“Hey, G’weld. Join me for a beer?” N’kevyn spotted his wingmate on the lake shore and headed over. “I think you deserve it. You and Tarsenuth flew well yesterday.” It had been a mostly uneventful Threadfall, but that didn’t make it any less dangerous. “And I’m not having any luck with my fishing either. I think the lake is too busy today.”
Part of that busy-ness was Avicath having a nice soak in the lake, having gone out just deep enough for the big bronze to be able to float there idly.
"Sure!" G'weld said by way of greeting, turning and giving N'kevyn an amiable grin. "Lead the way? And thanks-- though we always try to do our best."
A brief pause. "How's Avicath?"
N'kevyn nodded, heading in the direction of the dining hall, "I'll just have to drop my fishing gear off along the way, but it's not out of the way. Oh, Avi's fine. Sulking a little. I told him no green chasing today. You know how dramatic bronzes can be." Out behind him in the lake, the bronze gave a theatrical sigh. Which, considering his face was mostly under water, just resulted in bubbles. "I think that's why he's set on scaring away the fish."
"I sure do." G'weld chuckled. "I've seen it firsthand. And _felt_ it." He added. "Ah, no worries-- I'm good at the meander."
A pause. "You know-- if ever you're inclined, if you have a net and a dragon willing to chase fish, I imagine you could catch a good amount. Even if you just stand in the shallows."
"Alas. I could find a net I'm sure, but I lack the dragon willing to chase fish- other than by floating there ominously. I'm not sure Avicath has caught himself a single meal since we transferred here. He keeps telling the browns and bronzes that the way into Tymborikath's good graces is through her stomach, but she likes to hunt, so he's the one eating most the offerings." N'kevyn chuckled, "He's clever in his laziness, I guess."
G'weld winced, theatrically. "Ah... Well. My Tarsenuth might be one of the offenders on that front." He admitted. "He's convinced himself that nothing will please Tymborikath so much as the biggest, fattest herdbeast, dashed fresh to her door. Or, well, ledge."
He chuckled. "I'd wager I could get Tars to chase fish, if Zamyth wanted some. Or if he thought Tymborikath wanted some."
"Yeah, see. If Avicath wanted fish, he'd probably tell Tarsenuth that Tymborikath wanted fish. You should warn him he'd just be feeding Avicath. Probably. Tym might like fish, actually. But Avi definitely doesn't need it." The bronze was no longer maxing out his riding straps, but he still wasn't back down to the weight he was when they'd first transferred. N'kevyn led them towards his weyr to drop off the fishing pole. "How are you and Tarsenuth doing? I know you two were also transfers, but the loss of Riyanth was hard still, I'm sure."
G'weld paused a moment. "... Losing any dragon is hard." He admitted. "But, Faranth, the _Weyrwoman's_ gold.... I've been trying not to think about it."
He shook his head. "And I'll tell Tars to stop feeding Avicath then."
"It's a tragedy," N'kevyn agreed, "but everyone is rallying. Barrier Lake is tough," he said. "Anyway. Do you go fishing with Tarsenuth? Or is that just a hypothetical suggestion?"
"Ah, no-- no fishing. Purely a hypothetical." G'weld responded easily. "Can you imagine the _haul_ we could bring in, though? So _much_ fish...."
}:I'm not fishing.:{ Tarsenuth stated.
G'weld trailed off, then shook his head. "No, I go to the beaches mostly to look for firelizard eggs honestly."
N'kevyn whirled to look at him, "Have you found any good spots? We could compare notes. I have this firelizard call I brought last time. It... sort of worked."
"I mean. I've found a place where there were some dried bits of shell and kicked up sand." G'weld offered. "And one time Tarsenuth said he saw some firelizards diving in and out of the surf, but they betweened before we could get close enough. You want them from an egg anyway or there's no chance."
“Oh, of course,” N’kevyn said, “but I assume if I can find beaches that the firelizards seem to frequent, eventually I’ll find some eggs. Are you looking for yourself or?”
"Looking, if casually. The little creatures just seem so engaging." G'weld admitted. "Even Tarsenuth likes the idea of it."
"Aren't they, though?" N'kevyn's voice had an almost childish enthusiasm. "It's how our lovely acting Weyrwoman bribed me into coming south, you know. And still. No firelizard. It's been _months_."
"Well. I've heard sometimes a beastcrafter will have a clutch for sale, but I've not heard where they find them-- or just have a firelizard and know where it lays its eggs." G'weld responded. "And I wouldn't mind any color beast, not really, even if Tarsenuth thinks we should have a brown or blue. Faranth forbid he have _competition_." He rolls his eyes dramatically.
N'kevyn laughed, "Buying them is not as much fun. My daughter and I have been going out hunting for wild clutches. I have all the fun tools now. Don't much care what color I get, but whichever of us finds the clutch gets the biggest one. Thankfully, Avicath doesn't believe anything could compete with him, so he won't care either."
"That sounds like a fun way to split it." G'weld agreed amicably. "And oh? What sort of tools? All I've heard is you're supposed to bring a pot, to transport the eggs in." He added. "Truth be told, I don't much care what colour I wind up with either. It's Tarsenuth who's adamant it be a blue or something, silly beast. Perhaps I should steer him toward Avicath's line of thought."
"Well, a merchant highly recommended a rake for combing through the sand. It has a folding handle so it fits in a backpack. Very handy. And recently I found one selling a firelizard call... there's been uh, mixed results with that one. I got swarmed by some wild firelizards and wound up with stitches." N'kevyn shrugged, clearly unconcerned by his minor mauling. "Thankfully Avicath isn't much worried about a firelizard taking my attention. He's already had to share me with a weyrmate and two children; he's used to it."
"I've a weyrmate too, but dragons already take up most of our time and he's got his Craft too, so." G'weld just shrugged. "Besides, I fancy a nice firelizard. Little things can be useful too, carrying messages."
"Well, if you ever want to borrow my handy little kit for a firelizard hunt, just let me know," N'kevyn offered graciously. "Is your weyrmate interested in one as well? Is that why you're hoping to find a clutch?"
"Well to be honest, finding _one_ would be enough for me." G'weld laughed. "I've asked Raush about it, but he's got enough going on, with lovely Zamyth _and_ his Craft, that he's so far declined."
He shrugged. "I'll let you know, certainly. Or I could even offer a trade-- let me borrow the tools and I'll show you a likely spot or two that I've found."
"Oh, I'd appreciate that. I can share the spots we've found as well... although I was mildly mauled at the most promising one, so be wary. We'll have to compare notes over lunch," N'kevyn's excitement about his firelizard hunting was almost childlike.
"Definitely." G'weld chuckled.
