Q'vettan appeared in the Weyrlingmasters offices without any warning, wrapping on the doorframe to J'nic's office to announce his arrival instead. "Do you have a moment, J'nic?" He asked.
“Weyrleader,” J’nic said with surprise. “Of course. Come in, grab a drink if you want.” He had a half-finished mug of tea at his desk.
"Thank you, but that's all right. I won't stay long." Q'vettan took a seat across from the greenrider, more casual than his rank would typically allow. He folded his hands loosely in his lap, eyes steady on J’nic. “I'm sure you know by now that K'lvin will be leaving the Weyrlingstaff soon. I'd rather promote from within than find someone new, and you've more than proven yourself with Riyanth's last clutch. The Weyrlingmaster rank is yours if you'd like it."
“Well, that’s straight to the point,” J’nic said, voice calm but mind racing. He had assumed he’d serve as acting Weyrlingmaster until a bronze or brownrider officially took the position. It hadn’t seriously crossed his mind that he was a contender. “You don’t have any concerns with me being a greenrider?”
"I did at first." Q'vettan admitted, "But N'vanik promoted that bluerider to Weyrlingmaster at Dolphin Cove, and he's managed it just fine for a few turns now. And what do we _need_ bronze or brownrider for that a green or blue can't? Greenriders are the bulk of our fighting force, and the majority of our weyrlings; it'll do good to have adult greenriders as their mentors right from hatching. Other Weyrs miss that perspective. Get a bronze or brownrider in the 'Third position if you feel you need one, but I'd like to see how you and Viseya handle the next few rounds of Weyrlings."
He leaned back in the chair, looking thoughtful. "Do you remember any women Weyrlingstaff? We certainly didn't have them at Dragonsfall when I was knee-high to a green, nor at Igen, and that's partially my mistake. Viseya's the only one I know about."
J’nic couldn’t help but be moved by Q'vettan’s words. He remembered his conversation with R’lor soon after becoming Weyrlingmaster Third. He had immediately liked the bluerider, and he thought frequently of R’lor’s advice to always remember why he had chosen the role and lean into his strengths. Maybe he should pay Dolphin Cove Weyr a visit soon.
J’nic shook his head at the question. “It has been wonderful for the young women, especially the hold and hallbred ones, to have Viseya on staff,” he agreed. It was already hard to imagine what it had been like without her.
“I’ll admit, you make a very persuasive argument,” the greenrider added. “But, I’d like to think things through… talk to K’lvin, and my weyrmate. Can I have a few days to decide?”
"Of course you can. I'd prefer to have someone in the role before the next clutch is on the Sands, but there's plenty of time for that. And if you decide not to, I'd be interested to know who you think could do better."
“I can do that,” J’nic said with a nod. Thanks, Weyrleader.”
Once he was alone again, J’nic stared sightlessly at the hidework in front of him, mind reeling. **I need to go for a long walk.** He had a lot to think about.
