Arrilon and Kamalia relaxed on her couch, empty plates on the table
and half empty glasses of wine in their hands. Arrilon could not
remember the last time he had been in her weyr. She usually picked him
up at the Harper Hall and then they went /between/ somewhere. However,
with Alaudath still unable to go /between/, she had sent a friend to
pick him up and bring him to her. Seeing both dragon and rider healing
had been a relief. They would be back to normal soon.
"So," Kamalia said mischievously. "Any lovely ladies at the Hall?"
"I'm not talking girls with you," Arrilon replied, rolling his eyes.
She poked his side. "Oh, come on. No one at all has caught your eye?
Or, is there anyone who is interested in you, but you aren't
interested in them? I would have thought a handsome Journeyman would
be a great catch."
"I've been busy with my studies. In a few Turns, I hope to be a Senior
Journeyman."
"That's great, but I thought you wanted a wife and kids. Or have plans
changed?" Kamalia had no interest in settling down, but she knew her
brother was very different. She could easily see him as a husband and
father.
He gave an exasperated sigh. "You sound just like my friend, Tyrak. He
was just telling me I should find a wife if I want to marry, while at
the same time warning me against a young woman."
"Ooh, what young woman?" This sounded interesting.
"No one." He waved his hand. "Lindora. She works in the kitchens. We
were actually talking last sevenday, while I was waiting for you. Then
she checked on me to ask if you were ok. That's all."
"That doesn't sound like no one. No woman would just randomly start
talking with you." He was so oblivious sometimes. "She's definitely
interested. Is she pretty?"
"Sure? I don't know. She's a young widow with a daughter and Tyrak
thinks she's desperate to remarry. I just think she was being nice."
Maybe Tyrak was right though.
Kamalia sat up. "What, what? Young widow with a daughter? This sounds
like the start to a Harper tale. The poor woman finds the man of her
dreams, who adopts her daughter. And they live happily ever after. Or,
like Tyrak said, she's desperate and willing to marry anyone." She
shrugged. "I wish I could go to the Hall undercover just to meet her."
Arrilon was horrified at the thought of his sister sneaking around the
Harper Hall. "It's good you can't go /between/ yet. That's a terrible
idea. What if she realized you were my sister?"
"We don't look that much alike. She'd never know." She had made the
suggestion just to get a rise out of him but, the more she thought
about it, the more fun it seemed. "You know," she thought out loud,
"we should be cleared to go /between/ just before Turn's End. What if
I came for a visit? We could celebrate for a bit together." And, with
the time difference, she could even celebrate first with Arrilon and
then return to the Weyr for more fun.
"I don't know if I like this." While spending more time with his
sister would be nice, he did not want her causing any incidents.
"Well, we don't need to decide now." Besides, if she decided to come
for a visit, there was nothing he could do about it. "Let's keep
talking about you though, and what you're looking for in a wife..."
A few wine glasses later, and all Kamalia was able to get out of
Arrilon was that he liked the idea of her being a crafter, like him.
And that, while the Harper Hall had plenty of female apprentices,
there were few Journeywomen. As they chatted, her thoughts turned to a
certain dolphineer, and she began concocting a Turn's End plan.
