The hatching was turning out just like Halia’s nightmares. Well, her nightmares didn’t have Ceauren blaring cheerfully in the background, but they _did_ feature egg upon egg shattering and dragonet after dragonet finding their lifemate-- and no one finding her. It hurt that they didn’t even look at her way. Time after time, those faceted eyes slid over her like she wasn’t even there. Like she was nothing. If one of them just paused to _really_ look at her, really _consider_ her, she felt like she might have a chance. It would be one thing to be rejected, but to never even be considered… She couldn’t bear it.

Over half the clutch had hatched and Impressed. This was her last chance. There were what, a dozen or so eggs left? How many of them green? She’d even take a blue, like Zaphare. The gold egg didn’t seem to be budging. Maybe it was dud. That’d be a problem for the Weyr, but Halia couldn’t bring herself to care. She had more immediate issues.

Throwing caution to the wind, she lunged towards the next flash of green she saw. Turns of candidate lessons said there was no forcing Impression, that you had to give the dragonets space and time to choose, but those same lessons had gotten her absolutely nowhere. It was time to try something different. “Look at me, scorch you. Look at me!”

Well, the dragon looked at her. It’d be hard pressed not to, as Halia had thrown herself directly into her path. Their eyes met a split second before the sleek green head connected with her stomach and dragon and girl went tumbling in a tangle of arms, wings and talons. The wind was knocked clean out of Halia, just as something else burst into being. There was a sudden, enveloping feeling of wholeness. It filled her chest, even as pain blossomed there, it filled her mind. With it came a voice, full of care and concern, and love.

}:Oh my goodness, oh dear, oh shells and sand!:{ the voice, Arimith, exclaimed, flapping her basil-green wings in a dither. }:Are you alright, my dearest? You just... You just _threw_ yourself in front of me. I was on my way to you. Didn’t you see?:{

This was it. Impression was finally happening and Halia was face down in the sand, tearing and wheezing. A stinging sensation on her thigh told her she probably had a scratch or two as well.

The voice in her head was scolding, but so loving and warm that there was no real bite to it. Arimith just wanted her to be okay and Halia was anxious to reassure her. “I’m alright,” she gasped, spitting out some sand and groping for her new lifemate. She felt damp hide, a foreleg, and then someone was behind her, hauling her bodily onto her feet-- and she finally laid eyes on the most perfect green ever shelled.

“Oh-- Arimith! You’re _wonderful_.” Dimly Halia became aware that K’yne was supporting her, but she still sagged towards the hatchling, throwing an arm around her slender neck as the enormity of the moment really sunk in. “I waited so long for you,” she sobbed.

}: I’m sorry I made you wait, :{ Aramith crooned apologetically, sifting through the tumult of her lifemate’s thoughts. }: And I’m sorry I made you hurt. But I’m here now. I will _always_ be here. :{

"Almost there," K'yne said as he helped Halia to a chair. Nearby another member of the Weyrlingstaff was already coming toward Arimith with a bowl of butchered meat. "A healer is on the way to give you a look over as well."

Girl and dragon were hardly listening, They were completely wrapped up in each other until the meat came.
