It was storming and the eggs were Hatching. Was that a normal thing? An omen? Hesbia had no clue. She hoped it wasn’t the latter. As she followed the rest of the Candidates towards the Sands, her mind conjured up all of those stupid stories the veteran Candidates had used to scare the little ones: dragons mauling little kids for fun and all that.
“Don’t be stupid,” she muttered to herself sharply. As she entered the cavern, she looked around to see if she could spot her sister in the stands. Why were there so many people here? Was that normal too? Was it always this stiflingly hot? Hesbia tugged on her robe, tried to use it to cool herself off. No luck there.
The big brute of a gold dragon was hovering over the fifteen small eggs. Hesbia had just begun to wonder how she was going to compete for one of those precious few when the first one, a green, hatched, and headed for Kavalas. Relief hit Hesbia. So a Holdless _could_ Impress! She had a chance!
Her elation snapped when she heard the booming voice of a dragon -- was it the queen? No, another dragon, why was it roaring like that -- as another hatchling Impressed. She didn’t recognize this kid.
Then Mesarian Impressed, not his green that he kept going on about, but a brown. Huh. How was that going to work? Browns went to boys who liked girls? Or was that not true? Weyr stuff was confusing. And this event was really, really loud, which only added to her confusion.
Hesbia didn’t know _what_ attracted her attention but she knew she was never going to forget that moment.
The hatchling was sleek, coordinated. Others might be flapping or stumbling about but this one moved with careful precision, head weaving sinuously. Searching. And when that sweeping gaze found her, Hesbia was pinned under such intensity that Thread could have seared her right there and she wouldn’t have been able to move.
}: There you are. :{
Those three words reverberated loudly. In her head. In her body. Booming. And yet, no one spoke. Not that anyone else could hear. Or could they? The distance between them closed as the hatchling snaked her way. Sat in front of her, scrutinizing her with those oversized eyes. Hesbia didn’t remember kneeling but now she was. “M-Me?”
To her surprise, the hatchling nodded back. }: Hesbia. :{ The way her name sounded through that voice… Hesbia could have wrapped it around her like a scarf, soft and warm. It was the only way she wanted to hear her name said from here until forever.
Those oversized eyes shifted from a kaleidoscope of colors to a blue that was a shockingly bright contrast to the dark of his hide. His. Yes, blue dragons were boys, and this hatchling was the color of the twilight sky. The dark blue right before midnight.
But wait, blue dragons were supposed to pick other boys, weren’t they?
That rich chuckle rippled through her mind. }: No. Not me. You are mine, Hesbia. And I, Oriveth, am yours. :{ Again, the way he said her name was a promise, a caress. All of her fear and anger faded away, brushed aside by his voice.
Astonishment in her eyes, Hesbia found her cheering sister in the crowd and shouted loudly, “His name is Oriveth!”
