E'kavas barely had time to register the blur of motion before Kevia was off like a dart, heading straight for the stairs.
"Uh-uh." he said, catching her by the back of her tunic before she could get too far. "Where do you think you're going? It's almost dinner time."
Kevia twisted to look up at him, her small face glowing with excitement. "Hanassath is up there!" she announced as if that explained everything.
E'kavas blinked. "And?"
Kevia gave him an exasperated look, as if he was the child in this conversation and she was not, in fact, just turned nine. "That means Uncle T'gyrlan is up there. And Zariah. And that means…" She stretched out the word dramatically, "They're on a _date_."
E'kavas sighed. "Kevia…"
"I have to check on them." she continued, completely ignoring the warning in his voice. "What if they're just sitting up there being awkward? What if T'gyrlan's just doing push-ups? Or if Zariah gets nervous and starts talking about _knitting_."
"Zariah crochets."
"Whatever, it's _boring_."
E'kavas pinched the bridge of his nose. "You are not checking on their date."
Kevia's brows scrunched in an unintentional mockery of her father's. "Why not?"
"Because it's their date, not yours."
"But what if…"
"No."
Kevia huffed, crossing her arms. "This is a mistake," She declared as she flopped dramatically onto the couch. "A huge mistake. You'll see. They'll be sitting up there, all awkward and weird, and nothing will happen, and it'll be _your_ fault."
"I will take my chances." E'kavas said mildly. "I don't know either of them to sit in silence. They don't need a nine-turn-old supervising."
Kevia sighed loudly. "Fine. But if this doesn't work, next time I'm helping."
E'kavas just shook his head. "Next time, Hanassath is going to be sneakier." How she even knew Hanassath was up there was a mystery. She couldn't see out into the weyrbowl. He'd have to tell T'gyrlan that Hanassath was still landing too hard. He waited a beat, making sure Kevia wasn't about to bolt for the door the moment he turned his back. She huffed again for good measure but stayed put, kicking her feet up against the cushions in frustration.
He exhaled, relieved.
"Hanassath," Kevia suddenly said, tilting her head like she was listening. "Did you hear that?"
E'kavas frowned. "Kevia…"
She turned wide, innocent eyes to him. "I think he sighed. It sounded like a bored sigh." She sat up and scooted forward in her seat, poised to bolt again. "Maybe I should just…"
E'kavas held out a hand, stopping her before she could make a move. "You are not using Hanassath as an excuse to go eavesdrop."
Kevia pouted. "But what if he's suffering?"
"All bronzes would lead you to believe they're suffering." E'kavas said flatly. "Hanassath especially."
"Maybe Relsath is suffering in his company."
"Nice try."
Kevia slumped back against the couch again, crossing her arms. "I don't get it. I'd want someone to help if I were on a date."
E'kavas chuckled. "No, you wouldn't."
"Yes, I would!" Kevia insisted. Then, she paused. "Well. Maybe not. I definitely wouldn't want _you_ to help."
"You don't want me to pack a little picnic for you?" E'kavas teased.
"No!" Kevia exclaimed. "Ugh, this is _agony_."
E'kavas reached across to ruffle her hair. "My condolences. You still aren't going up there."
"UGH."
