Nosarre

Almost half a month had passed since Galgaith first laid her eggs. The novelty had worn off and the tedium had set in. Visits from L’keri and the other goldriders spiced things up, but it wasn’t long before Sybana was craving the company of people her own age. So finally, one sunny afternoon, she requested a nice tea to be sent up from the kitchens and told Galgaith to summon several of their old weyrling-mates: Sanvi, Halia, Nosarre, Katora. They were basically the closest things she had to friends at the weyr and--because she had an ulterior motive--she kept it to just the greenriders and didn’t ask Zaphare.

The tea arrived just after the guests, complete with little cakes and sandwiches and everything else they might need. The cavern weyr wasn’t exactly meant for hosting, but they made do, clustering around the small dining table on chairs and a trunk.

Halia shared the trunk with Sanvi. She was vaguely aware that out in the cavern Galgaith was showing the eggs to some of the greens--which was almost obnoxiously cute--but her focus was mostly on the gossip around her and teeny tiny sandwiches in front of her. She peeled up a slice of bread to peek inside. Was that… thinly sliced green-gourd? What a weird ass thing to put in a sandwich.

Sybana waited until a lull in the initial small talk before voicing what was really on her mind. “So…” There was no real graceful way to bring it up. “How were your mating flights?”

Sanvi waggled her eyebrows at Sybana. “Not nearly as exciting as _yours_!”

“I’m hoping to make it far less exciting next time…” Sybana said, blushing miserably. “I thought maybe I could learn a thing of two from you all.”

Galgaith was especially showing off her eggs to Kiziolth, again, since the green had crept carefully into the hatching cavern a couple times already. She was in equal parts fascinated by the whole thing and missing her friend, and she had forgotten the entire experience until the next time she hopped back to the cavern.

"I don't have much advice to give you." Nosarre said, "Kiziolth was still biddable enough that I pushed her into Zollarth's path. I don't have to worry about drawing out the flight as long as I can." That plan also wasn't entirely feasible for her, either, since there was only Zollarth and Ishath now, and several older blue and brown dragons that chased as often they could.

“I did the opposite and pushed Respellath to fly as long as she could. Not that it made any difference,” Sanvi said with a sniff. “I still ended up with some old bluerider from Ridge Wing. I was _hoping_ for some hot young stud. I mean, at least the bluerider knew what he was doing.” She wrinkled her nose. “I think? I didn’t stick around afterward to find out.”

“Oh,” said Sybana, who _had_ stuck around. (Mostly because she surprisingly had found it less mortifying than leaving). “What about you, Katora? Halia?”

“I ended up with A’ris, actually,” Halia said, heaping more sweetener into her tea. “The flight itself was fine, Arimith enjoyed herself, and honestly, I did too. Really, he was always so quiet and polite in class, I didn't expect much, but let’s just say… farmer boy knew what he was doing.”

Katora felt as though she was still processing some of what had happened. She wasn’t a stranger to attraction and sex but there had been something…wildly exhilarating about Saoirth’s flight. She wasn’t sure how to articulate it. But Saoirth had been caught by a dragonrider that Katora didn’t know, which had been weird. She stared at the teacup in her hands for a moment, her brow wrinkled with deep thought. “I’m not sure how I felt about not being myself for a bit,” she admitted. “Being Saoirth was…different. And waking up to someone else in bed was not as good as deciding my partner.”

“Yes,” Sybana agreed with a weak laugh. “Being Galgaith was… ...a lot. I’m not sure I like the person I became during the flight. L’keri didn’t complain, but-- but… I bit him.” She blushed furiously and hurried on. “I just wish there was a way to study or-- or _practice_ a goldflight before eggs are on the line.”

Nosarre's expression, which had grown increasingly unnerved as Halia talked, smoothed back to politely neutral as the conversation continued. "You do know you can bite L'keri outside of a goldflight?"

“Oh, I couldn't-- I _wouldn’t_,” Sybana stressed earnestly. “That's what I mean. I wasn't myself.”

"Are you sure?" Nosarre asked. "You've never looked at a man and thought about it?"

“No!” said Sybana, aghast at the very idea.

"Too bad." Nosarre said dryly. "Men love to be bullied. C'uren is practically begging for my attention, and all I've said to him is 'go away'. You could practice pushing him around."

“I don’t _want_ to practice pushing men around and being Galgaith. That’s the easy part. Too easy. I want to practice being _myself_ while a flight is turning my head.” Sybana sighed, frustrated and embarrassed. “I’ve never felt anything like that before and it’s going to be what, a whole year before I feel it again?”

Meanwhile, Katora had the quiet realization that it would be mere sevendays away before Saoirth rose again. The difference felt unfair: Sybana would be waiting and wanting to practice while Katora would be thrown into practicing at least two more times before Sybana got another chance.

“Maybe you just need to sleep with more men,” Sanvi’s smile grew a bit wicked. “That way you’ll know yourself better before Galgaith is all up in your head. I bet at least five or six will have you sorted out. Maybe seven.”

Nosarre's smile slowly widened as Sanvi's did. "That's a good point, Sanvi. Figure out what you want, aside from lying back and thinking of Skyvale. Maybe Galgaith isn't 'taking over' so much as giving you a little nudge."

“I don’t secretly want to bite people,” Sybana insisted, scandalized by their suggestions and their smiles. Ladies didn’t bite. They didn’t scratch like animals. “I don’t need six or seven men to figure that out.”

“Oh, don’t puff up on us now,” laughed Halia. “You said you wished you had a way to study or practice. They’re just agreeing. It won’t be the same as a flight, but it’ll be _something_.”

It was an effort to accept that she--they--had a point. Sybana _had_ asked them to tea hoping for advice, though she had been thinking more of some tactic or technique and not just… more exposure. “You’re right,” she admitted at last. “I’ll… I’ll think about it.”

"Attagirl." Nosarre said. "I bet I can send C'uren right up to your weyr. You just let me know."
