The warmth of the ovens felt like a blast after the cold of the weyrbowl after outdoor practice. E'kirim stomped the snow from his boots before he went any further, looking for the Headwoman's office. He'd tried to avoid it as much as he could since Oselle took over, and he'd been working in the gardens by then anyway, but he found her office eventually.
"Headwoman? Do you have a moment?"
The Headwoman looked up from her desk, where she’d been transcribing careful notes in a large ledger. “How can I help you, E’kirim?” That particular weyrling was too large to forget.
"Well, ma'am, the weyrlings got their weyr assignments a few days ago. It's not a ground weyr, but it has Lower Caverns access since we aren't flying solo yet. I don't need all that space to myself. My Ma and my four siblings were pretty crowded together at Amber Hills. Anyway, um, T'lonas says the starsmiths say there's a big storm coming, and I'm worried about the folks out in the tents. Surely a family or a small group would be safer and warmer in a weyr. My brother has a weyr and he also doesn't need all that space. Norrianth is still so small I'm sure he and Remiath could make due until there's space again."
“Well.” Oselle set her pen aside. “That is very kind of you, E’kirim. I am worried that we have plucked our guests from one flood just to subject them to another. However if you give up your weyr, there is no guarantee that you’ll get it, or another weyr, back again any time in the near future.”
"That's fine. I figure either they'll move on when it's warmer or we'll find space for them in the caverns if they decide to stay. Or there'll be a weyr vacancy eventually- oh!" E'kirim eyes widened and he covered his mouth. Thoughts didn't often happen unless they were out loud, and his mind hadn't fully registered what he was saying until it was too late. "I mean I'm fine with staying a while with K'aur. I'd rather that than anyone freeze to death outside."
The Headwoman smiled. “You’re very kind. Not many are willing to give up their weyrs for strangers. Well. You will need to pack everything up, and I’ll have someone move a bed into your brother’s weyr for you. Or did you want the bed and mattress that you have now?”
"Thanks, ma'am, but I'm just doing what I can." E'kirim said. He hadn't thought about the logistics of it. He just figured he could roll up to K'aur's weyr and bully him into giving up half his bed. "I've just been there a few days, I can pack things up really quickly. Any bed is fine, if we have anything extra tucked away somewhere. I dunno how it all works, really."
**Clearly.** Oselle kept the thought to herself. “I can take care of that for you. Let me know when you are packed and leave your bags on the bed, we can move you into your brother’s weyr by the time that you are finished with lessons for the day.”
E'kirim tried to do the math in his head. If he moved quick, he could probably make it out of lessons before K'aur made it back from sweeps and saw the rearranged weyr. "That'd be great. I can get it all ready in about a candlemark." He'd just be a little late getting back to class.
That was suspiciously quick" but getting another group of Holdless out of the mud and behind stone walls was too tempting to pass up. Leaving anyone so exposed to the elements was anathema, even if they were Holdless. The Headwoman’s mind was already miles away as she mentally reassigned staff to clean and refurnish the weyrling’s weyr. “Just let me know when you’re ready,” she said. “And on behalf of all of us, thank you for your sacrifice.”
