Sybana

The sleek, arrow-shaped head of the senior queen of Dragonsfall Weyr
swayed first to the left and then to the right as she scanned the
cliffs, looking for a certain craggy hide. Her long, slender body was
draped near the Star Stones along the top cliff of the Weyr. While
Chioneth would never be in contention for the largest gold on Pern,
she was certainly long.

Snow was falling in a soft blanket across the triple cliffs, and the
Summer Lake was frozen. She could make out the small figures of humans
skating on the frozen lake. Humans did weird things.

Her head suddenly stopped in the midst of its swivel as her whirling
eyes locked onto the blocky form she had been looking for - Galgaith.

}:Galgaith, my dear. Why don't you come and join me?:{ Chioneth invited.

The broad, blunt head of her daughter came swinging up at the summons.

The young gold had been romping in the snow with the greens of her
clutch, a lumbering force of joy among her more agile sisters. Their
lifemates were busy in lessons again. Whatever they were learning was
making Sybana’s thoughts tense and complicated. Galgaith didn’t like
it, but every time she tried to push in, Sybana hushed her and pulled
away. So Galgaith was distracting herself with play-- until Chioneth
distracted her from that.

Her playmates instantly forgotten, Galgaith sprang into the air and
landed moments later beside Chioneth with a semi-controlled thud that
dislodged a fringe of snow and sent it scattering across the weyrs
below. It was not a graceful landing, nor a graceful flight, but it
had done the job and Galgaith threw out her chest, mantling her wings
proudly. }:Mother!:{ That was one of Sybana’s words. Chioneth was her
mother. Mother’s were important, precious, rare. }:Did you see how
well I flew?:{

Chioneth daintily shook her head, dislodging some of the flecks of
snow that had wafted over her arrow-shaped head during Galgaith's
landing.

}:I saw. You looked strong and brilliant.:{ The senior queen's voice
oozed with praise, which was rare indeed. }:What is your training
today?:{

Galgaith basked blissfully in the praise and snuggled down beside
Chioneth. It took her a moment to answer the question. Sybana’s mind
was tangled and sharp, a knot of new lessons and things Galgaith
wasn’t supposed to interrupt. She pushed, gently, stubbornly, until
Sybana reluctantly let a few slippery thoughts through.

}:There is a lesson, and then we fly together,:{ she reported slowly,
piecing the thoughts together. }:The lesson is… about me and my
sisters? About when we fly to pick a mate.:{

The young gold huffed, her breath a little puff of steam in the crisp
air. }:But I don’t want to fly with any of the males. They would get
in my way and foul my wings.:{

}:Males _can_ be bothersome.:{ Chioneth agreed. }:But they serve their
purpose. You only want the strongest and most clever to catch
you when you fly. A strong and clever sire produces strong dragonets,
like Aluneth did with you and your clutchmates.:{

Galgaith shook her head. }:I don't want anyone to catch me when I
fly.:{ she said stubbornly, as only a gold who'd not yet felt the lust
of her first rising can. }:And how can I know who is strong and
clever? They will all say they are.:{

}:That is why _you_ must lead them on a difficult chase so that _only_
the best can catch you.:{ Chioneth explained. A dragon entering the
Weyr bugled a greeting to the queen, who returned it with a warble and
a flick of her tail.

Galgaith gave a little warble too, eager to mimic her mother.

}:I will be very difficult,:{ she promised. }:I will fly so fast and
far, you will be very proud of me.:{

}:I have no doubt of it,:{ Chioneth said with confidence and pride.
}:You are the picture of strength and power.:{

}:I will be just like you,:{ said Galgaith, eyes whirling adoringly up
at Chioneth. Reassured and content, the young gold relaxed back beside
her sleek mother as the snow fell around them.
