Description: Teigan arrives at Barrier Lake
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 4, day 27 of Turn 12
The air above Barrier Lake was certainly different than what they had left behind at Windswept. However, Teigan was grateful that it also wasn't as dry and cold as what he'd grown up in at Dragonsfall.
There was a bit of a disappointed tug in the pit of the healer's stomach. The place looked like a mud splatter set beside a lake. It certainly wasn't as beautiful as Windswept or Jade Harbor had been, and it lacked any truly distinguishing geographical features.
His arms tightened around his weyrmate's waist as her dragon took them in for a landing. Teigan inhaled deeply and pushed down his feelings. Thiseta was excited about this new posting and he wanted to be as well.
"Imbeth, a smooth ride as always," Teigan said, rubbing the gold's flank once his feet touched the ground.
The gold dragon turned her massive head and blew a puff of air at him to ruffle his hair.
"That means 'you're welcome'," Thiseta said as she landed on the ledge beside her weyrmate. She smiled impishly and gestured toward the weyrlake. "I know it's not Windswept Islands, but it's beautiful in its own way. I like the way the green of the trees is darker, and the colour of the lake. I'm glad that it's big enough for ships."
Teigan took the back of her hand and kissed it. "It will be nice sipping klah in the morning and watching the ships come in. I mean, you know, when we _have_ a free morning." Those were rare for the both of them.
"Come look at the weyr." She tugged him toward the entrance, where she stopped to exclaim again over the windows. "My plants will be so happy with the light that we get here. And I know that with any luck this will be a temporary weyr for us, but..." she gestured at their spacious new weyr, with its light plaster walls and electric lights. "It's so-- new!"
Her excitement brought a truly genuine smile out of the big healer. "It _is_ beautiful in here," he agreed. "And, this is the first time I've ever lived in something _new_." Dragonsfall had been old, _old_ and Jade Harbor, as well. "Speaking of your plants, did they survive the trip?"
Thiseta made a face. "I think I lost about half... we'll see over the next few sevendays. I'm trying not to think about it or I'll cry." She gestured to a table by the window covered in drooping greenery. "I'm glad that I found homes at Windswept Island for the rest of them. But look at that!" She pointed to a far wall dominated by empty shelves. "I thought that would be a perfect spot for your books. Don't you think?"
Teigan could feel how badly Thiseta wanted him to feel happy about Barrier Lake and their new weyr. "They look perfect," he said, pressing a kiss to her temple. "As you know, they'll be the first thing I unpack." His medical books were his most prized possessions and had been acquired slowly and through great expense over the Turns.
He was trying for her, and she loved him for it. "Let me know if I can help. I know you _love_ it when I help."
"Yes, I especially love when you organize my books by color rather than title." He batted his eyelashes at her.
She stuck her lips out in a pout. "It makes better sense. And I need _something_ to do while I wait for Imbeth to rise and that flit egg to hatch." She gestured toward the pot of sand near the fireplace.
Teigan rubbed at the beard on his chin. "You know, I could think of _better_ things to do while you wait for Imbeth to rise and that egg to hatch."
Thiseta arched her eyebrows, her mind already slipping in directions that had nothing to do with books. "Oh?"
The master healer's eyes sparkled with mischief as he leaned in close to his weyrmate's ear. "We can try _every_ dessert Barrier Lake has to offer."
"You--!" She smacked him on the arm, then reconsidered. She really liked desserts, and it was exciting to have a new kitchen's offerings to explore. New fruits from different tithes, new tastes and dishes-- it felt good to be exploring again. As much as she'd loved Windswept Islands Weyr, the place felt... stale. It held too many bad memories. "All right. But we need to decide on how we are judging the desserts, because _obviously_ we need to know which one is best."
"There should be a visual scoring," Teigan said, holding up one finger, "and then of course, a sweetness rating."
"And a score for texture. I can't stand a mushy pie. Hang on, I think I know where I packed a notebook..." Thiseta hurried toward a pile of bags on the table, grateful all over again that Teigan had agreed to this move. They'd have fun. They'd make it work here, no matter the outcome of the next goldflight. And if she told herself that enough, it would come true. It _had_ to. "Ah ha! Found it." She pulled a notebook and pencil from one of the bags. "All right, just let me write that down..."
