:Tymborikath says that the little eggs are about to hatch,:{ Imbeth's mindvoice rumbled through Thiseta's mind, warm as sunshine and tinged with excitement.
The egg. **The egg!** She straightened up from where she knelt in the kitchen garden, dirty fingers twined with weeds and fingerroot fronds. Her knees ached as she knocked mud from her boots but her heart soared with anticipation.
Teigan should be there to watch, but Teigan was in the Infirmary. Thiseta grimaced as she hurried toward the Kitchens for a bowl of scraps. She should go and fetch him on her way, except she _hated_ the Infirmary.
Instead she abused her rank and stopped a drudge to pass the message along to Teigan. Then she rushed back to her weyr, a bowl of meat in one hand and her heart pounding in her chest as she went to check the egg.
The egg was still intact. Mostly. Small cracks had formed along its mottled sides but its occupant still hid inside. Thiseta breathed a sigh of relief as she picked up the pot.
}:I want to see!:{ Imbeth demanded.
**I'm coming!** Hopefully her weyrmate would know to follow her out onto the ledge.
“Thiseta?” His voice echoed through the weyr behind her as he searched for her. Teigan appeared out on the ledge, his furrowed brow smoothing as he caught sight of his weyrmate. “It’s finally happening?” He was still wearing his healer’s tunic, stethoscope hanging around his neck.
She nodded, her eyes fixed on the egg. It had started to rock. She sat on Imbeth's foot as the gold watched curiously, a faint hum echoing deep in her throat. "Quick-- guess a colour! I can't see anything yet, it could be anything."
Teigan quickly glanced around, saw his trouser color and said, “Uh, brown!”
"I'm thinking blue..." the goldrider trailed off as one of the cracks got a bit wider. She could just about see the little body curled within. "I still am shocked that Aydhan was kind enough to give me an egg. She really didn't have to."
"I haven't met her yet. I suppose I will soon." Teigan had heard the other goldrider was a healer, too. He expected he would see her in the infirmary at some point.
"You'll like her. I-- oh!" Thiseta grabbed for the meat bowl as the cracks widened and a hint of hide-- green hide!-- was revealed. A moment later the flit flexed its wings and came sprawling from its shell, already creeling. Thiseta held a tiny strip of meat in front of its nose and willed it to take it from her. **Come on, come on!**
The little green opened her tiny jaws and snapped the morsel from her fingers, nearly taking her finger with it. Thiseta yelped as she drew back, a small bead of blood blooming on her fingertip as she reached for another scrap. "She bit me!"
"You _were_ dangling meat in front of her," Teigan reasoned with an amused grin. The tiny creature was intriguing. He'd seen firelizards before, of course, but never _up close_. At the risk of being eaten by a dragon, the healer found the firelizard to be much more beautiful than their larger cousin. There was something intricate in their tiny physiques that made them infinitely more elegant, he thought.
"They're not supposed to _bite_--" Thiseta snatched her fingers away as the little green snapped at the second bit of meat that she held out and creeled piteously for more. And then it happened-- a small, strange tendril of awareness snaked its way through Thiseta's mind. Both she and Imbeth startled. "I can feel her," the goldrider breathed.
~~Hunger hunger bright hunger~~
Thiseta held out another bit of meat carefully by her fingertips. "I Impressed her. She's mine! Teigan, I did it!"
Teigan couldn't help his smile at the wonder and happiness on Thiseta's face. He loved seeing her happy. "She's beautiful," he said in congratulations.
"Isn't she? Oh Faranth, I'll have to think up a name..." The goldrider winced at the flit's jaws snapped perilously close to her fingertips. "I'll have to tell Aydhan what happened. What a wonderful way to get settled into a new weyr, don't you think?"
"It's a wonderful gift," he agreed. He only hoped the women continued to get along after one of their golds rose and made one of them the Senior Weyrwoman. He wasn't sure how it worked between goldriders, but he'd lived at Jade Harbor long enough to see how nasty things got between women competing to be the next Lady of a Hold someday.
}:I want a flit,:{ Imbeth chimed in. }:They like me more than you anyway.:{
**Oh, let me have something nice to myself!** Thiseta told her gold dragon.
}:You have your weyrmate,:{ Imbeth said primly. }:So I want a flit.:{
"Imbeth wants a flit too," Thiseta said to Teigan. "If she gets a pet, then you'll need one as well to complete the set. Another flit? Or perhaps you'd prefer a canine or a feline?"
Teigan titled his head, pondering. “I’m not sure. Canines can useful with certain therapies, which means I could take one to work but then, firelizards can also be helpful. I’ll think on it.” He leaned in and pressed a kiss to her temple. “Congratulations on your new beauty. I’d better get back to the infirmary.”
She leaned into his touch. "I'm glad you were here for it."
