G’wen was still getting used to being in a new Weyr. Things were different, including accents. So when the serving lady shouted what he thought was his name, G’wen went over to her to get his dinner. But the tray she handed him was not what he had ordered. He stood there, confused, holding a pile of food that seemed to be for either a man much bigger than the tiny green rider, or a group of people.
“I…uh…” He helplessly tried to get her attention, but she was busy and had already turned around to serve another rider. He found himself pushed into the dining Hall with his giant mount of food. What now?
"... Wait, hey!" A bronzerider eeled through the crowd, approaching G'wen at a trot. "Hey! Did she just say G'weld? Is that your name too? How did _that_ happen? Hello by the way!"
G’wen grinned and held up the tray. “I’m actually G’wen, I thought she said my name.” He motioned for G’weld to take the tray of food. On his shoulder, bronze Dusk creeled desperately as he watched the food move away. “You’re in the same wing as me, aren’t you?” He thought he recognised the name, so similar to his own.
G'weld took the tray with a nod of thanks, though his gaze went to the firelizard on the other man's shoulder and he grinned. "I've been seeing those little creatures around. They're pretty charming. And... yes, My dragon's bronze Tarsenuth." He offered.
G’wen turned when his name was"this time"shouted by the cook and he took the much smaller tray of food off her. Dusk began to creel when he saw the pile of raw meat on one side of the tray. Out of nowhere blue Marli popped out, landing on G’wen’s other shoulder and tried to climb down his arm to get to the meat. G’wen tried to shift his shoulder and move the tray more to his other side, but then Dusk decided that Marli was going to get all the food before he could get any and squealed and tried to climb down the front of G’wen’s tunic. “They’re not as charming as they appear,” he muttered to G’weld and motioned to the nearest empty table. Sternly he disengaged Dusk’s talons off his tunic and put him on the table with a, “Sit! Don’t move!” And then managed to get Marli off him and"likewise"sitting beside Dusk.
"... Like I said. Charming." G'weld said, and grinned. "Though I suppose that's another way we can be told apart. You've got firelizards, and I've not."
"Also, they fancy anything other than meat, or that it? I _have_ been considering my luck at trying to find one."
“It depends.” G’wen pointed to Dusk. “He’s meat only, but this one…” He gently pushed Marli away from the bubbly pie on the edge of his tray. “He’ll eat anything and everything.” He gave the man a wary look, and asked, “You sure you want to inflict yourself with one of these crazy creatures?”
G'weld grinned, wide and easy, relaxed. "Oh _definitely_. At least at some point. I do think I should learn all I can about them first." He added. "Raush would definitely have something to say if I brought home an unexpected pet. But... They _are_ cute. Regular dragons in miniature."
“Without the personalities though,” G’wen said, giving Dusk an affectionate stroke. “Here, he’s less feral, give him some food.” He deposited his bronze onto G’weld’s arm and pushed the plate of raw meat closer to the man. “Don’t worry, he doesn’t bite, unlike this one.” He chucked Marli under the chin.
G'weld held still, willingly, when the bronze was placed onto his arm, then plucked up a bit of meat with his free hand. "Hey there, lil Dusk. Hungry, hmm?" He offered the food bite open-palmed.
Dusk daintily took the offered food off the man’s hand. When Marli saw his brother getting food but not him, he screeled loudly and attempted to swipe at Dusk. G’wen caught his claw before it could find its mark and shoved the bubbly pie under his nose. “I think I’d rather lose my dessert than cause a scene,” he told the man. With a happier squeal, Marli inhaled the pie. Beside G’weld, Dusk creeled, hoping for more food.
"Here you go." G'weld told Dusk, amused by the antics perhaps more than he should have been. He handed over another bit of meat, and then another, before his focus shifted back to G'wen. "I've heard that these can take messages. But are they able to learn tricks like a canine or feline?"
"Dusk can, and will from time to time. But this one," He pointed to the blue who was covered in flakes of pie crust and berries. "He's not_really_mine, he answers more to my green." Before G'weld could ask anything about that, he held up a warning hand. "Ask me later, or have your bronze ask my green. Let's not upset Marli." At the sound of his name, the blue sat up and looked at G'wen. "Here, have this." He shoved almost all of the meat off his dinner plate under Marli's nose.
"I wouldn't think of it." G'weld assured. "I'm in the business of making friends, not losing them, after all." he added. "Seems a shame you gotta give up your entire meal, though. ... Want some of my herdbeast?"
A pause, and he refocused on the other firelizard. "Yeah? What're some of the things he knows?"
G'wen gave him a small shake of his head. He'd tell him another time but it wasn't worth the pain it would bring to poor Marli. Instead he took a small portion of the other man's herdbeast. "Thank you, but Dusk seems to be eating most of your food too." He nodded to their drinks. "At least they haven't discovered our drinks yet!"
"There _is_ that!" G'weld chuckled and lifted his cup to G'wen. "To light meals and lots of drinking?"
“Indeed!”
