The request came via Cyan Wing: that K'mai was to meet with the Dragonsfall Weyr Headwoman directly after drills were over for the day. When he knocked, Oselle was finishing a comparison between an inventory of delivered goods from one of the farms and the tithe request that had been sent in. She made a mark, then set her pen aside and closed her ledger. "Wingrider K'mai. Thank you for meeting with me."
"Of course, Headwoman." K'mai stepped in, running over the things he might possibly be in trouble for.
"I hear birthingday congratulations are in order," she said dryly.
"Oh yes. I had a _wonderful_ time." He smiled even as he started narrowing down the list. "Sorry I didn't invite you, but I think that would have been awkward for both of us."
She arched an eyebrow. "I think your guest list was already entirely too long already, since you decided to steal furniture from empty weyrs."
"_Borrowed_," he emphasized. "We brought everything back. Well, except that one couch, but that really needs to be cleaned first."
Her nose wrinkled slightly in disgust. "No, it needs to be reupholstered. The cost of the materials for that work will be coming from you," Oselle told him. She picked up a hide on her desk to refresh her memory. "As for the rest... your effort at reparations were lackluster at best, Wingrider. My staff had to spend several candlemarks cleaning and moving furniture back to their proper places. An empty weyr isn't your personal storage closet. I would have thought you had learned that lesson as a weyrling."
"I'm paying, don't worry." K'mai held his hands up. "Sorry for the extra work. Some of my friends might have rushed trying to get things back before anyone noticed. So, uh, failure on that part I guess."
Oselle tapped her finger on her desk. "And?"
"And I should ask next time?"
"Yes, you should. And what else, Wingrider?"
K'mai rubbed the back of his head. "And I'm sorry?"
The Headwoman felt like she was talking to a weyrbrat who had stolen a cookie, not a grown dragonrider. She suppressed a sigh. "My job here at the Weyr is to ensure that the dragonriders are cared for so that they can fly. I take my duties seriously, Wingrider. My staff is here to support you, but I will not permit you to take advantage of their time and labour for your own pleasures. Do you understand?"
"Yes, Headwoman." That seemed to be the safest response. K'mai didn't think trying to charm her was going to work.
Oselle didn't think he looked contrite at all, but there was only so much that she could do. "This is your warning, Wingrider. Let's not meet like this again, shall we?"
K'mai nodded. "I would very much like to avoid that." He missed Yanley, the previous Headwoman. K'mai had been able to charm _her_, at least most of the time. Oselle was just so serious all the time. He was tempted to ask her if she ever had fun, or even knew what the word meant, but that was sure to get him in even more trouble.
"As would I." The Headwoman regarded him a moment longer, then turned her attention back to the hides on her desk. "You are dismissed. I hope you have a... pleasant rest of your evening."
