It had taken longer than a sevenday for V'rin to get in touch with his
trader contact, who had been farther south than expected, and track
down a final bottle. However, he finally had four bottles he was
excited to share with the Weyrleader.
}:Mine has some hot sauces for Yours. Is now a good time for him to
bring them over?:{ Gorith asked Aluneth.
}: As good as any, :{ Aluneth answered after conferring with I'serin.
"Have you tried any of the spicy sauces that originate in other
Holds?" I'serin asked of Saibra as he waited for V'rin to come
forward.
"No." Saibra's eyebrow arched. "Is that a thing? Different spicy
sauces?" It sounded like another Lower Caverns contest in the making.
"It is something I have recently experienced as well," I'serin
answered. He motioned to V'rin, who was approaching the table. "Our
recently acquired V'rin brought them to my attention." He gestured
welcomingly at the bluerider.
"Weyrleader, it's good to see you again. And Weyrwoman, it's wonderful
to meet you. I'm V'rin," the bluerider said with a nod and a smile to
each of them. He ignored the nerves he felt speaking to the most
important people in the Weyr. "I've brought four different sauces to
try, although the Weyrleader has already tasted one of them. And some
food from the kitchens to eat them with, if you'd like." He put the
laden tray on the table, taking a seat across from them.
I'serin began arranging crackers in front of himself and Saibra to use
as bland baseline for tasting but indicated with a hand motion that
Saibra should make a selection. He picked the same sauce he had tried
previously for himself first.
"Maybe you could start with the Berry Delight," V'rin suggested to the
Weyrwoman. "It's sweet, with just a little spice. It's the mildest of
the sauces here."
Saibra was having flashbacks of the dragontail taste-testing she'd
done, along with the curiously molded fish dish.
The Weyrwoman looked around. "Is there something here that you
recommend I put the Berry Delight on?" She looked at the array of
meats on the tray.
"The thin-sliced porcine would be good with that one," V'rin said, pointing.
Saibra followed the instructions like one of the Master Smith's
journeymen putting together a new HNO3 tanks, and then popped the
concoction into her mouth. Her face revealed nothing as she chewed.
"Oh, yes, that's quite lovely. I do like the little pop of sweet
followed by the hint of spice."
I'serin, in the meanwhile, had swallowed his taste, coughing softly
with fond, fiery memory. "One would think that I would have learned my
lesson last time but it does add a wonderful kick," he said between
coughs as he pushed it forward for Saibra to try.
This particular hot sauce made Saibra's eyebrows lift with
appreciation. "Oh, now _that_ is tasty," she said, despite the light
sheen of perspiration that showed on her forehead. "I like the heat!"
This was going even better than V'rin had hoped. "I'm glad you like
it," he said with a smile. "My favorite is Bounding Bovie." He pointed
to a light orange sauce. "It also has fruit: pineapple and mango, but
it is a bit spicier than what you just tried. And then there's Pepper
Party. It's made with three different kinds of peppers and is also
moderately spicy." He wondered if he should have stuck with mild
sauces, but the Weyrwoman at least looked like she might be able to
handle some spice.
I'serin went for the light orange one next. As the fruity tastes
melted on his tongue, he hummed appreciatively. "I believe this one
might be my preferred. I am no good with the spicier ones."
"You should tell your contact that the Weyr is interested in his
sauces. I'll let Headwoman Oselle know so she can budget accordingly,"
Saibra told V'rin, certain other dragonriders would appreciate the
added flavors to their meals.
"He'll be delighted," V'rin said. Hot sauces for the entire Weyr and a
trader whose trade route only rarely came to Dragonsfall? His eyes
were bright as he thought of all the marks he could make with this
deal.
"I believe the Headwoman will be pleased to add to her already
delicious menu offerings," I'serin said to Saibra with a small, knowing smile.
