J'nic

J'nic

After the conversation with the new Weyrleader, J'nic went for a walk to the crafter village and back, letting his thoughts go wherever they wanted. He also approached the hydro plant, tempted to interrupt his weyrmate's work, but decided to wait until Sellek was done working for the day. Instead, he went to the person who knew exactly what role he would be stepping into if he accepted the promotion to Weyrlingmaster.

K'lvin's office door was open and J'nic paused in the doorway for a moment, watching the bronzerider pack and feeling a wave of sadness. It would be hard to no longer be able to work closely with his friend.

"Hey," J'nic said softly. "Up for some wine as you pack?" He held up the bottle of wine and two glasses he had brought from his office.

The bronzerider turned. "With you? Of course." Many of the lesson plans he had used were already filed away and ready for use, should J'nic and Viseya decide they wanted to use them.

J'nic poured a generous amount of wine for each of them. "Can I help with anything?"

"No. In truth, I'm not taking much. Just a few knick-knacks from the shelves. My favorite paperweight," he picked up a hefty piece of glass that had shapes inside which looked like the cliffs of River Bluff Weyr.

J'nic nodded. "It will be strange not seeing you every day," he admitted. "The three of us made a good team."

K'lvin's mind flashed to the lovely Viseya. "Yes, we did. I'm sure you will continue on perfectly well without me. Although, should you ever want out, I could make room for a Wingthird." He grinned.

"That would be a change." J'nic paused for a few moments, imagining it. The thought of being back in a fighting wing was strange, but not completely unwelcome. "Speaking of changes, the new Weyrleader came by my office earlier and offered the Weyrlingmaster position to me. I know he has been making a number of changes, but this came as a complete surprise. I told him I needed a few days to think about it."

"I am not surprised at all," K'lvin admitted. "You would be my first choice as well. You've the experience and with your background in mindhealing? I think that gives you the edge over someone else."

It felt good to have an endorsement from someone J'nic considered to be both a friend and mentor. "Q'vettan spoke convincingly about greenriders in leadership roles being a good model for all weyrlings. I haven't had much time to think about it, but I'm realizing I'm not really worried about the color of my dragon. R'lor at Dolphin Cove is a bluerider and seems to be doing fine. It's more the added responsibility on my shoulders."

J'nic paused for a few moments, drinking some wine and collecting his thoughts. "When someone gets hurt... when a pair goes /between/ and doesn't come back ... I already feel that responsibility now as Weyrlingmaster Second, but it must be an even heavier burden as Weyrlingmaster. How do you handle it?"

"You're the mindhealer." The corner of K'lvin's mouth lifted marginally. "I compartmentalize. Everything goes into its own little box up here," he tapped his temple. "I know I have shared with them the knowledge and training that was handed down to us. Once I have shared the knowledge, it's on them. I've done all I can do at that point. It's much like raising children. You train them up and then at some point, you turn loose."

J'nic's smile was sheepish. "It's one thing to give advice and quite another to experience it myself. That's a helpful comparison though. And, it's what I've already been doing. The weight of it would be different though as Weyrlingmaster." He sighed. "I probably will take the promotion. I just want to be sure I'm ready. Speaking of children," he tone became light, "It looks like you'll have a number of our recent graduates in your Wing..."

"Yes, I saw that. Such a rude awakening for them, isn't it? Finally thinking you've gotten out from under your Weyrlingmaster's thumb, only to have him show up as your Wingleader later." K'lvin traced a finger along the rim of his wine glass. "I'm actually nervous about returning to the fighting Wings. It's been nearly four Turns."

This was more comfortable territory for J'nic; advising others rather than sharing his own insecurities. "It will be different, although my guess is leading a Wing has more similarities with leading weyrlings than dragonriders want to believe. How's Xmrenth feeling about the change?"

"He's chomping at the bit," K'lvin admitted. "Always has been. It's been a struggle to deal with his emotions each Threadfall when he's on the ground or in the low Flight with the Weyrlings when he wants to be up there blasting Thread."

"That doesn't surprise me," J'nic said. "Sounds like you can rely on him a lot during Threadfall. It's what we always tell the weyrlings." He sat back, finishing the rest of the wine in his glass. "You know, I think we should go to a tavern for a drink in a few sevendays to talk about how we're both doing." He was realizing it would be nice to go back to just being friends with K'lvin. Working together had been nice, and K'lvin always listened to him, but there had still been a power differential.

“I’d like that,” K’lvin agreed.
