Teigan

Teigan

Becoming Weyrwoman wasn't so much stepping up as shouldering a weight. Aydhan, D'hol, the Wingleaders, and the Headwoman Jayzine had kept the Weyr running in Kapera's absence, and Thiseta felt like she was trying to do what an army had once accomplished-- and failing.

Throughout the day there was a constant barrage of sidelong glances, hesitations before replying, and darted glances at Aydhan for reassurance as Thiseta ran through aerial drills with Willow Wing and later, sat with a pile of hidework before her to go over lists of the arriving tithes, Search schedules and the distribution of tokens, and a barrage of site plans and electrical schematics that she couldn't make heads nor tails of but the Crafters needed her stamp of approval to initiate. It was a wave of expectations that Thiseta had been sure she could surf, but now she felt like she was drowning.

It was late before she crawled into bed beside her weyrmate, grateful for his warmth. Even though they'd spent the last of the day's candlemarks together she craved his body wrapped around hers like a bulwark against the rest of the Weyr. Thiseta put her head on his shoulder and stared into the dark. The wind was picking up outside and she could hear it soughing against the cliffside. "Teigan?"

There was a healthy pause before her weyrmate's sleep-roughened voice croaked, "Thiseta?"

He was half asleep. This probably wasn't the best time to brooch what might be a thorny conversation. The smart thing to do would be to say 'goodnight', but when she opened her mouth she said instead, "How come you never told me that your parents were at Dragonsfall Weyr?"

Teigan's brain was a wild scramble of thoughts as he tried to piece together the steps that had led Thiseta to this question. "Uh," he cleared his throat to clear the scratchiness away. One of his much larger hands covered her own where it rested on his chest. "I guess it didn't occur to me. I haven't visited them myself in Turns."

"You never really talk about them," she said, nestling a little closer against his side.

A deep exhale came from the space in the darkness beside Thiseta. "Yeah, I guess I don't." The last dregs of warm sleep were fleeing the recesses of his mind, leaving him a bit more lucid. "It's not like there's a rift between us or anything."

"But?" she prompted.

"There's not a but, really," he insisted. "I moved away from the Weyr, took up Hold life, married, and raised a son. Without the ease of dragon transport it wasn't as if I could dash home whenever I wanted. The Pass started, my family was busy, and I concentrated on my craft."

"I'm glad that you decided to transfer to Windswept Islands instead of Dragonsfall," Thiseta said quietly. "If you had, we'd never have met."

"I like to think we would have found each other, someway, somehow, regardless of where we were." Teigan rumbled back.

She smiled. Teigan made her feel special in a way that others never did. "I really should go to Dragonsfall Weyr to visit Saibra... if I go, do you want to come with me?"

"As long as I won't be getting in your way," he said. He knew that without a dragon people like Weyrwomen and Weyrleaders barely even glanced in his direction. Until they were lying injured in the infirmary, anyway.

"Of course you wouldn't be in my way. You can come with me to meet with Saibra if you want. And... maybe I could visit your parents with you?"

His parents. They would be happy to see him and they would be jubilant to meet Thiseta, he was sure. "I'll send word to let them know that we'll be visiting."

**Mission accomplished.** Thiseta snuggled into his side to hide her smug smile. "I'll write to Saibra in the morning and let you know what she says."

"You know," her weyrmate's voice was husky, "now that we're both awake." One of his hands slid over her hip.

She laughed softly. She'd gotten what she wanted, so it was only fair that Teigan got something as well.
