"This is it?" Saibra asked, flipping through K'yne's notes on all of
the meetings he'd attended as a part of the Weyrlingstaff. When she
had assigned him months ago to spy on T'lonas and M'thos she had
honestly expected more.

"That's it," he confirmed. "They're good Weyrlingmasters, Saibra.
Leave them alone. Let them do their jobs."

She arched an eyebrow. There was something different about K'yne
today, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it.

"T'lonas is solid and even-tempered. He deals with even the most
difficult cases, like Adamanth and Z'renh, with ease. M'thos is like
the group's second mother, supporting them emotionally, encouraging
them when they need it. They certainly don't need me there looking
over their shoulders. They have much more experience dealing with
young riders than I do."

"I would still like you to stay as the Weyrlingmaster's Third," she said.

"After this Weyrling class graduates, I am done. No more being your
Weyrlingmaster Third spy. And no, I don't want to go back to the
fighting Wings as a Wingsecond again, either. I'll be a wingrider
wherever the Weyrleader thinks I should go, but I'm done. I want my
free time to be spent raising my son." His blue eyes were rock hard.

Saibra felt a faint twinge of guilt, knowing she had been the cause of
his limited time with his young son.

"J'ackt's childhood and raising were ripped away from me. I will not
let that be the case with Keriv. He will not lack a father's affection
and attention." K'yne reclaimed his notebook from Saibra and shoved it
back in the front pocket of his tunic. "I have loved you for nearly my
entire life. I have done anything you have ever asked of me, even
though you cannot return the same kind of love. I have put you first,
above everyone. But not anymore. Keriv has to be, and is, the most
important person in my life."

The words hurt her more than she had thought they would, but they were
true, and he was right. She would never be able to love him the way he
wanted.

"Of course," she murmured. "I'll let I'serin know you would like to be
moved into a Wing once they've graduated." She took in a deep breath.
"You know, there have been times that I have wished I could love you
the way you wanted. The way you deserve." She swallowed past the
dryness in her throat. "I've been unfair to you, often. Used you many
times." Her fingers found an uneven spot in the wood finish of her
desk. She ran her fingernail over the groove. "I know you missed
J'ackt's life," and what a wreck he had turned out because of it, "but
you were there for my Saidrene and Ki'ben. You're more than their
uncle, you're a second father to them, you know."

K'yne's voice was gruff with emotion as he gave a sharp nod. "I know."
He loved Saidrene and Ki'ben as if they were his own. He had taken
them under his wing when his brother had died and would always be
there for them.

The Weyrwoman blinked back tears. Ugh, she hated showing emotion. At
least, _this_ kind of emotion. "I am glad you have Keriv. He is lucky
to have a father like you." She would not say that she wished he would
find someone to love him as he deserved because she didn't know if he
even wanted that anymore.

"Thank you, Saibra." The words were clipped, a sign he was trying to
keep a tight rein on his emotions.

"Is there anything else?" Her voice sounded funny in her own ears.

K'yne shook his head.

"Then you're dismissed."

When the door closed, when she was alone again, Saibra allowed herself
to cry. Letting go of K'yne was finally letting go of K'fel.
