"Not my fault the bread didn't rise right," Gorrel was saying as he trudged along the path. It was a warm day for autumn, but he was a River Bluff transfer and he was almost comically bundled. "The fire was too hot."
"Yeah, sure, blame the ovens." Yadra shot back..
Gorrel opened his mouth to argue, but before he could, Yadra threw an arm across his chest, stopping him
in his tracks.
He didn't know how he missed that Galgiath was crossing their path. She trudged along with all the grace of a trundlebug and the power of a landslide, and barely spared them a glance. She passed so close that Gorrel could have reached out a hand to touch her hide.
Only once she had moved on did Yadra lower her arm.
"Nearly walked right in front of her," she muttered. "You’d have been trampled flatter than your arse."
"Not my fault," Gorrel said, exhaling sharply. There were more than Galgaith. Half the clutch seemed to be
following along on her adventure. "Who expects weyrlings to be out wandering in this cold? Where are their riders?"
"In class, probably," Yadra said. "Not a lot for dragons to do when their riders are learning their drills. "They're getting bold, aren't they? Look at Galgaith, thinks she's in charge already."
"She _is_ in charge. Do you see that blue? His gait is more like a tunnelsnake."
"I love him." Yadra said immediately and fondly. "He's the one that Impressed the girl this time. Sweet boy."
Gorrel laughed and pointed at one of the bronzes thundering past, all puffed up and preening. "That's the bronze that Impressed Wingleader R'enh's son, isn't it? Trying to impress the girl already, huh?" Yadra covered her mouth to hide the giggles, but it did nothing to muffle the sound.
The delight of Adamanth's antics distracted them enough that they didn't see the other bronze barreling towards them until it was too late. Yadra shrieked, Gorrel froze. For a brief, terrifying second, it looked like the weyrling was going to crash right into them. His limbs flailed awkwardly as he skidded to a halt barely a hair's breadth from them. He stumbled a half-step back instead, then extended his neck to nudge Yadra gently with his nose as if to ask 'You Good?'
Yadra patted the nose and scritched it, though her laughter was a mix of relief and lingering fear. "Careful, buddy." She told the bronze, who nodded agreeably before surging forward to chase the group. "Maybe we should get further away."
"Don't have to tell me twice." The pair retreated several paces back. From a distance, they enjoyed Respellath chasing another green's tail until she eventually lost interest, and speculated what determined thoughts the waddling brown was thinking. The procession ended with a blue racing after the pack, with a brown carefully keeping pace with the stragglers.
With the dragonets finally passed, Yadra turned to Gorrel and grinned. "Do you think Oselle will believe that we're late because the weyrlings were waddling?"
Gorrel gave her a flat look. "Not a chance."
Somewhere behind them, the dragonets flew.
