The Sands were scorching beneath Ekirim’s shoes, the air thick with the heat and the hum of dragons above. The hatching was in full swing, and despite having a few under his belt already, he could feel the weight of the moment pressing on him. Dragonets were everywhere now, scrambling in their first moments of life, their instincts wild and hungry. The sound of cracking shells and excited screeches filled the air, but Ekirim felt oddly calm. He could handle this.
It didn't bring a wave of anxiety like it did some, and the fear that a dragonet may not pick him didn't materialize. He didn't come to this with any expectations, nor any grand dreams, much to the confusion and sometimes annoyance of those around him. He had been happy at Amber Hills and happy still at Dragonsfall, and it hardly mattered whether he Impressed or not.
He thought he might, when that blue dragonet raced towards him, otherwise he would've stepped aside as he was told. But the blue had given him a long look before carelessly batting him aside, leaving a gash that would probably need extra attention once it was all over.
He wiped his brow, eyes scanning the hatching grounds, when something caught his attention.
A large bronze dragonet. Perhaps even the largest of the clutch, built thick and strong like a beast of burden and nearly the same size, though still a bit clumsy, his wings not yet fully unfurled. The dragon’s hide was the same dull beige Ekirim had joked about for months, with a subtle sheen of metallic that he wouldn't have been able to notice if he hadn't been standing so close and staring so intently.
The moment their gazes locked, Ekirim felt something shift. There was no doubt in his mind now: this was it. This was the one.
The bronze stepped forward, slow and steady, muscles rippling beneath his hide. Remembering that careless blue, stepped back, raising a hand out in front of him as if that might help dissuade the beast from surging forward. But the bronze continued to step forward and Ekirim back until there was hardly any space left. His gaze never wavered, and Ekirim couldn't help but grin.
The dragonet stopped in front of him, not with a snarl or a rush, but with a calm, deliberate step. Ekirim could almost hear the thoughts in his mind, swirling and strong, yet simple. Then came the _feeling_, an overwhelming pull, a command that settled in his chest, as clear as anything.
}: Here. Eat. Now.:{
Ekirim blinked, a laugh bubbling up despite the seriousness of the moment. Less than words, more than a simple creature. It was more than he had expected, exactly what J'ler and K'aur and his friends had been saying (not quite). He was firm, direct, commanding. And yet, there was no aggression, only a quiet certainty that Ekirim couldn’t ignore.
The bronze’s gaze never faltered. He lowered his head slightly, nudging Ekirim’s chest gently. The touch was warm, almost comforting. There was a quiet, insistent pulse of feeling that followed the touch. Ekirim let out a breath, a slow exhale as his heart settled into place.
This was it. This was happening. He smiled widely, his grin a little crooked but full of confidence. "Food, yes. As much as you can eat, buddy. Norrianth." The name came unbidden to his mind, perfect and strong.
Norrianth tilted his head slightly, eyes whirling with what could only be described as satisfaction.
Ekirim scratched the bronze’s eyeridges, laughing quietly to himself. "C'mon, Norri. You're going to follow me to the food, right?" He asked.
Norrianth snorted in agreement, matching E'kirim's careful steps out of the cavern.
