R'fayne

Skadith made himself a comfortable enough spot in the cool quiet shadows of Barrier Lake’s courtyard, his indifference over where he dozed having been made known in his typical curt fashion. Barely over a murmur, although his rider was wearing a smile better suited to winning an argument.

They still had a few more hours. A few more hours as free agents, untethered to duties, and set loose on another Weyr. There were worse deals for worse prices. At this point it was starting to reach into the realm of sloppy for the more enthusiastic guests. Some of them R’fayne got to know, filing away names and faces and personal details, sharing flasks and anecdotes. Cirina had ditched them, of course, and who would blame her. It wasn’t her illuminated face he sought anyway, or who he lingered on once he found it again. R’fayne was sure the brownrider could feel his gaze on him, a steady, aching pressure.

The fireheat paled in comparison to the heat in his veins whenever the other man was near.

Or maybe it was his face when R'fayne came just close enough, pressing into him in a brief recreation of the two of them a few hours prior. In the dark of O’rosin’s weyr, the warmth of his bed. His lips brushed near his ear, “Are my eyes playing tricks, or are you enjoying yourself?”

O’rosin didn’t startle, but there was a sharpness to his inhale, a shift in the way his shoulders set as R’fayne’s breath skimmed his ear. It wasn’t unwelcome, just unexpected. He still wasn't used to public displays of affection as a whole, let alone with a man, and wholly despite the fact that the two of them were sleeping over a couple times a sevenday. He felt his face heat, even as his hands instinctively went to R'fayne's hips, keeping him close. "Could say the same for you." He replied, "Thanks for coming. Cirina's friends are nice, but it's easier when I'm not third-wheeling. Especially since she's been smitten with that bronzerider the entire time."

R’fayne flashed a merciful smile given how bright O’rosin’s face had flushed. “I’m glad I came, actually. It’s almost as wild as some Dolphin Cove parties.” The tension in the other man’s frame had a hand snaking to the back of the brownrider’s neck, brushing flight jacket and shirt collars and shaggy sun-bleached hair all in quick succession. Held loosely, looking to reassure. He wasn’t sure of what, not really, but of all places, a crowded bonfire at a Weyr where no one would remember them was as close to being invisible as they could get. He found his heart striking against his chest that he was feeling reassured by this on some level, too. It was like most things between them; it was between them.

The air crackled with embers. Around them, conversation shifted to other things, talk of Kapera, moments from the last Threadfall, the elaborate pranks in the barracks. R’fayne’s dark eyes were on O’rosin’s. “It's getting kind of crowded on this side. I’m considering grabbing another drink.”

O’rosin’s fingers flexed at R’fayne’s hips, a hesitation he covered with a slow breath. His grip was firm, grounding, and for a moment, it seemed like he might say something"some half-hearted protest, some attempt at playing this off. But he didn’t. Instead, he let his hands drop, though not before letting his knuckles skim deliberately along R’fayne’s waist. "Are you going to be able to get to 'drills? It's just a few candlemarks before we have to be in formation."

“Think I’m a lightweight?” R’fayne arched a brow. “You almost sound worried about me.” The first time he’d insinuated concern coming from the brownrider’s direction was before they even had dragons to ride, albeit facetiously, and more in an attempt to deflect uncomfortable truths and a lingering stare from someone he didn't know, nor was sure he particularly liked.

That was not how he said it now.

That wasn’t how he was looking at him now, darkeyed in the flashing firelight. Not when O’rosin’s touch that low on his body had a mix of heat and anticipation searing up into his throat. R’fayne had half a mind to drag those hands back, but his own grip had already shifted, mimicking his gaze. The bluerider’s palm slid down O’rosin’s solid chest, as much to tease as to appreciate, and absorbing the pulse of the brownrider’s heat and his heart there, R’fayne felt the intense urge to fist the fabric and pull him into him. Show him this wasn’t all that different from the seclusion of his weyr.

Then he let go, and it was his turn to feel his face burn. “I'm fine.” R’fayne replied, though perhaps O’rosin had a point - then and now. “I think I’ll stretch my legs anyway. Get some air.” He took a half step away from the glow of the fire and gauzy veil of smoke, “Unless, there’s something else you’d rather do?”

It did, at least, make O'rosin feel a little better that R'fayne's flushed face likely matched his own. Finally understanding the line of questioning, he shook his head. "Didn't you get enough earlier?" He teased, even as he followed R'fayne in that half-step. Keeping him close, and raising a hand to entwine their fingers together. "Let's go. Not too far, I won't know how to get back."

“Don’t worry.” R’fayne purred, the confidence in his voice both a command and a promise. “I'll watch out for you.”
