K'mai

K'mai

Tsaera descended to the Infirmary the morning after the previous day's disastrous Threadfall to make her own rounds. After Threadfall had ended and the Wings were called back to the Weyr, she'd been busy checking in with her own Wing and soot-streaked dragon, and the Infirmary too chaotic for another unneeded body to be in the way.

She stopped at the end of a particular bed and cleared her throat to announce her presence, since the little room's walls were just curtains. "K'mai? How are you feeling?"

"Weyrwoman!" He started to sit up and winced. "What a pleasant surprise. My head is still pretty sore, but I'll be fine."

"I'm sure. Dragons aren't light," she said dryly. The goldrider noticed K'mai's wince and pulled the curtain closed after herself to cut out some of the light. "I hear you have a concussion and a 'Scored arm."

"Yes, ma'am. My head hurts more, but that should be better in a few days. My arm will keep me grounded for at least a few sevendays, until I can catch firestone sacks again."

Tsaera pulled up the chair next to the bed and sat. K'mai was battered and bandaged, but to her eyes looked surprisingly good for being Threadscored and catching a falling dragon. He was awake, talking and clearly alert. It was a relief. "I'm sure. Is this your first time getting 'Scored?"

"No. We've had a few minor ones. And we got hit bad early in the Pass." The scar on his back twinged at the memory. "This is . . . maybe the second worst injury I've had in Fall, and the concussion is the worst of it. I was knocked out for a while and Sebeth . . . he got us back to the Weyr all by himself."

"Clever dragon." Not every dragon kept his head enough to go /between/ without his rider's support. Sebeth went up in Tsaera's estimation, although she'd always been partial to him. His hide was very similar in colour to the dragon that had Searched her so many Turns ago. "I hear that he managed to avoid getting 'Scored, at least. Although Tabanirth tells me that he's very sore."

"Trasiboth fell on us. That's how I got knocked out. The dragonhealers said his bruising is minor and he should be fine in a few days," K'mai said. "Oh, hey, can I ask you a favor?"

"What's the favour?" Tsaera asked.

"Could Tabanirth sleep with Sebeth tonight? If he needs someone?" K'mai didn't think Aluneth would be willing to curl up with the blue two nights in a row. "The healer said I might have to stay another night."

**Would you mind?** Tsaera asked Tabanirth.

The gold dragon's reply was swift. }:There is room on my ledge for Sebeth. He will seek me out when the sun goes down.:{

Tsaera smiled. "Tabanirth said that Sebeth can come find her when the sun sets. He's not the first dragon to need someone to curl up with while their rider is in recovery, and she'll enjoy having the extra warmth."

"Thank you," K'mai's smile was warm, but after a moment it faded. "And maybe . . . check on I'serin? I know he's taking this hard."

It had been a particularly difficult Threadfall. Tsaera nodded. "Of course. Has he been by?"

"He came to check on me yesterday." K'mai looked down at the bed as mixed emotions filled him. Sorrow at I'serin's pain and guilt, happiness that I'serin had apologized, protectiveness because he knew people were judging the Weyrleader, sadness for those who'd been hurt and killed.

"I'll check on him." It had been in the back of her mind to do anyway. "And while I do that, you need to concentrate on healing up. There's more than a few people who would love to see you back in your own weyr. Speaking of, do you need anything fetched from your weyr? I can send a Candidate or Weyrling for you, if you want."

"Thank you, weyrwoman." K'mai felt better knowing at least one person was going to talk to I'serin to see how he was instead of blaming him for what happened. "I don't need anything. I should be out of here either tonight or tomorrow."

"Let me know if that changes. Otherwise, rest well K'mai. We'll look forward to your quick recovery." The goldrider pulled the curtain closed behind herself and left K'mai to his own thoughts.
