Sybana

Sybana

"There you are!" Sanvi hurried forward when she saw Sybana and linked her arm through the gold weyrling's before Sybana could escape. She'd hurried her own bath so that she could lurk in waiting for Sybana, and the fingers she wrapped around the other weyrling's arm were chilled. "I thought you'd be in the baths forever. Have you finished that novel I leant you yet?"

Sybana had barely taken two steps into the hallway before Sanvi appeared at her side like a darting firelizard, linking their arms before she could so much as blink. Her skin was still warm from the baths and the contrast of Sanvi’s cool fingers made her shiver.

"Oh, Sanvi! You startled me." Sybana hadn't noticed Sanvi lying in wait. Ressa, her guard of the moment, had. But Sanvi was a classmate, not an unknown holdless to be deterred, so the guard had done nothing.

At the question, Sybana's expression changed, a hint of a flush warming her cheeks. She lowered her voice to an excited hush, "I did finish it, a couple days ago actually. It was... amazing. I've never read anything like it. The tension at the first dinner party... The little mentions like the way his coat brushed her hand on their walk... I was on the edge of my seat. I can't believe you called it 'garbage'!"

Sanvi blinked. "Well... ah. Glad you liked it!" At least someone did. Sanvi turned to look over her shoulder at the guard trailing them, then back at Sybana. "Shells, how do you stand being followed like that all the time? Ditch her and come to my weyr. I'll get Halia to come over too and we can make an evening of it."

"Really?" Sybana blinked, caught off guard by the invitation. An evening with Sanvi and Halia-- and her? That was a first. Honestly, she quietly admired the weyrgirls of the class. They always seemed so bold and sure. If they finally wanted to include her, well...

"Alright," she whispered. "They can't follow me when I fly. I'll come to your ledge with Galgaith." She didn't feel much guilt at the prospect of ditching her guard. It wasn't like there were going to be any Holdless in Sanvi's weyr. "...Should I bring anything? I think I have some wine."

"Absolutely bring wine." Sybana probably got the good stuff from the kitchens, and it would be hilarious to watch Galgaith try to land on Respelleth's tiny ledge. It was barely large enough for Arimith and Respelleth to curl up together, and Galgaith was _huge_-- and still growing. She winked and slipped her arm from Sybana's. "See you soon!"

Halia had been quick to nip over when Sanvi sent word, so she was already there when the commotion began out on the ledge. Galgaith had tried to come in for a landing, only to find her green sisters already occupying most of the space. Arimith and Respellath began to excitedly offer suggestions and encouragement, without significantly moving themselves, so there was a lot of mental chatter and several more scrabbling passes before the hulking gold managed to wedge her upper half on the ledge enough for Sybana to dismount.

It was anything but graceful. Galgaith was squeezed in over her sisters, so Sybana--ducked low over the gold's neck-- was practically against the ceiling and had to climb clumsily down using straps and gold and green handholds. "Oh, oops-- sorry. Thank you."

Sanvi shook her head from the safety of the door to her tiny weyr. "I honestly wasn't sure if she was going to make it."

**Of course she did! Galgaith can do anything!** Respelleth said brightly.

Her rider refrained from rolling her eyes. Her dragon was absolutely besotted with her gigantic gold clutchmate. Instead she gestured for Sybana to come in. "Welcome to an evening without your safety shadow. I promise you won't find any Holdless hiding under my bed."

"That sounds wonderful," said Sybana, stepping into the weyr. It was smaller than she'd expected. "You're weyr is lovely-- hello, Halia."

"Hello, Goldie," grinned Halia as she breezed over and plucked the wine bottle from Sybana's hands. "What's this? A Benden red? Sheesh, they really do give you the good stuff!"

"It was a weyrwarming gift," Sybana hurried to explain. "The kitchens usually send a southern wine--"

"Oh, relax," Halia laughed, already digging in Sanvi's cabinets for some cups. "I'm not angry. I'm glad you're sharing it."

"A Bendan red." Sanvi sighed. "Open it and let it breathe for a bit. I can wait. A Bendan... I managed to get a glass once at a Hatching a few Turns back. The bartender had been drinking and I was in line after a ranker, and he got halfways through pouring me a glass before he realized he should have given me the Weyr's wine. Thanks for sharing it with us."

Sybana unwound her scarf and ran a hand through her dark hair, her smile a touch shy. "Of course. These things are best when shared... with friends." She did want to be friends.

"Oh, I brought back your book too, Sanvi," she added before the other girls could say anything to the contrary. She produced it from her satchel, holding it out like the secondary peace offering it was. "Thank you for the loan. I'd never read anything quite like it."

"Keep it." She'd found it abandoned in the Dining Caverns, and like many Weyr residents didn't really see the point of owning books. Then Sanvi smiled. "Actually, Halia and I found another book that's a bit... kinkier than that one. Thought you might like to borrow it too, or we could read it out to each other tonight?"

"Is this the 'toe-curling' you promised me before?" asked Sybana, intrigued, despite herself. "I... wouldn't mind taking a look."

"Excellent," Halia said, sharing a grin with Sanvi.

"All right. Let's read the first bit while the wine breathes." Sanvi settled into a slightly lopsided chair with well-worn upholdered arms and tucked her legs beneath her. She cleared her throat. "The Weyrwoman's Choice, by... someone. For some reason they didn't want to have their name attached to it," she said, waggling her eyebrows at the two other girls over the book's cover.

"Weywoman Vaibra lay exhausted in her lover Z'ehn's muscular arms, the air in their weyr thick with the rich and musky scent of their passionate lovemaking. She was satisfied but not sated, and the restless snarls of the howling winter winds outside made her long for something more. Something forbidden. Her mind drifted to the Wing meeting earlier that day where she'd had to sit still and listen as the men talked about Thread and fire and death. Her fingers strayed down the planes of her taut, lithe and supple body of their own accord as she watched herself in the giant silver mirror next to her bed. Facing danger each and every day meant that the erotic, sensual moments between Threadfall weren't to be wasted, even if Z'ehn lacked the stamina to keep up with her. No man could... could they? Wow, they really just dive in." Sanvi snorted.

"Weyrwoman Vaibra? Z'ehn?" Sybana squeaked, redfaced. "It's not--"

"It is," Halia confirmed with a devious smile.

Scandalized, Sybana looked back and forth between the greenriders. "We should _not_ be reading this. Is-- is it even legal?"

Halia, who had lost patience and poured three generous cups of wine, merely chuckled and handed one to Sybana. “Don’t be such a prude,” she said, flopping down next to Sanvi and taking the book. “You know next to nothing thanks to your stupid holder education. This is important research for you, so listen up!"

Beginning where Sanvi left off, Halia launched into her own dramatic reading of Vaibra's adventures as Sybana sank down in her chair, mortified.

But she didn't leave.
