The Weyrwoman’s dismissal stung more than he wanted to admit. And with Tsaera standing there! Why hadn’t she advocated for him to remain? He had no answer to that so A’len slowly paced just beyond the office while he waited for word of what was happening.
**Where is that blasted boy? Why isn’t he at that meeting?** he demanded of Tirenth.
There was a long silence before his bronze responded with, }: Aluneth won’t speak with me. But he is not in the Weyr. :{
**Obviously,** A’len snapped. What could _possibly_ drag I’serin away from the Weyr if the Weyrwoman was calling a meeting of the Wingleaders? There was trouble brewing, he could feel it, but without being _at_ that meeting -- it was infuriating!
}: Patience, :{ Tirenth advised him. }: Isaoth’s rider will tell us everything soon enough. :{ With nothing to do but wait, A’len used his pacing to reign in his temper.
He all but pounced S’lahr when the Wingleader came into view. “What did she say?”
“There is a cave system that is flooding. A large group of Holdless have sheltered there and are in trouble. We’re to go assist,” S’lahr reported. His long legs were already taking him to the Weyrbowl. A’len matched his stride.
“So? They’re Holdless. How does that concern us?” A’len asked.
“They are people in trouble.”
The honor that usually bound a dragonrider stirred within A’len but emotions got the better of his response. “_Barely_ people. They’ve all been kicked out of Holds for their crimes. We’re risking dragonriders for criminals? For murderers? That’s absurd!”
S’lahr whirled on A’len with a glowering look. “Do _you_ want to disobey a direct order from the Weyrwoman? Be my guest.” The Wingleader strode off before A’len could respond.
The older bronzerider stared at that retreating back for a long while, thinking. That _had_ to be where I’serin was -- helping Holdless. He got that bleeding heart mentality from his healer mother. But S’lahr was right. No dragonrider was going to disobey the Weyrwoman. And A’len wasn’t going to be caught being a public dissenter. That would ruin his chances at a promotion for sure.
**Let’s go,** A’len said to Tirenth.
}: But we haven’t been asked to go, :{ Tirenth pointed out.
**So? It doesn’t matter. If someone asks, we can say I’serin called for us personally. I’m not going to sit here in the Weyr while everyone plays heroics. I’m going to be seen there somehow.** Even if it stung him to be helping criminals.
}: I will not lie to the queen, :{ Tirenth grumbled as he crouched for A’len to mount.
**Fine. I will. Just take us to wherever the rest of the Weyr is going. I swear if this boy gets one of our number killed by Holdless…**
Tirenth said nothing as they followed the gathered rescue riders /between/.
