Overall, the Hatching had been a success. A very interesting success. Of the fifteen hatchlings, half or more had been Impressed by those with a Holdless background. I’serin could only imagine the unique challenges that would be presented to the Weyrlingmasters with this class.
But there was another bit from the Hatching that was not a success. It was a moment of conflict, both in what had happened and in how I’serin felt about what had happened. And it was the reason why he and Saibra were meeting early that morning.
“I’m guessing you heard about K’mai’s behavior at the Hatching Feast?” Saibra said without preamble as she took a seat with her steaming cup of klah.
“I did,” he confirmed. He exhaled slowly. “And I am…not pleased. The holders in question left shortly after. Witnesses state that they were speaking disparagingly about the Weyr’s fluid sexual nature, but what triggered the drink being thrown was a comment about a Weyrleader dancing inappropriately with another man at another Hatching. I can only assume that they were speaking about N’vanik.”
He exhaled slowly again. “It does not make the situation any…easier though,” he admitted quietly. It was apparent from his expression that having to discipline a rider who was also his lover was not something he had given much consideration to. And now he was in that situation.
Saibra’s eyebrow quirked. “How two cotholders from our area would have even heard about anything from half a continent away is a marvel in itself.” She wondered if they subscribed to those Master Unknown pamphlets…. “Still, we should hold ourselves to a higher standard than our visitors. Throwing drinks on people like a toddler will hardly endear them to us.”
“I do not disagree with you at all there,” I’serin agreed. “I…will speak to K’mai. Though, I would like your insight on how to appropriately handle it. I do not want us to be divided nor give reason for anyone to accuse of me being biased.” Regardless of if they knew of I’serin’s romantic involvement with the bluerider or not, most of the Weyr knew that they were friends.
Saibra knew she should be the one to call K’mai into her office for putting a kink in Weyr-Hold relations, but she didn’t want to deal with the tantrum, if she was honest. “People may think you’re biased,” she agreed, “but you or L’val are best suited to diffuse the situation where K’mai is concerned.”
Tossing her hair over her shoulder, Saibra cradled her cup of steaming klah in both hands as she looked at I’serin. “If it was an altercation between K’mai and another dragonrider, how would you handle it as Weyrleader?”
I’serin had considered every possible outcome and punishment already so he easily answered, “Night watch for a sevenday. Depending on the rider and reason, a mediated discussion with their Wingleader or a mindhealer in order to prevent further altercations.”
“Sounds appropriate to me,” Saibra agreed. “Toss in an apology to the holders. I’ll speak with their Lord and let them know their holders need to be on their best behavior if they’re going to attend Weyr events. It’s a privilege to attend a Weyr Hatching, and we’ll remind them of that.”
His relief was palpable in the next exhale, though he rubbed his forehead as though warding off a headache. “Please tell me that I am not the first Weyrleader to have had a…lover cause a conflict like this,” he asked, hoping that Saibra would give him some sort of assurance. But no matter what assurance, he knew that it was another mark against his tenure. How did other Weyrleaders navigate so many difficulties with such ease?
“Well, neither G’nir nor K’reyel had lovers that were particularly spicy, at least, not during my time as their Weyrwoman. I will say, you’re doing much better than U’kaiah, a former Wingleader, since he ran off when Hygalia took an egg-heavy Genith to the North. To me, nothing during the last Turn tops that sort of scandal.” Saibra reached out and squeezed I’serin’s hand. “It’s natural to want to protect the ones we love.”
I’serin exhaled but felt only mild relief that he was not, indeed, the worst Weyrleader to have graced Dragonsfall. He leaned into her last statement. “I…never imagined having someone to protect, much less having to…discipline them for their…good intentions.” It was such a thorny situation, the more he looked at it, but at least he was able to speak with Saibra openly about it.
He squeezed her hand back. “I will speak with him,” he said, steel slowly entering his voice. “We certainly cannot have this happen again.”
