvella, who was
squeamish at the sight of blood, did not seem as thrilled to be around
the baby dragons with the long talons.

Her eyes looked into the stands. She hadn't been able to spot S'keryl
yet, but she wanted to see if he was watching her.

"Saibra! Move!" Cyvella shoved her out of the way, hard enough to send
her sprawling onto the hot sands.

"Cyvella!" Saibra exclaimed with embarrassment and anger. She imagined
S'keryl somewhere up in the stands laughing at her. She scrambled
quickly to her feet, wiping gritty sand from her knees and palms.

"Cyvella!" she gasped. Cyvella lay on the sands with a deep talon gash
through her shoulder. Red blood blossomed on her snowy white robe.

"You stupid brat," Cyvella bit out. The blue dragonet that had
trampled Cyvella was now being ushered off the sands with his new
rider.

"I'm so sorry, Cyvella," Saibra said as the Weyrlingstaff and a healer
rushed out and began lifting the trampled girl off the sands. A green
dragonet trailed behind them however, and before they took Cyvella,
Saibra heard her friend tell the name of the green dragonet.
"Mierath."

}:Are you quite finished?:{ a frosty voice asked.

Saibra turned around, the blood draining from her face as she came
nose-to-nose with a soft pastel-gold dragonet. The way the gold held
her head and flicked of her tail said she was annoyed.

**Chioneth.** The name was in Saibra's mind as if she'd always known
it, as if it had always been there. The feelings of warmth, love, and
acceptance that washed over her made her skin tingle. All thoughts of
S'keryl were long gone, now there was Chioneth, and only Chioneth.

~*~ End Flashback ~*~

}:That's a nice memory,:{ Chioneth said, having shared in Saibra's thoughts.

Saibra tilted her head back and smiled up at her lifemate. They could
hardly be nose-to-nose anymore unless Chioneth lowered that
arrow-shaped head all the way down to where Saibra sat. Her lightly
golden hue, however, had remained the same. Dainty but strong. Elegant
but sassy. In many ways, they had become mirrors of one another.

**I hope whoever impresses your golden egg has the same luck that we did.**

Chioneth's wing came around Saibra, chair and all. }:Impossible. We
are the luckiest.:{

Saibra smiled since Chioneth was rarely sentimental. **I wonder how
Cyvella and Mierath are doing.** She hadn't heard from their
clutchmates in a few months. They normally kept in touch via letters.

Their Weyrlinghood had been just as tumultuous as their Candidacy,
especially as Saibra had navigated her newfound popularity among boys.
Boys flocked to goldriders. It had been both a blessing and a curse
for teenage Saibra.

She had impressed at fifteen and while it had seemed like a grand
adventure at the time, she had often wished she could have been older.
In hindsight, she would have appreciated the Weyrling lessons and the
special tutoring from the Weyr's goldriders much more if she had been
a little older.

**At least we have more mature Candidates lined up for you,** she
thought, looking at the gold egg. During an Interval a young Weyrling
wasn't a big concern, but now that Thread was falling, Saibra
preferred the older Candidates.

}:Piketh's is here for a visit.:{ Chioneth interjected into Saibra's musings.

Saibra smiled. Rasme. **Perfect. Let her know where I am.**
