"We'll have to cancel today," Vaile told K'far as she slid from Liranth's bared back. She looked over at her dragon, who was a _vibrant_ shade of green. "I can't risk taking her out of the Weyr like this." They'd have to reschedule their date for another day. Vaile did not look pleased with either situation unfolding.

"Oh." K'far had not noticed, but perhaps he should have. Torth certainly had. His... annoyance? disappointment? overflowed their bond. He had been hoping to have an easy go at catching her someplace where there were no other chasers.

}:I am still going to catch her,:{ said Torth. }:She is worth fighting for.:{

"It's going to be all right." K'far smiled, but he refrained from reaching out to touch her. That was not always the wisest move with a proddy green.

Vaile shot him a look that was a mixture of emotions. "I know it will be -- she's just a monster until she gets it out of her system. And it sets me on edge more than it should." She exhaled softly at looked over at Liranth, who was eyeing Torth with bristling wariness. "I was really looking forward to today," she admitted to K'far.

"I was, too." K'far did his best not to wither under a look that needed to be shot at him. "But we'll make up for it. I promise."

**Torth, buddy, give her some space.**

The brown huffed silently at K'far, but he bowed carefully to Liranth and backed away.

"You... want me to give you some space, too?" K'far offered Vaile. "We can talk after, if you're up for it."

"No," Vaile answered, hugging herself. "No, about the space, I mean. I want her to choose--"

}: I will choose who I _want_! :{ Liranth roared. And with a snap of her wings, she was airborne and streaking towards the clouds, leaving the males scrambling to catch up.

"Hurry," Vaile said to K'far as she gripped his tunic, pulling him towards the flight weyrs.

K'far was certainly not about to argue with her, but part of him almost wondered whether it would be worse to try and fail than it would be to simply...

}:Don't be daft,:{ said Torth to K'far as he launched himself after Liranth. }:I am good enough to win this. I am good enough for her to choose me!:{

**Of course, you are.**

Browns were not merely discount bronzes or bland blues with more endurance. Torth was strong and steady and _reliable_.

He _was_ more agile than a bulky bronze -- he zipped past Soromoyth -- and he _did_ have more staying power than a flashy blue -- he surged beyond Thothitheth.

}:By the skies, you are a marvel, lovely Liranth. Fly high and fast, and I will show you I am worthy to meet you there.:{

}: You won't win her with pretty words, :{ blue Gammanith said as he tried to edge Torth out.

Liranth ignored them all and swooped into a cloud bank, disappearing from sight momentarily until she pierced the belly of it with a sharp dive a few heartbeats later. She was all speed but would not last more than fifteen minutes at that pace.

Kamurath overshot the next turn and dropped out. There was no way he would catch a quick green like her!

Torth hated it when greens did that thing with the clouds! But then she was already back out before he had much time to plot how to respond. He had no words for Gammanith, nor any more unsolicited for Liranth. He _would_ have to show them, after all. Not just tell them.

He only had to be fast for longer than she could. He could do it. And if he was smart about it, he could use his bulk to keep any of the zippiest blues from getting around him. He just had to keep the early lead and not give it up.

Especially not to Gammanith.

Torth's planning paid off. Liranth made a sharp twist to evade an overeager blue, which put her in his path. }: Are you worthy? :{ Liranth taunted him.

}:Let me show you.:{ It was now or never. Torth released the last burst of his reserved energy and interwined himself with Liranth.

On the ground, Vaile let out a relieved cry as she pulled K'far in for kiss.

~*~

Vaile came back to herself with a jolt, clinging to K'far tightly as the last ripples of pleasure faded. "K...far?" she gasped.

"Hey, you." K'far smiled and kissed her. "Are you all right?" As much as he had enjoyed that, he was kicking himself for waiting. He had planned everything. Flower petals. Candles. Sweet-smelling bath salts. The whole nine dragonlengths. It was not to say those things might not still be lovely... but they only got one first time.

She immediately relaxed. "Thank Faranth," she whispered in relief. Then, she laughed. "Sorry, I just...I...I was hoping she'd choose Torth but you know how greens can be and..." Her hand rested on his bicep while she looked at him with a relieved smile. "I've...been drawing this whole thing out, haven't I?"

"You mean 'us'?" K'far was more than pleased to see that Vaile had wanted him to win. "Being with you... It's been worth taking it slow. I care about you. I care about your kids. I never wanted to rush you."

"You're so patient with me," Vaile murmured as she lifted her head to kiss him. "You and Liranth." Her head fell back on the pillow as she closed her eyes. "The kids think you're great," she told him. Not that her son remembered their father at all but Miravaile loved showing K'far all of the little cool things she found that day. She was resilient as only a child could be.

Vaile exhaled softly. "I know you didn't want to rush me. I should have kissed you months before the Hatching. I was just...scared."

K'far thought he understood what she meant. He did not think she was scared of him-- rather, it was that she was afraid that if she let herself get close to someone again, she could lose them, too.

"I can't promise you that I'll never get hurt... or that I'll live forever," said K'far. "But I can promise that we can make each other happy while we're alive. You deserve to be happy."

He took a deep breath.

"I love you."

His words brought a sharp intake of breath, followed by a long epiphanous exhalation. He was right. Vaile had spent the last few Turns shielding her heart out of fear of being hurt again. But that also meant she never felt anything more. K'far had slowly, patiently chiseled away at that shield, reminding her of what M'vel had given her. Of all of the _good_ that M'vel had given her. How she could have that again.

Vaile's fingers tangled into K'far's hair as she pulled him down for another kiss. "I love you too, K'far."
