Teigan

Teigan

"My baby boy, home at last," Kelevina sighed happily as she wrapped her arms around Teigan. Her lips pressed to his cheek.

Hot tears flashed in Teigan's eyes. His mother seemed so much... _smaller_ than he remembered her. Silver had finally touched her hair and her skin had softened with age. An overwhelming surge of guilt for not visiting sooner washed over him.

"Baby boy? I'm forty, Ma." His voice was gruff with emotion.

"And when you're one_hundred_ and forty, I'll still be your mother and you will still be my baby."

"Let the boy go, Kelly. I haven't even gotten to see him yet." T'negan's voice was as deep and booming as Teigan remembered. At eighty-one, the brownrider was still tall and broad, but his hair had gone a shocking white.

His mother slipped to the kitchen for glasses of wine.

"Dad."

The man's arms opened and Teigan stepped into them for a quick hug and a slap on the back.

"Where's that Weyrwoman weyrmate of yours?" T'negan asked.

"Meeting with Saibra and that new gold Weyrling you've got. That dragon of hers was...."

"Terrifying?" T'negan shuddered. "I thanked my lucky stars that Cadervith is beyond his chasing days."

}:I could chase if I wanted to,:{ Cadverith huffed, but the brown's thick and greying neck wasn't fooling anyone.

}:You're not fooling anyone,:{ Maziorth said with a flick of her emerald tail.

--

"Your weyrmate's on her way," Kelevina said as the trio sat, gathered comfortably in the sitting area. Maziorth and Cadervith both vacated the ledge to give the queen room to land.

Teigan walked out to the ledge to meet her.

Imbeth landed in a rush of icy wind and sparkling frost, and Thiseta dismounted quickly. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she caught sight of her weyrmate, but it was only for a moment. The lure of meeting his mysterious parents was too strong. "How has your visit been so far? Hopefully I'm not intruding? I can come back if you want more alone time."

"It's been good, and they're waiting to meet you." Teigan assured her. He'd noticed the momentary look on her face as she first saw him.... Maybe it had been nothing. She seemed fine now. "I apologize in advance if you're hugged several times. They're huggers."

"Fair warning." The Weyrwoman gestured to the door as Imbeth settled onto the ledge with a rumble of greeting to the two elderly dragons already there. "I'll follow your lead."

T'negan and Kelevina were on their feet when Teigan entered with Thiseta.

"Welcome, Weyrwoman," the brownrider said, inclining his white head to her in a polite nod.

Kelevina swooped over. Cupping Thiseta's face between weathered hands. "Oh my, you are _so_ lovely. We are so happy to meet you." And then she pulled the goldrider into a warm hug.

Forewarned, Thiseta hugged her back. "It's lovely to meet you as well, Kelevina. I've been wanting to thank you for raising such an amazing man ever since I met him."

"I told him if he ever goes this long again without coming home that he'll be a dead man next time." Kelevina said this in the sweet tone that only an older loving mother can.

"Yeah, I heard you loud and clear." Teigan shot a little smile at Thiseta, putting his hand to the small of her back.

"Well, come sit and relax. We're not a meeting of goldriders so don't feel the need to etiquette get in the way." This was delivered by T'negan who ushered them to the couch.

Kelevina took her normal winged-back chair. "Tell us a bit about yourself, Thiseta."

"Oof, what is there to tell? My life began when I met Teigan," she said, happy to play the part. She smiled at her weyrmate. "I'm from a logging camp originally and Impressed at Thayan Peak, although I wasn't there when the mountain fell. What about you? Teigan hasn't told me _nearly_ enough."

Teigan's eyes narrowed marginally as he studied Thiseta's face. Something was off. He knew it, but he couldn't ask her about it in front of his parents. He had a feeling they would be 'discussing' something later.

"We're both from here," T'negan said, filling Thiseta in. "Teigan here never was much for the Weyr, despite his other siblings all wanting dragons. Always wanted to craft." This was said with a tinge of pride in the brownrider's voice.

"We were so proud when he went to the Hall to become a Master Healer." Kelevina's eyes were soft. "We didn't expect him to _stay_ there, but we wanted all of our children to do what was best for them. That's all any parent can hope for, of course."

"I feel lucky to have two of your sons at the Weyr. I'm sure that Teigan has already sent K'lvin's regards. He's been promoted to Wingleader at Barrier Lake."

"Yes, K'lvin is a good boy who regularly writes his dear parents," Kelevina said pointedly.

Teigan pursed his lips. "I get it, Ma. I'll write more often."

Kelevina looked at Thiseta. "See that you make him."

"I'll do my best," she said. Teigan looked uncomfortable, and she was enjoying it. "He doesn't tell me much about his time here at Dragonsfall. What was he like back then?"

"Always had his nose in a book," T'negan said.

"That's right," Kelevina's eyes softened with the memories. "He was our quiet, studious little fella. He was never very impressed by dragons the way the rest of our brood was."

"I appreciate dragons," Teigan clarified, "but I never wanted to be a dragonrider."

"Dragonriders need Crafters and drudges more than we want to admit," Thiseta said diplomatically. "And Teigan is such a good Healer. Wasn't it last sevenday that you helped that little girl, do you remember her Teigan? Her foster parents could tell something was wrong but couldn't figure out what."

"Oh, make no mistake about it, Weyrwoman, we couldn't be more proud of our boy," T'negan interjected with gruff pride in his voice.

Teigan winked at Thiseta.

"Mom, why don't you show Thiseta that scarf you knitted for her?"

Kelevina stood and retrieved a beautiful ivory scarf that had been hand-knitted with green vines. "Teigan mentioned you loved plants."

"You made this? For _me_?" Thiseta ran the scarf through her fingers, admiring the neat colourwork and tiny, even stitches. "This is so lovely. Thank you. I love it!"

"Of course dear, you're one of the family now," Kelevina smiled as Teigan put his arm around Thiseta's shoulders and hugged her to his side. Maybe he had been wrong to keep away from Dragonsfall for so many years. Maybe he had kept away because he hadn't had anything beyond his son worth sharing at the time. Things would be different now.
