Sybana

Sybana

The laughter and shouting faded behind her as Sybana stepped away from the warmth and wildness of the party at the Starstones and began making her way down the path to the weyrbowl. At first, she’d been intrigued by the gathering -- curious to see what a Weyr party would be like -- but it quickly turned out to be more than she bargained for.

As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, Sybana noticed a petite figure a few paces ahead, carefully picking her way down the incline. One of the other candidate girls was leaving too! She felt a rush of relief to see she wasn't the only one who’d had enough and quickly lengthened her stride to catch up with Sylvian.

“Too much for you too?”

Sylvian turned to glance at the other girl. Ahh, one of the new ones…or at least newer than her. And so pretty. Sylvian felt her face flush a bit, looking at how perfect her curls were, unlike Sylvian’s wild mop of hair, and how the other girl was just a bit stronger looking in that way that made her more of a classic beauty.

“I don’t like some of those girls, particularly the Weyr ones. They’re jerks, think they know everything,” she muttered. These past two months had been hard, much harder than she thought it would be.

Sybana hadn't been expecting anything so frank from the other girl. She seemed so delicate, so ethereally pretty, Sybana assumed she'd be constrained by manners to match. She laughed, surprised and delighted by her boldness.

"They _are_ jerks," she agreed happily. "Nosarre especially. She bit my head off when I arrived, I hadn't even done anything."

"Are you from the holds, then?" The way she spoke about weyrgirls seemed to suggest that. "It's nice to meet another one of us. I'm Sybana."

“Yeah, she’s a right wherry, that one.” Sylvian slowed down to let the other girl fully catch up with her. A stray branch caught the edge of her skirt and she jerked it away, causing the lace to rip. “Ah well,” she muttered, even as Sybana let out a sympathetic murmur of dismay.

“I’m not Hold-bred, I’m from the Vintner Hall. I’m Sylvian, by the way.”

"Ah, well I'm glad to meet another person from outside the weyr at any rate," Sybana said with a warm smile. "The local girls have been so prickly. I suppose because we're competition for the gold egg -- and I _do_ intend to be competition -- but they don't have to be some mannerless about it."

“I suppose turns of being rejected by baby dragons takes it out of you maybe.” Sylvian smiled at Sybana. “But hey ho, I’m not really here for one of them anyways. I want to Craft.”

"Crafting, really?" It hadn't occurred to Sybana that any of the recent arrivals might dream of anything besides the gold egg. What could be better than that? She was instantly intrigued. "What craft? Why?"

Sylvian unconsciously puffed her chest up a bit as she said, “I’m here to be a Healer. I’ve always wanted to be one but my da only ever thought of vines and wines. So this was my chance…I just have to stomach all this candidate crap until the Hatching and then I can drop it and go apprentice to the Healer Craft and my family won’t know, they’ll just think I’m waiting for some silly gold egg.”

"Some silly egg?" Sybana echoed with an incredulous laugh. "If only more of the girls thought like you. I'd have less competition! Honestly though, that's very admirable. Healers are vital in the holds-- and weyrs. I hope it works out."

"Me too, hope the whole egg thing works out for you too!"
