There had been chaos in the classroom.
A quiet tutorial on leatherworking erupted into argument when, outside, weyrlings flew and fell. Dragonets were hurt, accusations were thrown. Zaphare, hearing her blue’s malleable version of the truth, thought her lifemate had been pushed. It had taken some time for everyone to sort through the jumble of draconic explanations and find the truth-- that Galgaith had led her clutchmates off in an ambitious and ill judged bid to _fly_.
Now Sybana was trying to make amends.
She had waited a little for things to calm down, and for all the dragonets to be seen to by healers, but on the second night she took Galgaith down the halls of the barracks to visit the clutchmates injured by her ambition.
Sanvi and Respellath were next. The weyrbred girl didn’t give Sybana as much pause as Nosarre, but it wasn’t like they were close. In truth, she didn’t know any of her classmates that well, except perhaps Zaphare. Sybana hadn’t been at the weyr long before Impressing, and then things had been a blur of Galgaith for a while.
She just hoped Sanvi wouldn’t bite her head off.
“Sanvi?” she knocked lightly on the door to the greenrider’s alcove. “Do you have a moment? I brought a salve for Respellath-- and Galgaith has something to say.”
Sanvi looked up from where she'd been reading in her cot beside Respellath's wallow. Her dragon lifted her head at the same time. "Uh, sure." The weyrling swung her legs down from the cot and stood, stretching.
}:Hi Galgaith!:{ Respellath said brightly.
Galgaith bounded into the room. }:Hello, hello! Are you feeling better yet? I--:{ A meaningful mental nudge from Sybana made the young gold pause and, after the thought, square her shoulders to announce grandly: }:I'm sorry I led you into danger. I'm glad you're not dead. I will be more careful next time.:{
Monitoring her dragon's side of the conversation, Sybana was relatively satisfied with this round of apology. It had taken a while to persuade the gold that anything was her fault in the first place. Galgaith had been convinced that her siblings should have just been stronger, that they let _her_ down. It had taken a bit of explaining for Sybana to impress upon her that leadership--true leadership--meant being mindful of others, and that a leader wasn’t measured only by their strength and ambition, but by their ability to guide, to protect.
Sybana wasn't sure the lesson would stick, the gold seemed to already have an innate idea of power and leadership that was much more rudimentary, but hopefully it would last long enough to smooth things over with their classmates.
Leaving the dragons to it, Sybana stepped over to Sanvi, offering her a small jar and an apologetic smile. "Here. I expect the healers already gave you what you need, but I asked them this morning if there was anything else we could do, and they gave me a few of these... it's supposed to be a pleasant hot-cold sensation, to help take their mind off any discomfort. That, or I've been fleeced," she laughed lightly.
The older girl unscrewed the cap and sniffed the salve, then made a face. "You _paid_ for this?"
"Three eighths for a dozen jars," Sybana shrugged as if the money hardly mattered. "It seemed reasonable. The healers had already done everything they thought necessary, and they're busy setting up for threadfall tomorrow. Why, does it smell off?"
"I forgot you were Blood." The greenrider shook her head as she screwed the cap back on the jar. "Thanks. Hopefully Respellath will let me use it. I'll give what she doesn't use back to you."
Sybana hesitated a moment at Sanvi's words, caught off guard by the casual remark. 'I forgot you were blood.' It wasn't an accusation exactly, but it still left her feeling slightly self conscious. Had she overpaid? Should she have bartered... something else?
"Keep it," she said, nodding at the jar. "If she likes it at all. It's the least we can do... how is she anyway?"
"She'll be fine. Right proud of herself, too." Sanvi flopped back onto the cot and slipped the jar under her pillow. "Galgaith didn't do anything wrong, really. They make up their own minds about things."
}:I _flew_,:{ Respellath said firmly, even though she'd clearly nosedived off the cliff and had the scrapes to show for it. She turned her adoring eyes toward the gold dragonet. }:I am just like you!:{
}:You are much smaller,:{ said Galgaith, ever practical, though she nuzzled the green approvingly. }:But you are brave and bold, just like me. We flew and we will fly again, as soon as everyone is strong enough!:{ She was confident they all flew at this point, that was what the fuss was about, right?
The little green just about melted into a puddle at the attention. }:When I learn to fly I am never going to walk again.:{
"You're certainly taking this better than Nosarre," Sybana observed with a wry smile. "I told her they were just babies and bound to get up to some trouble, but she seemed to think it's something that needs to be stamped out immediately."
Sanvi snorted a laugh. "Yeah, well. That's Nosarre for you."
"So I'm learning." At least Sanvi didn't seem that bothered by Galgaith's mischief. That was a relief.
They should be on their way, there were other classmates to visit, but the dragonets seemed to be enjoying each other's company. Galgaith had shoved up besides Respellath's wallow to enthuse about all the flying they would do. }:And when we can fly, we can _hunt_ too. It will be delicious!:{
Sybana searched for something more to say and her gaze fell on the book open on Sanvi's cot. "I didn't mean to interrupt," she said, nodding towards it. "What were you reading?"
"Garbage. It's a Holder romance that someone left in the Dining Caverns." Sanvi shrugged. "It's better than studying, though. If I have to memorize one more map I think I am going to light the barracks on fire."
"A romance?" Sybana echoed, clearly intrigued despite the lackluster review. "I was never allowed to read those growing up. I think they thought it'd give us the wrong ideas about marriage."
Well. Her father wasn't here to disapprove, nor was the matron of Opal Cove, and it wasn't like she was going to wed anymore...
"Can I borrow it after you're done?"
"It's all yours. But if you _really_ want to get corrupted let me know and I can hook you up with something that'll really make your toes curl," Sanvi said with a wink.
"There's something worse?"
Sanvi's grin grew wider. "I never said worse."
There was a long moment as Sybana weighed her options-- but she wasn't one for half measures. She met Sanvi's grin with a smile of her own, bright and beautiful. "I'll take you up on that then. I'd like to see what the fuss is about, and besides-- I'm supposed to be a weyrgirl now. I could use some corrupting."
"I'll keep that in mind. And I'll let you know when I'm done the book," Sanvi said, even as she thought, **You have no idea what you just agreed to...**
