Description: I'serin comes up on unsettling scene
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 5, day 5 of Turn 12
Notes: Mentioned K'mai, M'kayre
Aluneth’s voice kept I’serin grounded as he worked. The bronze dragon reported every detail that was relayed to him back to his rider, who was working side by side with others to get rescues out. }: Sebeth and K’mai are here, :{ Aluneth reported. Despite the dire circumstances, I’serin’s heart skipped an oddly happy beat. He mentally shoved aside the emotion. He needed to concentrate on saving these people.
}: Tirenth is here, :{ Aluneth growled.
As much as I’serin wanted to keep his meddling father on a short leash, he also did not want his father taking charge of the situation and blowing it out of proportion. Surely M’kayre would direct himself somewhere useful.
I’serin was not certain how much more time had passed since that statement but at one point, Aluneth’s stream of reporting changed to, }: You are shivering. You need to stop. :{ Sure enough, the young Weyrleader looked down at his shaking hands, with cuticles turning white and blue. He needed to get warm.
“Assist them in getting that rope across,” he said to the nearest rider as he moved towards the exit of the cave. Blessedly, someone had erected some shelters and begun weak but welcomed fires under them. I’serin headed there to warm up. Someone pressed a mug of klah into his hands and he stammered out his gratitude. As he took a brief respite, Aluneth continued his litany of reports. }: I am keeping an extra ear on Sebeth and K’mai for you, :{ the dragon said. A ghost of an appreciative smile crossed I’serin’s face.
In hindsight, I’serin would have no idea why that particular scream drew his attention with so much going on around him but it did. Perhaps because there was a desperation to it that should not have been there. Drawn like a magnet, he went to investigate, scowling as he discovered his own father involved in whatever was occurring.
“We had to dose her, Weyrleader sir,” the healer reported. He was trying to calm a younger woman who was sobbing nearby. “She was fighting everyone. Didn’t want to go with us. We can’t take her to the Weyr like that. Can’t leave her here either.”
I’serin did not reply. He instead stared at A’len, who had just risen from using his weight to restrain the young woman while the fellis took hold. Something about the situation felt…off. There was something in A’len’s posture that spoke of malice, something in the way he looked at the unconscious woman that told an important story. Though he did not like the idea of dosing anyone, of forcing them to come with the riders, a nagging feeling of wrongness was not enough proof to intervene and sometimes he had to trust others to make the right call.
A’len, for his part, brushed himself off and acted like nothing was amiss. “Feisty little thieves,” he remarked with a joviality that was misplaced for the situation. He spotted I’serin and grinned toothily. “Ah, there you are! I was wondering when you’d arrive to help. The Weyr’s out here working and you’re hiding!”
I’serin did not like the lighthearted tone his father was using. It was sweet-coated, the kind he used to underhandedly humiliate someone else. His eyes flickered to A’len, then to the unconscious woman, then back to A’len. “I trust in your decision,” he finally said, turning his gaze to the healer. “Be gentle with her though. Today has been catastrophic for many.” The healer nodded.
A’len started to say. “Tirenth is nearest. I’ll take her-”
“You will not,” I’serin interrupted sharply.
Something dangerous crossed his father’s face as I’serin returned his gaze to A’len. Something I’serin would decipher later. He kept the steel in his tone as he said, “Return to your Wingleader and assist him.” Then, to Aluneth, **Inform his Wingleader that I want him watched. He is not to act alone.** He had seen that look, that posture in his father before. And it never bode well. **Have Vaile come here. I want her with this woman.**
Aluneth quietly agreed. Liranth’s rider could be trusted.
Tirenth’s rider could not.
